Singapore was just a sleepy city in Southeast Asia more than 50 years ago. But the small dot on the world map has developed into one of the richest nations thanks to its founder and first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew,the father of the state,who passed away on March 23,2015.
Lee grew up inSingaporethat was part of the British Empire. As a law major who graduated from Cambridge University and the founder of the People's Action Party,he becameSingapore's first prime minister in 1959 when British agreed on the island's selfrule.
Lee was a leader with vision (遠見) .He knew that without agriculture and natural resources,Singaporecould only find a way out by developing itself into a place perfect for business. So he began with a few simple ideas:Singaporeneeded respect for elders and the law,hard work,and the idea that the needs of society are greater than the individual's. He united Chinese,Indians and Malaysians,making English a common language. He fought corruption (腐敗) and even disallowed chewing gum. That helped changeSingaporefrom a poor city in the 1950s to a world business center with a per capita GDP of about $55,000,reported by the Financial Times.
Lee left the office of prime minister in 1990 but remained a member of parliament. He resigned as "Minister Mentor" in 2011. He was happy with his work; "I have no regrets. I have spent my life,so much of it,building up this country. There's nothing more that I need to do."
To the world,Lee was one of Asia's most popular politicians. He was one of the first to say China would develop quickly under a former leader Deng Xiaoping and he contributed to China's reform and opening up. "Not a small number of this and past generations of world leaders have asked for his advice on governance and development," said American President bama. "Lee is a visionary and a true giant of history."

Life is full of surprises and you never know how things will turn out.
Sir John Gurdon is a good example of this. As a boy,he was told he was hopeless in science and finished bottom of his class. However,aged 79,the very same Gurdon shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Japanese stem cell (干細胞) researcher Shiny a Yamanaka.
Like so many scientists,Gurdon shows us where the power of curiosity and perseverance (堅持不懈) can lead.
At the age of 15 in 1948,Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys at his high school in Biology and every other science subject. Gurdon's high school science teacher even said that his dream of becoming a scientist was quite ridiculous.
In spite of his teacher's criticism,Gurdon followed his curiosity and kept working hard. He went to the lab earlier and left later than anyone else. He experienced thousands of failures.
"My own belief is that we will,in the end,understand everything about how cells actually work," said Gurdon.'
In 1962,Gurdon took a cell from an adult frog and moved its genetic (基因的) information into an egg cell. The egg cell then grew into a clone (克隆) of the adult frog. This technique later helped to create the sheep Dolly in 1996,the first cloned mammal（哺乳動物) in the world.
In 2006,Gurdon's work was developed by Yamanaka to show that a sample of a person's skin can be used to create stem cells. Using this technique,doctors can repair a patient's heart after a heart attack.
"Luck favors the prepared mind," Gurdon told the Nobel Prize Organization. "Ninety percent of the time things don't work,but when they do,you have to seize (抓住) the chance."
