Travel to China is a lifetime experience and a better way to understand China. Only when you are there, you may start to appreciate and understand what a difference to live in a nation with a population of 1.3 billion.?
China offers variety choices for visitors. If you are interested in Chinese history, Chinese culture and Chinese scenery, your trip will be very fulfilled and very interesting. If you want to enjoy a peaceful sunshine beach holiday, there are plenty of tourist areas along the coastal line, which have unspoiled beaches and luxury hotels for visitors. In Hainan Island, the beautiful Sanya beaches are opened the whole year around and there is no winter in this island. If you want excitements and nightlife, stay in big cities. There are many places every night for international gathering. If you are adventurers, go to remote areas to watch wild life or visit minorities(少數(shù)民族) to see how they live in the hillsides or desert. If you are sporty, take a cycle trip along the countryside, enjoy the rural(田園的) life and meet with Chinese people long the route.?
You may have heard or read a lot about China from books, newspapers, magazines and TV programs. Some of them are true but most of them are out of date, incorrect or even false. China is different from many of your previous experiences and may shock you in many ways. This is what China is!
This country is changing and progressing every day. Yet it is still a developing country. After the economic reform, most of the developments concentrate in major cities and remote areas(邊遠(yuǎn)地區(qū)) are still very backward. China is a very populated nation and people have to cope with the crowded environment. Foreign visitors may not get used to the mentality of the people and sometimes become frustrated with the situation, which they never experienced before. Basically Chinese are reserve, peaceful and nice. They are very polite too but in their own way. When a foreigner is willing to take a more positive attitude to recognize the difference, the trip will become worthwhile or you may ruin your trip completely by unreasonable expectation and misjudgment of the people in general.

Some time people call each other “scared-cat”,but have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream.Although the cat doesn't realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things:It will defend itself,or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, scared,or aroused by other emotions (feelings),our bodied go through many physical changes.Out hearts beat faster, and our muscled get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We,too get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face.If we give way to our feelings and let them take over,we can get into trouble.Have you ever said something in anger—or hit somebody—and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely,or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn't always wise to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it's smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense.Physical illness can develop, and you can feel churned up inside. It can actually be bad for your health.(It isn't good to keep pleasant feelings inside either;all feelings need to be expressed.)
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. It's as if you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you'd smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are you'd see little fruit flies hovering all over them. They'd be rotten.
You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don't exist, but they'll still be around. And at last you'll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.
小題1:The best title for this article is _________.
A.Emotions Affect Our BodiesB.What Happens to a Frightened Cat
C.What Happens to An Excited PersonD.Feelings that People Have
小題2:The underlined words “churned up” in the fourth paragraph mean _________.
A.gradually they'll disappearB.they won't exist any more
C.they will hover all overD.your body stays tense
小題3:The author wrote this article in order to _________.
A.tell us that it isn't good to keep feelings inside
B.give us some advice on how to express our feelings
C.make us face the problem that we have to deal with feelings
D.make us know that it isn't always wise to express our feelings freely

When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger. But forgiveness is possible—and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health. Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive report more energy, better appetite(胃口) and better sleep patterns. “People who forgive show less anger and more hopeful,” says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good. “So it can help save on the wear and tear on our system and allow people to feel more energetic.”
So when someone has hurt you, calm yourself first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Don’t wait for an apology. “Many times the person who hurt you may never be thinking of apologizing,” says Dr. Luskin. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. So if you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting a very long time.” Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who upset you. Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. Instead, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. Finally, try to see things from the other person’s perspective(視角). You may realize that he or she was acting out of ignorance(無知),fear—even love. To gain perspective, you may want to write a letter to yourself from that person’s point of view.
小題1:The text is mainly written to explain ___.
A.how to keep yourself from being hurtB.how to stay mentally healthy
C.how and when to remain calmD.why and how to pardon others
小題2:According to the writer, what is the right way to calm down after being hurt?
A.Try to figure out why you get hurt.
B.Write a letter to the person who hurts you.
C.Persuade yourself to accept what others have done to you.
D.Think about pleasant things and forget about the hurt.
小題3:Dr. Luskin advised us not to wait for an apology after being hurt because___.
A.we are not patient enoughB.we’d feel worse accepting other’s apology
C.people seldom want to apologizeD.people don’t mean it when they apologize

I am so worried about global warming. We need stop cutting down all of the trees so that they can absorb the carbon dioxide. I think the Kyoto Protocol(京都議定書) to stop pollution is a great idea ,and I hope our country will decide to follow it, too.
— Eli S.,10,Texa
People should do all they can to help stop pollution, even if it is something as little as recycling your soda can. Every little thing helps. Maybe schools can put recycling bins in classrooms. Students can bring in all of their cans and bottles and see how many the school can collect.

The United States should take action to help stop pollution. Since we are one of the richest countries, we should at least spend a little money to help.

—Augustine S.,11,Ohio
The world needs to learn more about global warming problems. If we do not do something soon then some of Earth’s coolest animals will become extinct. People should use solar power instead of things that pollute the atmosphere!
— Jillian J.,10,Pennsylvania
Global warming is very dangerous, and it must be prevented. Even if people think that it cannot be stopped ,we should  at least try. Stopping global warming is more important than keeping our businesses going. What about the penguins(企鵝)and the polar bears? We can’t just let them become extinct.

Many people think that the most popular way of communicating with other people is through the mouth. But what they don’t know is that actual communication using the mouth accounts for only around 10% (or even less) of all the means to communicate a message.
Moreover, you can never determine the truthfulness or honesty of people by what they say alone. In fact, words expressed through the mouth often do not reflect what people really think or feel. The more reliable way you can determine their true inner feelings and thoughts is by reading their body language. Everybody communicates using these gestures and if you understand the gestures and their meanings you will be able to read people and know what they are really communicating to you. One researcher even went as far as to say that we speak to hide what’s on our minds. But gestures cannot lie.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you can “see through” the emotions of other people? Let’s say you ask a person whether he can do an important task. He says “OK”. But deep inside, you are questioning yourself, “Is he really willing to do this job?” or “Does he have the confidence in finishing this task?” You can’t question him directly because that would be like belittling him. And even if you ask him those questions, his replies will not tell you what he really feels or thinks. So the most useful way is to observe his body language. Expressions like smiling, frowning, pouting, facial reddening, sweating, toe curling and sideways glances are visible hints that can help you make a right judgment.
1. 小題1:According to the passage, we know _______.
A.words through the mouth are the most common way in communication
B.body language is the quickest way to help people understand each other
C.expressions are the most powerful tool to judge whether a man is confident or not

2. 小題2:What does the underlined sentence mean in the second paragraph?
A.We can express ourselves well by body language.
B.We use words to prevent others knowing our true thoughts
C.Spoken words can fully reflect our true self.
D.We use body language to help express ourselves.
3. 小題3:The underlined word in the third paragraph can be replaced with ______.
A.looking down uponB.speaking highly of
C.laughing atD.believing in

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive (欺騙)? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important in formation that should be included, he can give you a false picture.
For example, some might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for on e hundred dollars!”
This guy’s a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $200 worth of tickets, and only on e was a winner. He’s really a big loser!
He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Some politicians often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents(對(duì)手) says, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” that’s true. However, and honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”
Advertisers(廣告商) will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of deception happens too of often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
小題1:How much did the lottery winner lose?
A.One hundred dollars.B.Two hundred dollars.
C.Three hundred dollars.D.Four hundred dollars.
小題2:We may infer that the author believes people should _______.

C.not take anything at face valueD.not trust the Yucky Company
小題3: What do the underline words “net gain” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.final increaseB.big advantage
C.large shareD.total saving
小題4:What can we know from the example of the Yucky Pill advertisement?
A.False statements are easy to see through.
B.Half-truths are often used to mislead people.
