An old farmer lived on a farm with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early to read his Bhagavat Geeta. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.

One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! I try to read the Bhagavat Geeta just like you but I don't understand it, What good does reading the Bhagavat Geeta do?"

The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, "Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water."

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out (漏出) before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the same took place. He told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water with a basket.

The old man said, " You're just not trying hard enough,"  So the boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. he said, "See Grandpa, it's useless!"

"So you think it is useless?" The old man said, "Look at the basket."

The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket into a clean one inside and outside.

"You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out. That is the work of Krishna in our lives."

“I’ve changed my mind. I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my dad back.” Lucien Lawrence’s letter to Father Christmas, written after his father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched everyone’s heart. Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn’t see the stars in the sky. When those we love depart from us, we cannot see the stars for a while.

But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father there too, either in your mind or heart. I find that my parents, who died years ago, still linger (留連) in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive. I still live to please them and I’m still surprised by their reactions. I remember that when I became a professor, I was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself that I couldn’t wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all my mother said was “I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!” I haven’t forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.

It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care. Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence has been to face the aggressors(入侵者), and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It’s a serious thought, which gives me pause.

I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet “Deliver my soul from the sword and my darling from the power of the dog.” Yet I know death comes to us all, and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live together, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on, I’m sure, in the lives of those we loved, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.

According to the whole text we can see that the first paragraph ___________.

   A. puts forward the subject of the text

   B. shows the author’s pity on the kid

   C. serves as an introduction to the discussion

   D. makes a clear statement of the author’s views

In the second paragraph the author mainly wants to explain to us____________.

   A. how much he misses his parents now

   B. why his parents often appear in his dream

   C. when Lucien will get over all his sadness

   D. how proud he was when he succeeded in life

What feeling did the author’s mother express in her reply?

   A. Proud.            B. Happy.        C. Disappointed.         D. Worried.

In the author’s opinion, the value of a person’s life is _____________.

   A. to leave a precious memory to the people related

   B. to have a high sense of duty to the whole society

   C. to care what others will remember and treasure

   D. to share happiness and sadness with his family

What does the writer mean by the sentence taken from an old poem?

   A. Call on criminals and murderers to lay down their guns.

   B. Advise parents stay with their children safely at home.

   C. Spend every day meaningfully in memory of death.

   D. Try to keep violence and murder far away from society.

They say money doesn’t grow on trees. But it certainly appears to do so on the mysterious coin-studded(嵌滿) trunks dotted around the UK’s woodland. The strange phenomenon of old trees with coins fixed firmly all over their bark has been spotted on trails from the Peak District to the Scottish Highlands. The coins are usually knocked into felled (砍伐的) tree trunks using stones by passers-by, who hope it will bring them good fortune.
These fascinating spectacles often have coins from centuries ago buried deep in their bark and warped by the passage of time. The tradition of making offerings to gods at wishing trees dates back hundreds of years, but this combination of the man-made and the natural is far more rare. It used to be believed that god’s spirits lived in trees, and they were often decorated with sweets and gifts — as is still done today at Christmas. The act is like tossing money into ponds for good luck, or the trend for couples to attach “love padlocks” to bridges and fences to symbolize lasting romance. Some pubs, such as the Punch Bowl in Askham, Cumbria, have old timbers with splits in them into which coins are forced for luck. There are seven felled tree trunks with coins pushed into them in the picturesque village of Portmeirion, in Wales.
Meurig Jones, an estate manager at the tourist destination, told the BBC, “We had no idea why it was being done when we first noticed the tree trunk was being filled with coins. I did some detective work and discovered that trees were sometimes used as ‘wishing trees’. In Britain it dates back to the 1700s — there is one tree somewhere in Scotland which apparently has an old coin stuck into it. ” He said that a sick person could press a coin into a tree and their illness would go away. If someone then takes the coin out though, it’s said they then become ill. We haven’t made it known at all, it’s just happened,” he added. “It’s quite amazing really.” In Scotland, there is also a legend about a kissing tree. If a young man could drive a nail into a tree with one blow, he earned a kiss from his sweetheart.
【小題1】What was the real reason why in UK people knocked coins into the old trees?

A.It was hoped that it would bring them good future and make the trees more beautiful.

D.the appearance of trees would be nicer than their original.
【小題3】The passage mainly tells us that________.
A.some people attached “love padlocks” to bridges and fences to symbolize lasting romance
B.a particular way in which people made good wishes is still popular in the UK
C.visitors tossed money into ponds for good luck just as they knocked coins into the trees
D.a long history of a strange phenomenon of old trees with coins in the UK

請認真閱讀下列短文, 從短文后各題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中, 選出最佳選項, 并在答題紙上將該項涂黑。
A
Sep. 30   I moved into the dormitory today—an ugly building and near a busy main road, too. My room is small but quite pleasant. I must get some posters for the walls, though. I met a few fellow students at supper (The food was awful). They all look much younger than me. They are, of course!
Oct. 07    Lectures began last Monday. So far they haven’t been very interesting (except for the man who gives lectures on drama). Personally, I’d rather go to the library and read, but I have to attend ten lectures a week. Those are the “rules”! Well, at least you meet people there.
Oct. 12    I really don’t like life in the dormitory at all. The food is bad and the students are noisy. They stay up half the night and play games just outside my room. When on earth do they sleep? When do they work? Besides, I don’t like my room. It’s just like living in a box! It looks even smaller now with the posters on the wall.
Oct. 26    I tried to explain some of my problems to my supervisor (導師) today. She listened—but that was about all. “You have to go to lectures, you know, Ann,” she told me. “And the dormitory is cheap and convenient.” “Cheap and convenient”! Well, it isn’t “cheap” if you can’t eat the food and it isn’t “convenient” if you can’t sleep at night!
Oct. 30    I can’t believe it! Three other students—I met them at a lecture and they’re all about my own age —have invited me to share a flat with them. It’s in an old house and it has its own kitchen, so we can cook for ourselves. And my room—right at the top of the house—is fantastic!
Nov. 10   I moved into my new room last Sunday. I feel really happy. Life is going to be much more fun from now on!
56. Ann’s diary is mainly about __________.
A. food                   B. her dormitory life            C. the lectures          D. her fellow student
57. Ann complained (抱怨) about the students because __________.
A. they disturbed her            B. they did not work      C. they did not sleep      D. they looked younger

Professor Reason recently persuaded 35 people to keep a diary of all their absent-minded actions for two weeks. When he came to analyze their embarrassing errors, he was surprised to find that nearly all of them fell into a few groups.
One of the women, for instance, on leaving her house for work one morning threw her pet dog her earrings and tried to fix a dog biscuit on her ear. “The explanation for this is that the brain is like a computer,” explains the professor. “People programme themselves to do certain activities regularly.” It was the woman’s custom every morning to throw her dog two biscuits and then put on her earrings. “But somehow the action got reversed(顛倒)in the programme.” About one in twenty of the incidents the volunteers reported were these “programme assembly failures.”
Twenty percent of all errors were “test failures” — mainly due to not verifying the progress of what the body was doing. A man about to get his car out of the garage passed through the back yard where his garden jacket and boots were kept, put them on — much to his surprise. A woman reported, “I got into the bath with my socks on.”
The commonest problem was information “storage failures”. People forgot the names of people whose faces they knew, went into a room and forgot why they were there, mislaid something, or smoked a cigarette without realizing it.
The research so far suggests that while the central processor of the brain is liberated from second-to-second control of a well-practiced routine, it must repeatedly switch back its attention at important decision points to check that the action goes on as intended. Otherwise the activity may be gotten by another frequently and recently used programme, resulting in embarrassing errors.
【小題1】The purpose of the professor’s research is to __________.

A.show the difference between men and women
B.sort and explain some errors in human actions
C.find the causes which lead to computer failures
D.compare computer functions with brain working
【小題2】Which of the following might be grouped under “programme assembly failures”?
A.A woman went to a shop and forgot what to buy.
B.A man returning home after work left his key in the lock.
C.A lady fell as she was paying attention to each step her feet were taking.
D.An old man, with his shoes on, was trying to put on his socks.
【小題3】The underlined word “verifying” (in paragraph 3) can be replaced by “_______”.
A.improvingB.changingC.checkingD.stopping
【小題4】According to the passage, the information “storage failure” refers to “_______”.
A.information collecting system being destroyed
B.one’s total memory being removed
C.the loss of part of one’s memory for a time
D.the separation of one’s action from words

Some people believe that a Robin Hood is at work, others that a wealthy person simply wants to distribute his or her fortune before dying. But the donator who started sending envelopes with cash to deserving causes, accompanied by an article from the local paper, has made a northern German city believe in fairytales (童話)
The first envelope was sent to a victim support group. It contained ?10,000 with a cutting from the Braunschtveiger Zeitung about how the group supported a woman who was robbed of her handbag; similar plain white anonymous (匿名)envelopes, each containing ?10,000, then arrived at a kindergarten and a church.
The envelopes keep coming, and so far at least ?190,000 has been distributed. Last month, one of them was sent to the newspaper’s own office. It came after a story it published about Tom, a 14-year-old boy who was severely disabled in a swimming accident. The receptionist at the Braunschweiger Zeitung opened an anonymous white envelope to find 20 notes of ?500 inside , with a copy of the article. The name of the family was underlined.
"I was driving when I heard the news,” Claudia Neumann, the boy’s mother, told DerSpiegel magazine. “I had to park on the side of the road; I was speechless. ”
The money will be used to make the entrance to their house wheelchair-accessible .and for a course of treatment that their insurance company refused to pay for.
“For someone to act so selflessly, for this to happen in such a society in which everyone thinks of himself, was astonishing," Mrs. Neumann said. Her family wonder whether the donator is a Robin Hood character, taking from banks to give to the needy.
Henning Noske, the editor of the Braunschweiger Zeitung, said: “Maybe it is an old person who is about to die. We just do not know. ” However, he has told his reporters not to look for the city’s hero, for fear that discovery may stop the donations.
