Some places in the world have strange laws. It’s important for you to know about them before going there.
Whoever likes to chew gum(口香糖) may have to leave Singapore. The government really wants to keep the city clean and will fine you for chewing gum.
Before you leave for the United Arab Emirates you’d better make sure you aren’t visiting during Ramadan(齋月). During that time you aren’t allowed to eat or drink in public. Tourists have been fined up to $275 for drinking in public.
Lovers spend so much time kissing each other goodbye at train stations that trains often start late. This law — no kissing your lover goodbye at train stations – is rather old, and isn’t in use today in France.
In Thailand it’s against the law to drive a car or motorcycle without a shirt on, no matter how hot it is. Punishments are different in different areas and can include warnings and tickets costing about $10. No joke -- the local police will stop you.
Studies in Denmark have shown that cars with their headlights on are more noticeable by other drivers than those with their headlights off. Drivers there are required to leave their headlights on even during the day, or they may face a fine up to $100.
Do you often buy things using coins? Don’t do it in Canada. The Currency Law of 1985 doesn’t allow using only coins to buy things. Even the use of the dollar-coin is limited (受限制的). The shop owner has the right to choose whether to take your coins or not.
Make sure you know about these laws before your next trip. Better safe than sorry.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:福建省南安一中2009-2010學(xué)年高二下學(xué)期期末考試試題英語(yǔ) 題型:閱讀理解

One warm day when I was walking in my backyard, I saw a pinecone(松球) on the ground. I picked it up, and some seeds fell out of it. Those seeds would be a tasty treat for a squirrel (松鼠).
I realized that pinecones were not always open like this one. Sometimes cones were tightly closed. I decided to find out why.
I gathered pinecones from my backyard. I watched them for over a year. Here’s what I learned.
Pinecones open and close slowly as the weather changes. When it’s cold or wet, cones are tightly closed. This protects the seeds inside from rain and snow.
When the weather becomes warm and dry, pinecones open. On a hot day, you might even hear the sound of cones popping open. The seeds inside may then fall to the ground. The wind may blow the seeds to places where they can grow into new pine trees. A seed has a better chance of taking root and growing when the weather is warm.
“Pine seeds are an important source of food for many animals,” says Monty Maldonado. He is a pinecone expert with the United States Forest Service. He says squirrels depend on pinecone seeds for most of their meals. They spend lots of time gathering and storing the cones. Maldonado says some animals eat only the seeds from a pinecone. But red squirrels and gray squirrels will eat the whole thing.
Small animals aren’t the only creatures that eat pine seeds. Maldonado says big grizzly bears (灰熊) and people eat them, too.
Seeds inside a pinecone are important for the growth of new trees and as food for animals. It is the pinecone’s job to protect them. So take note of the pinecones you see on the ground. They hold treasures inside.
45.According to the passage, when it is rainy, cones          .
A.a(chǎn)re open   B.a(chǎn)re usually shut       C.grow quickly    D.stop growing
46.According to Monty Maldonado,        .
A.not all squirrels eat the whole pinecone
B.pine seeds are difficult to find for many animals
C.people in the forest are sometimes attacked by grizzly bears
D.most small animals depend on pinecone seeds for their meals
47.We can learn from the passage that on sunny days         .
A.seeds may fall out of the cones
B.squirrels stay still in their nests
C.it’s difficult for a seed to take root
D.the wind will put the pine trees in danger
48.In the last paragraph, the author points out that         .
A.more and more new trees need to be planted in future
B.people should be responsible for protecting animals
C.people should be careful not to damage the pinecones
D.squirrels now have few seeds to feed themselves
49.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The author learned why pinecones are not always open in the forest.
B.The author gathered pinecones and observed them for a month.
C.The author is fond of gathering and storing the cones.
D.Pine trees are precious to animals and people.

Have you ever heard the story of the four-minute miles? Many years ago, people believed that it was impossible for a human being to run a mile in less than four minutes until Roger Banister proved it wrong in 1954.
What happens if you put an animal in a pond? Any animal, big or small, will swim its way through. What happens when someone, who doesn’t know how to swim, falls in deep water? They drown. If an animal who has not learnt swimming could escape by swimming, why not you? Because you believe you will drown while the animal doesn’t.
Have you ever wondered why the letters are organized in a particular order on your keyboard? You might have thought it is to increase the typing speed. Most people never questioned it. But the fact is that this system was developed to reduce the typing speed at a time when typewriter parts you jam if the operator typed too fast.
These three cases show the power of our beliefs. There is no other more powerful force in human behavior than belief. Your beliefs have the power to create and to destroy. A belief delivers command to your nervous system.
I used a snake in my workshop for children to show them how unrealistic some of their beliefs are. Students of a school in India said snakes are slippery and slimy and poisonous. After doing an exercise for changing beliefs, they took my snake and found it to be dry and clean. They also remembered that only three types of poisonous snakes exist in India.
Did this story end the way you thought? Review your beliefs now and find out which ones you need to change.
60.In the author’s opinion, if a person in deep water doesn’t know how to swim, he will drown because_________.
A.he is afraid of water               B.he believes he will drown
C.he hasn’t learnt to swim before      D.he doesn’t want to live in the world
61.The author thinks that the letters are organized in a particular order on your keyboard in order to _________.
A.save more space                  B.satisfy the operator
C.reduce one’s typing speed           D.increase one’s typing speed
62.The author’s experiment shows that________.
A.snakes are dry and clean            B.snakes can be caught easily
C.snakes are slimy and poisonous      D.snakes in India aren’t poisonous
63.According to the passage, we know that_________
A.students from India have unrealistic beliefs on how to live a better life
B.a(chǎn)n animal who hasn’t learnt how to swim will drown if you put it in pond
C.most people don’t like the order the letters are arranged on the keyboard
D.Roger Banister was the first person who ran a mile in less than four minutes
64. The main idea of this passage should be that________.
A. beliefs are very powerful
B. beliefs make us seem stupid
C. changing your beliefs now is necessary
D. people should always believe in themselves

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2011—2012學(xué)年遼寧省沈陽(yáng)鐵路實(shí)驗(yàn)中學(xué)高二第一次月考英語(yǔ)卷 題型:閱讀理解

Why should I teach my children history? That sounds like a stupid question to even ask. But,as I hear different home schooling teachers discuss history,I get the idea that there may be different reasons for teaching history.Let me briefly explain the three good reasons for studying history and two bad reasons for studying history.
The major reason I see for studying history is that we can learn from the past.I believe that the world would be a much better place if more people understood the successes and failures of the past and the things that made these successes and failures. However,as the unfortunately(不幸地)true statement goes ‘‘the one thing we seem to learn from history is that we don't seem to
learn from history”,perhaps at least in teaching history, to my children I can do a small part in changing this.
A second major reason for studying history is that it is hard to understand the current(目前的)political climate in the absence of an understanding of its historical context(背景).We can not
even understand why we are and where we are without history, much less try to figure out where we are going or how we should get where we want to be.
I teach my children history, for one more reason.I bought a set of historical audio tapes for our children. My seven-year-old son listened to them over and over.It was my hope that he would
become inspired by the accomplishments(成就)of people like the Wright brothers to accomplish things by himself.I think that it is good that we celebrate the accomplishments of people like Martin Luther King Jr. By doing so,young people are called on to stand for the principles that he stood for and accomplish what he didn’t accomplish.I also think that by studying people like Adolph Hitler, people can learn to stand against the things that he stood for.
【小題1】What message can we get from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 ?

A.Many people aren’t clever enough to learn well from the past.
B.Many people fail to make good use of history and make the same mistakes.
C.Many people feel it hard to understand history.
D.Many people have no interest in studying history.
【小題2】In Paragraph 3,the author shows that history is useful because
A.it makes the current political situation go smoothly
B.it helps us realize the importance of historical events
C.it helps us understand why things are the way they are
D.it helps people accept the present situation where they live
【小題3】Some historical figures are mentioned in the last paragraph to show____.
A.people can be inspired to do good and also learn to fight against evil
B.people may also learn from bad historical figures
C.more celebrations should be held to honor their achievements
D.today’s people can also achieve what they achieved
【小題4】What would be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.How to teach history effectively.
B.Some negative reasons for studying history.
C.How to get more people to study history.
D.Some bad historical figures.

The British aren’t having as many children as they used to. One reason is that people are having children much older than before, meaning they have fewer years in which they can have them. After years at university, they need a few years of work experience before they can get the job they want. They might then get married, but it’s incredibly expensive to buy a house in the UK.
The above explains why young British people now don’t move out of their parents’ home until they are around 30 years old on average. It is not until they are 30 that they can afford their own home. Increasingly, it is not until that age that they can afford to get married and start a new life in a new home. It’s only after this age that many young people start thinking about having a child.
So a British person manages to get a job, get a home and get married. Why isn’t he or she then having at least two children on average? The main reason is that it is quite expensive to bring up a child in the UK. Why is it expensive? Well, these days, both parents need to work just to pay for their home and living expenses. Because both parents are at work, that means they then need to pay someone to look after their child during the day. Paying for this childcare is nearly always expensive.
The recent financial crisis is making things even harder for families, since unemployment is rising and even fewer people can afford to have children. With so much pressure on families, is it any surprise that the divorce rate is so high?
So what is Britain doing to try and save the British family? The government is trying to make it cheaper to have children. For example, there have been increases in money families can claim from the state each month. Also, there are increasing government subsidies for nursery schools, so that parents do not need to pay so much for child care.
The government is also trying to reduce the number of hours British parents have to work to earn enough money to pay their bills. If parents didn’t have to work so many hours, they’d have more time to spend with their children and wouldn’t need to spend so much on childcare. On average, a Briton works 49 hours a week, which is the most in Europe. The state is now considering introducing laws to encourage companies to improve their employees’ work-life balance. Let’s hope they’re not too late to save the British family. Otherwise, the British will always be too tired, and won’t have enough time and money, to have children.
【小題1】Young British people live in their parents’ home until around 30 because         .

A.They are allowed to get married at 30
B.they can’t find jobs to support themselves
C.they can’t afford a house of their own until then
D.they enjoy family life with their parents
【小題2】The British are now having fewer children than before for all the following reasons EXCEPT that         .
A.they have fewer years to have children
B.they live much shorter lives than before
C.it is more expensive to bring up a child
D.people are losing their jobs because of the recent financial crisis
【小題3】To make it cheaper to have children, the British government is         .
A.bringing down prices
B.raising the salaries of parents
C.reducing family income tax
D.increasing subsidies for families and nursery schools
【小題4】It can be inferred from the text that         .
A.with long work hours, it is hard for British parents to balance life and work
B.more and more families in Britain are breaking up because they are having fewer children
C.a(chǎn)mong Europeans, British people work hardest and earn the least
D.childcare takes up too much energy and time for the British
【小題5】The underlined word “subsidies” in Paragraph 5 means _________.
A.food paid by the government
B.school buildings for poor students
C.free transportation
D.money from the government to benefit the public
