"USA? Britain? Which country is better to study in?" We often hear such discussions. As China opens its doors, studying abroad has become a dream for many Chinese students. They want to learn about the world.
It's true that studying abroad can help students develop themselves. Language skills will improve and it may be easier to find jobs.
But there are problems that should be considered(考慮). Language is the first. Students must spend a lot of time learning another language and getting used to a different culture.
Students must also learn to live without parents' care and deal with all kinds of things they haven't had to do before, like looking after themselves. There are reports about Chinese students abroad sinking into an ocean of difficulties and giving up easily. When they have to take care of themselves, it is hard for students to study well.
Finally, studying abroad brings a heavy burden(負擔) to the family. For most Chinese parents, the cost of studying abroad is very high. But is it worth it?
We know that there are many famous people who succeed in great things through their hard work in China. Liu Xiang is a good example. Once an American teacher invited him there but he refused. He kept training hard with his Chinese teacher. He surprised the world when he won a gold medal(金牌) at the Athens Olympics. How Do Animals Catch their ZZZ's(打鼾聲)?
Different creatures have developed some pretty creative ways to get their rest and stay safe. The lizard likes to sleep at the far end of small branches hanging out over a pond or lake in the rain forest. If a snake tries to slither up the branch to eat it, it will shake the branch and knock the lizard off, and the lizard will fall safely into the water. Chameleons can change color to match their surroundings in order to hide even while sleeping.
Gorillas like to sleep high in the trees. They build a new bed every night, sometimes taking up to half an hour to pile branches, twigs, and leaves into a comfortable bed. Birds also find it safe to sleep in the trees, but unless they have eggs or young chicks, they don't use a nest. They just lock their feet around a branch and hang on. A special tendon in their legs is automatically tight when they are at rest, so they won't let go and fall.
Dolphins live underwater, but must come to the surface to breathe. Scientists now believe that dolphins may sleep with only half their brain, while the other half stays awake to keep them safe and breathing. Seals also do this, lying on their sides on the surface of the water with one flipper underwater paddling to keep their noses above the surface. Some ducks may also have this ability, and actually sleep with one eye closed and one eye open.
小題1:How does a chameleon protect itself while sleeping?
A.By changing its body colors
B.By hanging out over a pond.
C.By sleeping with half their brain.
D.By making beds with branches.
小題2:Why will not birds fall when they are at rest?
A.They build nests and sleep in them.
B.They fall asleep automatically.
C.They have a loose tendon in their legs.
D.They lock their feet around a branch.
小題3:How do dolphins breathe?
A.They breathe underwater.
B.They come to the surface to breathe.
C.They breathe underwater or come to the surface to breathe.
D.We don't know.
小題4:What does the writer intend to tell us?
A.The cleverest animal is the gorilla because it can make beds.
B.Differences in habitat can lead to different living habits.
C.The ways animals catch their ZZZ's are pretty much the same.
D.In order to protect themselves most animals choose not to sleep

To master a language one must be able to speak and understand the spoken language as well as to read and write.Lenin and his wife translated a long English book into Russian but when they went to England in 1902, English people couldn't understand a word Lenin and his wife said, and Lenin and his wife couldn't understand what was said to them. This shows the importance of spoken language.
Speaking, of course can't go without listening. If you want to pronounce a word correctly, first you must hear it correctly. The sounds of Chinese and English languages are not exactly the same.If you don't listen carefully, you'll find it difficult or even impossible to understand the native speakers.
Well, what about writing﹖ Like speaking, it's to exchange ideas.People usually use shorter words and shorter sentences in their writing.
The important thing is to make your idea clear in your mind and then to write it in a clear lively language.
Chinese students read too slowly. If you read fast, you understand better. If you read too slowly by the time you have reached to the end of a page you have forgotten what the beginning is about. When you meet with new words don't look them up in the dictionary.Guess the meaning to form the context. You may not guess quite correctly the first time but as new words appear again and again in different context their meaning will become clearer and clearer. If you look up every word you'll never finish a book.
Students of a foreign language need a particular knowledge, the knowledge of the life, history and geography of the people whose language they're studying. They should study those subjects in the foreign language not only in translation. In this way one can kill two birds with one stone: learn a foreign language and get some knowledge of the foreign country at the same time.

A.how to guess the meaning of the words
B.how to read fast
C.how to look up new words in the dictionary
D.how to read carefully
小題4:“Kill two birds with one stone” means
A.to get some particular knowledge
B.to get more than what one pays
C.the stone is very useful
D.the birds are blind enough
小題5:In the last paragraph the writer advised us
A.to kill two birds with one stone
B.to learn two languages at the same time
C.to study all the subjects in a foreign language
D.to get some knowledge of the foreign country whose language we are studying

Scientists from South Korea are trying to convert(轉化)sound waves into electricity. The research could lead to charging a cell phone from a conversation or providing energy to the nation’s electricity system generated(產生)by the noise during rash-hour traffic.
“Just as speakers transform electrical signals into sound, the opposite process —turning sound into a source of electrical power — is possible,” said Young Jun Park and Sang-Woo Kim, the joint authors of a new article in the journal Advanced Materials.
Harvesting energy from phone calls and passing cars is based on materials known as piezoelectrics. When bent, piezoelectric materials turn that mechanical energy into electricity. Lots of materials are piezoelectric: cane sugar, quartz (石英)and even dried bone which could create an electrical charge when stressed. For decades, scientists have pumped electricity into piezoelectric materials for use in environmental sensors, speakers and other devices.
Over the past few years, however, scientists have made dramatic advances in getting electricity out of piezoelectric devices. In an experiment, by using sound waves, which at 100 decibels(分貝)were not quite as loud as a rock concert (a normal conversation is about 60-70 decibels), the South Korean scientists produced a mild electrical current of about 50 millivolts(毫伏). The average cell phone requires a few volts to function, several times the power this technology can currently produce.
“But the real question is whether there is enough surrounding noise to act as a power source as for a cell phone,” said McAlpine, a leading scientist. A consumer probably wouldn’t want to attend a rock concert or stand next to a passing train to charge his cell phone. The South Korean scientists agree but they expect to get a higher power output as they continue their work.
小題1:According to the two South Korean scientists, ________.
A.sound waves can travel faster than electricity
B.new materials can send cell phone signals better
C.using cell phones adds to heavy traffic in rush hour
D.electricity and sound can be transformed into each other
小題2:We know from the passage that piezoelectric materials ________.
A.can produce electricity when stressed
B.are good at changing electricity into sound
C.can reduce the noise of passing cars
D.have been widely used in phones and cars
小題3:It can be inferred from the South Korean scientists’ experiment that ________.
A.it is hard to change sound into electricity under current conditions
B.it is impossible to make use of loud sound
C.the technology has a long way to go to have a practical use
D.the technology can power cell phones easily
小題4:What McAlpine doubts about the technology is ________.
A.the noise pollutionB.the sound resource
C.the cost of piezoelectricsD.the safety of devices

Animals Can Sense Natural Disasters
Among the dead in South Asia’ s tsunami(海嘯)were many tourists at Sri Lanka’ s national wildlife park at Yala. But very few of the park’s animals — elephants, buffaloes, monkeys and wild cats — appear to have died. There are theories that animals can sense natural disasters and run away to safety.
First, it’s possible that the animals may have heard the quake before the tsunami hit. The underwater burst produced sound waves known as infrasound(次聲). Humans can’t hear infrasound, but many animals including dogs, elephants, tigers and pigeons can.
A second early warning sign the animals might have sensed is ground vibration(震動). The great quake would have produced vibrational waves known as Rayleigh waves. These vibrations move through the ground like waves moving on the surface of the ocean but faster. They travel at ten times the speed of sound. The Rayleigh waves would have reached Sri Lanka hours before the water hit. Mammals, birds, insects and spiders can sense Rayleigh waves. So the animals at Yala might have felt the Rayleigh waves and then run to higher ground.
But what about humans? While we can’t hear infrasound, we can feel it, although we don’t necessarily know we’re feeling it. We also experience Rayleigh waves by special sensors in our joints(關節), which exist just for that purpose. Sadly, it seems we don’t pay attention to the information when we get it. Maybe we screen it out because there’s so much going on before our eyes and in our ears.
小題1:Why did few animals at Yala die when the tsunamis that caused a huge number of human deaths hit?
A.Because human beings cannot hear the infrasonic sound.
B.Because the animals were staying at a higher place in the park.
C.Because the animals were able to run much faster than human beings.
D.Because the animals might have picked up the danger signals and ran away.
小題2:Which of the statements about “Rayleigh waves” is true?
A.Rayleigh waves can be felt both by animals and human beings.
B.Rayleigh waves, just like infrasonic sound, can only be felt by animals.
C.Rayleigh waves are vibrational waves that usually cause quakes or tsunamis.
D.Rayleigh waves move on the ocean surface at a speed ten times that of sound waves.
小題3:According to the passage, which of the statement is true?
A.We can’t feel the infrasound so we can’t be informed of the danger.
B.We ignore the information of tsunami’s coming even though we can also get it.
C.We were so busy on our minds that we feel neither infrasound nor Rayleigh waves.
D.We can feel Rayleigh waves and infrasound so we can escape the danger like animals.

Next Stop: Planet Mars
Fly me to the moon? That’s not far enough. On September 14, 2011, NASA released designs for a superrocket, the Space Launch System (SLS). This time the final destination will be Mars.
The SLS is a huge, liquid-fuelled rocket. If it is fully developed, it will be the most powerful rocket ever built. Its lift capability will be much bigger than that of the space shuttle of Saturn 5, the rocket that sent the Apollo missions to the moon.
NASA is planning to launch its first unmanned test flight in 2017. It is hoped that the first crew will fly in 2021 and astronauts will make it to a nearby asteroid(小行星) in 2025. NASA hopes to send the rocket and astronauts to Mars from the asteroid by the 2030s, according to the Associated Press (AP).
NASA used liquid rockets to send Apollo, Gemini and Mercury into space, but later changed to solid rockets boosters(助推火箭) because they were cheaper. Tragically, however, a booster flaw(缺陷) caused the space shuttle Challenger to crash in 1986. The new project plans to return to liquid fuel.
According to AP, the rockets will at first be able to carry 77 to 110 tons of payload(凈載重量). Eventually they will be able to carry 143 tons into space, maybe even as many as 165 tons, NASA officials said. By comparison, the Saturn 5 booster could lift 130 tons and the space shuttle just 27 tons.
However, unlike reusable shuttles, these powerful rockets are mostly one use only. New ones have to be built for every launch. This will be very costly.
NASA estimates that it will cost about $3 billion (19 billion yuan) per year, or $18 billion until the first test flight in 2017. NASA hopes to make money by allowing private companies to send astronauts to the International Space Station like giant taxi services, so that the program can be “sustainable”.
“This is perhaps the biggest thing for space exploration in decades,” said Senator Bill Nelson, a former astronaut. “The goal is to fly humans safely beyond low-Earth orbit(軌道) and deep into outer space where we cannot only survive, but one day also live.”
小題1:What is the outstanding feature of the SLS?
A.It’s equipped with an advanced control system.
B.It’s the first unmanned space shuttle in the world.
C.It’s the only vehicle that can fly astronauts to the moon.
D.It can send a lot more goods and passengers into space.
小題2:What is Saturn 5?
A.An aircraft that had a deadly flaw and crashed in 1986.
B.A series of rockets that once sent astronauts to the moon.
C.An unmanned space shuttle that was once famous in the world.
D.A kind of launch vehicle that will be used to carry astronauts to Mars.
小題3:NASA plans to use liquid fuel in the new project because ______ than solid rockets boosters.
A.it is less costly
B.it is much safer
C.it can last longer
D.it is more environmentally friendly
小題4:According to NASA’s schedule, it will take ______ years to fully complete the SLS program.
A.about 6B.about 10
C.less than 14 D.more than 19
小題5:It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A.the SLS program is planning to make reusable rockets
B.the goal of the SLS program is to enable humans to live on the moon
C.the US government may not have provided enough money for the SLS program
D.NASA will use SLS as a space taxi between the Earth and Mars

Some people have very good memory(記憶力) and they can easily remember quite long texts. There are other people who can only remember things when they have said them again and again. The famous English writer Charles Dickens said that he could walk down any long street in London and then tell you the name of every shop he had passed. Many great men of the world have a wonderful memory.
A good memory is greatly helpful in learning a language. Everybody learns his own language by remembering what he hears when he is a small child, and some children, like the boys and girls who live abroad(國外) with their parents, seem to learn two languages almost as easily as one. In school it is not so easy to learn a second language because the students have so little time for it, and they are very busy with other subjects too.
A man’s mind is like a camera, but it takes photos not only of what we see but also of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photo with a camera, Some people have very good memory(記憶力) and they can easily remember quite long texts. In the same way, there is much work to be done before we can keep a picture forever(永遠) in our minds.
