When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we’re hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education.
One cost-cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor’s degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there’s a question: Would the quality of undergraduate(本科生)education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a “three-year degree” model.
I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum(課程) any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits(學分). In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly “throw out” one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist “diluting(稀釋)” the quality of the education they offer.
In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior to a quality three-year education. A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it’s not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns(實習生)in meaningful part-time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University.

Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.
For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded. and the record is available for the student to show to potential employers.  All this imposes(增加)  a constant pressure and stress of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students. the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.
小題1:Normally a student would at least attend __________classes each week.
A.36B.12C.20D.15
小題2:According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed

A.their academic performance will affect their future careers
B.they are heavily involved in student affairs
C.they have to obey university rules
D.they want to run for positions of authority

A.they hate the constant pressure and stress of their study
B.they will then be able to stay longer in the university
C.such positions help them get better jobs
D.such positions are usually well paid
小題5:The student organizations seem to be effective in__________.
A.dealing with the academic affairs of the university

Many people are aware of the beauty of a solar eclipse (日食), but are surprised to learn that lunar eclipses are often just as impressive. While total solar eclipse lasts only for a few minutes and can be seen only in a small area of a few kilometers, total lunar eclipse can last for several hours and can be seen over much of the planet. In fact, the beauty and stability of lunar eclipses make them a favorite of both amateur and professional photographers.
Lunar eclipses generally occur two or three times a year, and are possible only when the Moon is full. When we see the Moon, we are actually seeing sunlight reflected off the surface of the Moon When the Earth is positioned in between the Moon and the Sun, however, the Earth's shadow falls on the Moon, and a lunar eclipse occurs.
The type of lunar eclipse - total, partial, or penumbral (半影) - that occurs depends both on how much of the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow and through which part of the shadow it passes. A penumbral eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth's outer shadow. This type of eclipse is brief and frequently goes unobserved by all but astronomers. By contrast, total and partial eclipses occur when all or part, respectively, of the Moon passes through the umbra(本影) shadow of the Earth. These eclipses are quite easy to see and are widely observed.
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch. Solar radiation that occurs during an eclipse of the Sun can cause a form of burns of one's eyes known as eclipse blindness. In fact, the only way to safely view a solar eclipse is by using specially designed equipment. However, since the Moon's light is reflected sunlight, it is completely safe to watch a lunar eclipse without any special equipment, although a pair of binoculars can certainly help the viewer appreciate the beauty of this phenomenon
小題1:The underlined word "stability " most probably means_______.
A.strengthB.positionC.steadinessD.visibility
小題2:According to the passage, a partial lunar eclipse occurs________.
A.when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth
B.when all of the Moon passes through the Earth's umbra shadow
C.when only a part of the Moon passes through the Earth's outer shadow
D.when only a part of the Moon passes through the Earth's umbra shadow
小題3:The passage implies that penumbral eclipses are________.
A.longer-lasting than most solar eclipses
B.more common than partial or full lunar eclipse
C.the result of the shadow cast by the Moon onto the Earth
D.more difficult to observe than other types of lunar eclipse
小題4:According to the passage, it is safe to watch a lunar eclipse, unlike a solar eclipse, because ________.
A.moonlight is less strong than sunlight
B.a lunar eclipse is briefer than a solar eclipse
C.a lunar eclipse lasts much longer than a solar eclipse
D.special equipment can be employed to view a lunar eclipse

Apologizing is both an Art and a Science. The Art lies in the manner in which the apology is delivered while the Science is the recipe that forms the apology itself. A proper apology should always include several ingredients. Now let’s take a closer look at these ingredients.
Give a detailed account of the offense, and make sure both you and the other person are talking about the same thing. Whether you make it in secret or public doesn’t matter, but your apology should be focused on the particular event.
Next, by acknowledging the hurt or damage done, you are making the recipient (接受者) begin to sense that you understand the situation. It is important to rebuild your relationship because it makes them feel their anger is understandable.
Don’t try to defend yourself by offering any excuses, which is important to let them know that you understand the event and you actions do cause them harm. The apology is all about THEM and how they feel. It doesn’t matter if the actions were intentional or not, the end result is the same and that is what needs to be focused on when learning how to say, “I’m sorry”.
Give a sincere statement of regret such as “I apologize” or “I’m sorry”. Above all, tell them it won’t happen again. After all, there is no value in apologizing for something that you will do again and again.
Finally, asking for forgiveness at the end of the apology gives the power back to the recipient. It tells them, that you have done all that you can do by apologizing and providing whatever form of restitution(補償)you can. The next move is up to them.
By including all these ingredients and applying them to your situation, you will know exactly how to say “I’m sorry” next time you need to.
小題1:The passage mainly tells readers ____.
A.the importance of apologizing
B.the process of apologizing
C.how to apologize effectively
D.how to repair a broken friendship
小題2:How will the recipient react when you admit hurting them?
A.They will be sorry for being angry with you.
B.They will treat you differently right away.
C.They will understand the situation better.
D.They will think their former reaction normal.
小題3:When you make an apology, you should concentrate on ____.
A.finding out better excuses
B.taking responsibility for the event
C.defending yourself from more harm
D.understanding the current situation
小題4:What is the key to any apology?
A.A sincere statement of regret.
B.Giving the recipient more power.
C.A promise that you won’t repeat your wrongdoings.
D.Giving the recipient a detailed account of the event.

Online Communication
In an age when technology moves faster than most can keep up with, a small group of people still remain in the time of old-fashioned letter. Frankly speaking, I was once certain that traditional letters could never be replaced by other means of communication.
But a story about online communication changed my mind.
An old man, who suffered a lot from Parkinson’s disease, was not able to talk clearly and could hardly write his name. Living totally alone, he managed to keep in touch with nearly all the members of his family. How did he achieve this? He clicked out words on his computer keyboard.
I, therefore, managed to get an E-mail box as soon as the opportunity came. My life changed. E-mail, and all online communication, is something truly different. It has capabilities(能力) that few other products can match.
E-mail is convenient. It takes less time with its fast speed and 24-hour connection. The slow postal service is no match. If you wouldn’t want to have a face-to-face talk with your manager, you might talk with him through E-mail even if you are in the same office.
Naming all the good things about online communication is not easy. But wait. E-mail can be inconvenient. It can waste time and energy. Just think what may happen when you take a short vacation and return to find your e-mail box filled with 200 unread messages. You could easily spend half a day clearing junk ads.
Then, online communication will keep us staying at our computer while it connects us to distant strangers. Once we throw ourselves into the machine, we may forget the human touches we once held so dear. I’m sure there is and always will be a place for the old-fashioned letter, phone call, and face-to-face meeting… even in the world of modern communication.
As I listen to the sound of the modem(調制解調器), I was excited at stepping out to the outside world but, at the same time, I sensed a loss of control over something valuable in my personal life.
小題1:What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word “junk” in paragraph6?

小題2:What does the writer think of online communication?
A.It should replace old-fashioned letters completely.
B.It is perfect and always does good to you.
C.It is extremely useful and convenient, but it may be inconvenient or even harmful.
D.It does more harm than good.
小題3:What caused the writer to become interested in E-mail and online communication?
A.The sound of the modem.B.His own illness.
C.The changing of his life.D.A sick old man’s experience.
小題4:According to the writer, traditional means of communication will never disappear because ________.
A.they are convenient and popular though they are slow
B.they help to keep the friendly relationship between people
C.most people cannot keep up with the development of technology
D.modern means of communication does too much harm
小題5:How did the sick old man keep in touch with his family members?
A.With the help of his computer.B.By writing letters with his pen.
C.By making telephone calls.D.By visiting them regularly.

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak; and when you start using them again, they will slowly become strong again.       knows this, but nobody would think of     the fact.
Yet there are many people who        to know that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that       has a good memory, he       means that he keeps his memory in practice     exercising it very     , either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is     , he means that he does not give it enough      to become strong. The position is exactly the same as that of       people, one of      exercises his arms and legs by playing ball, while the other       in a chair or a car all day. Not all of us can become very strong in body or very clever in mind,       all of us can improve our strength and our memory by the same means that      .
Have you ever       that people who cannot read or write usually have      memories than those who can? Why is this? It is often said that man has become the enemy of our planet. This is no exaggeration(夸張), for reports show that man’s greed has done much to destroy the earth. Man, in his greedy desire for financial growth, has polluted the air, land and water, and has robbed our valuable natural resources. Man’s industrial plants pour out poisonous waste that pollutes the sea and puts life in the sea under the threat of dying out; at the same time, they release alarming amounts of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other pollutants. Small wonder that the air now is much warmer and more impure than ever before.
Of course, this is not just because of man’s greed—it is man’s pressing need as well. For instance, in developing countries, huge financial foreign debts have forced governments to approve the cutting of forests for agriculture or ranching. As a result, forests are cut down just to meet man’s immediate needs.
Perhaps unknowingly, man has changed the make-up of the earth's atmosphere. Scientific studies have shown that CFCs used in refrigerators and industrial cleaners are fast destroying the ozone layer—a protective layer in the atmosphere that protects us against the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (紫外線)rays. In fact, documented reports have shown a terrible fact that there are “holes” in the ozone layer over the Antarctic. And they appear to be expanding.
Faced with these environmental problems, world leaders have shown deep concern. The UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) has arranged international agreements like the Vienna convention of 1985 and the Montreal Protocol of 1989 to preserve the ozone layer by controlling the production, use and trade of destructive chemicals.
There may be some doubt as to how effectual these agreements may be, given that some countries still maintain an “I-don’t-care” attitude. Their attitude is probably due to their failure to grasp the importance of the problem. Then, there is no doubt that environmental education on an international scale(規模)is greatly needed, so that all countries, great and small—the “haves” and the “have nots”—may realize their responsibilities for our planet.
In the meantime, the UNEP seems to have taken steps in the right direction, and it is hoped that in the not so distant future, all nations of the world will join hands in saving mother earth.
小題1:Which of the following is a reason for the cutting and burning of forests?
A.To build houses for more population. B.To have land for agriculture.
C.To export trees to other countries.D.To build industrial plants.
小題2:The holes in the ozone layer are largely due to________.
A.man’s research activities B.the greenhouse effect
C.the ultraviolent D.harmful chemicals
小題3:Why don’t some countries care about the problem of the environment?
A.They don’t want to put their lives in danger.
B.They just don’t know how to solve the problem.
C.They haven’t realized the seriousness of the problem.
D.They don’t want to break their international commitment.
小題4:66. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of the environment?
A.Hopeful. B.Unconcerned C.Doubtful D.Objective

What if we could replace oil with a fuel which produced no pollution and which everybody had equal access to?The good news is that we can, In fact, we are swimming in it—literally.
Hydrogen is one of the building blocks of the universe ,Our own sun is basically ,a big ,dense cloud of the stuff ,And hydrogen can be used to create electricity for power ,heat and light.
The problem is that hydrogen is everywhere and nowhere at the same time , It does not exist as a material on its own ,but is always part of something else, So it has to be separated before it can be used.
Most commercial hydrogen in use now is created from natural gas , As oil will start to run out in around the year 2030.,it makes sense to produce as much hydrogen as possible as soon as we can ,But natural gas supplies will also begin to run out soon after, Another source is needed.
Researchers are now using electricity to make water into hydrogen ,Companies are working on the problem in their own areas ,The first commercial hydrogen ,”fuel cells”for computers and mobile phones have already come on to the market ,Auto companies have also invested over US $2billion in the production of hydrogen fuelled cars
Thd nations of a hydrogen fuelled planet would not fight over evergy recourses, There would be a great reduction in pollution ,The only by-product of creating hydrogen is pure drinking water—something that is very scarce in many parts of the world ,But that is not where the good news ends, Once the costs of producing hydrogen have been brought down ,it will possibly provide power for a third of the Earth ‘s population that has no electricity.
And electricity creates wealth, In South A frica over the last decade there has been a large programme of electrification, Thanks to the programme , people do not have to spend their days looking firewood to burn for heat, And with electric light , they can work long into the night.
Some scientists see radical changes in the way the human race co-operates, Hydrogen creates clectricity, and is also created by it. With dual use fuel cells, everyone who consumes energy could also produce it ,Late at night, a man drives home in London and connects his car into the “world-wide hydrogen web”, which it supplies with electricity ,A few hours later, a man in Beijing uses that electricity to power the hydrogen cell in his car, Hydrogen could be the first democratic energy source.
Like all dreams of the future, it seems very far away, But the threat of war and terrorism in the Middle East has made governments and businesses more aware of the need to edn oil dependency and spend more time and money on hydrogen resource, So maybe the threat of war is not a completely bad thing for the future of the human race.
小題1:What does the underlined word “it”in the last but one paragraph refer to?
A.wealthB.hydrogenC.electricityD.fuel
小題2:What is the problem with using hydrogen as energy?
A.It has by-products
B.It has to be separated from other materials
C.It will make energy too cheap
D.It is too far away from us
小題3:Why does the author give the example in the last but one paragraph?
A.To tell us that we produce energy while using hydrogen power
B.To tell us that hydrogen power does not produce pollution
C.To show hydrogen power can stop war
D.To show hydrogen power is cheap
小題4:What is the author’s attitude about the future?
A.skepticalB.negativeC.indifferentD.positive
小題5:What is the passage mainly about?
A.war and energy
B.the future of hydrogen as an energy resource
C.the disadvantages of oil
D.How to end war
