Never in the history of Sierra Leone’s elections have women so actively engaged in politics or competed for parliamentary seats. In the past, women did the dancing and cooking for elections campaigning. In the May 14th elections, we saw over 168 women candidates competitive for President, Vice President and Parliamentary seats.

One would think that about 60% of these women would have emerged as winners. But it was not so, because of our cultural perception of women. We need to change our culture. Women could be active politicians. The Christians in their own way encouraged women to be preachers(傳教士) but the Muslim leaders say women should not head for officiating(主持) prayers.

The same happens in certain parts of the country where women are not part of decision taken in male secret societies. This prevents them from achieving some of their goals. A senior head in one of the ministries told me that she was getting problems with some of her staff members especially the male staff. Most women that come from the Northern part of country experience such problems. Some men are saying that a woman cannot be their leader.

Some women are also prejudiced against their women folks. In the last elections, most woman did not support their colleagues. In some parts of the country, because they are not members of secret societies they were not allowed to contest for chieftaincies (酋長或首領的位置). However, Sierra Leones not withstanding the cultural prejudice against women has witnessed women occupying high public offices. They have been appointed to head certain areas.

Sierra Leone is moving from its past culture. We need a change in our culture. Women all over the world are recognized one way or the other as they are now involved in the use of technology. We now see women as air pilots, and they even attempt to go to travel in space.

In the past, women in Sierra Leone _______.

A.took active part in politics                     B.contested for parliamentary seats

C.danced and cooked for the election campaigning  D.shared the equal rights with men

About 60% of the women engaged in election would have succeeded if .       .

A.there were less prejudice against women          B.less Muslim leaders had objected

C.more women had been engaged in the election     D.more preachers had supported them

The author concludes that the women candidates can’t win the competitive vote because .

A.women is more suitable for the dancing and cooking job

B.women candidates can’t get the support of their folks

C.women prejudice still exists in today’s society

D.women are not capable enough to be a chieftain

The main idea of the passage is .

A.the prejudice against women in various fields

B.women in Sierra Leone, striving for their political rights

C.women in Sierra Leone, challenge for men’s status

D.women in Sierra Leone, being involved in politics

A motivational strategy that parents can employ with their kids, is to frame tasks and responsibilities in the context of what the end benefit is for them. I call this strategy WIIFM

(“What’s in it for me?”).

When a teen can combine an understanding of WIIFM with a sense of passion about achieving a goal, barriers will start to fall away. At our teen summer camps, we arrange an event near the end of the 10-day session that helps campers identify an important life goal and mentally break through their biggest barrier to achieving the goal.

We pass around 12-by-12-inch pine boards. We tell campers that this activity is not about breaking a piece of wood. It’s about how you can get what you want in your life. It’s about breaking barriers to grab on to your goals.

They have the power to break through any barrier. It has nothing to do with body size or physical condition. The skinniest, smallest teens will break through the board almost as easily as the big ones.

We talk to the campers about the reasons they might have had for not reaching their goals in the past. Maybe they got lazy and decided it wasn’t worth the effort. Maybe they failed and let their fear of failure hold them back. But this exercise is about putting the past where it belongs. Today is about making new choices.

By this point in the program, we ask them to think of the goal they’ve set for themselves and write their goals on the boards. Then they write the possible obstacles which may hold them back on the opposite sides. An inch of pine now stands between them and their dreams.

The facilitators and their teammates gather around. The support is strong. One by one, they break through the barriers and grab their goals! All around us teens are laughing, crying, hugging, and holding up the broken pieces of their boards. The confidence shown on their faces is beautiful.

While arranging such an activity in one’s home is almost unrealistic for parents, the value of helping a teen break through a personal barrier simply by being there as moral support can not be overestimated. More help for parents in the form of videos and articles is available at our website, in our blogs and in a monthly e-newsletter.

A. materials to test one’s muscles

B. signs of goals in one’s life

C. assessments to show one’s progress

D. symbols of barriers in one’s life

2.We can learn from the passage that through the event the campers _________.

A. become hard-working               B. get moral support

C. gain confidence                    D. set right goals

3.Which is the best title for the passage?

A. The Power of WIIFM              B. What’s in It for Me

C. The Importance of Goals             D. Motivational Strategies

4.The passage is intended for _____________.

A. teens                      B. parents                      C. campers                    D. Tutors

Do you know why some people are always healthy? If you study all the healthy people in the world, you’ll begin to notice some behaviors many of them share in common. For example, healthy people tend to live an active lifestyle. Exercise is usually a main part of their lives. They spend less time in front of a TV, and more time out and in achieving things and living life. Being on your feet all day and sitting in front of a computer can mean a loss or gain of hundreds of calories a day.

Healthy people surround themselves with other healthy people. We are highly influenced by the people closest to us. Surrounding yourself with healthy people tends to make you healthy by association. Not only are you inspired by your healthy friends, but there’s also a sense of social pressure to be healthy yourself when you’re around them. Who says social pressure has to be a bad thing?

Does your job make you feel bad? Healthy people have a job that makes them happy. We’ve all heard the saying that if you do a job you enjoy, you’ll never work a day in your lives. Happiness and health are highly related. Healthy people tend to be happy. Not only do healthy people tend to like their jobs, but they tend to live for them. They look forward to getting up every day and living their lives to the fullest.

People with self-confidence look healthy. Healthy people have confidence in themselves. They don’t worry about what other people think. They surround themselves with positive people, and they go about their days as if they can achieve anything.

Healthy people like smiling. Try smiling at everyone and not only do you get a smile back, but it makes you feel good about yourself. You’ve just made someone’s day better. Healthy people understand the link between happiness and health, and they tend to walk around with smiles on their faces, or laughter in their hearts.

Healthy people don’t wait for problems to come to them — they go after problems. Regular checkups(檢查) are the normal things for healthy people. People who live long and healthy lives catch problems before they become so big that they destroy their lives. They discover them early and then take action to prevent them from happening again in the future.

Do you consider yourself a healthy person? How many of these habits fall into your life? What other habits of healthy people have you noticed?

Everyone knows about straight-A students. We see them frequently in TV situation comedies and in movies like Revenge(報復)of the Nerds. They get high grades, all right, but only by becoming dull laborers, their noses always stuck in a book. They are not good at social communication and look clumsy(笨拙的) while doing sports.

How, then, do we account for Domenica Roman or Paul Melendres?

Roman is on the tennis team at Fairmont Senior High School. She also sings in the choral group, serves on the student council and is a member of the mathematics society. For two years she has maintained A’s in every subject. Melendres, a freshman at the University of New Mexico, was student-body president at Valley High School in Albuquerque. He played soccer and basketball well, exhibited at the science fair, and meanwhile worked as a reporter on a local television station. Being a speech giver at the graduation ceremony, he achieved straight A’s in his regular classes, plus bonus points for A’s in two college-level courses.

How do super-achievers like Roman and Melendres do it? Brains aren’t the only answer. “Top grades don’t always go to the brightest students,” declares Herbert Walberg, a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who has conducted major studies on super-achieving students. “Knowing how to make the most of your innate(天生的)abilities counts for more. Much more.”

In fact, Walberg says, students with high IQ sometimes don’t do as well as classmates with lower IQ. For them, learning comes too easily and they never find out how to get down.

Hard work isn’t the whole story, either. “It’s not how long you sit there with the books open,” said one of the many-A students we interviewed. “It’s what you do while you’re sitting.” Indeed, some of these students actually put in fewer hours of homework time than their lower-scoring classmates.

The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can readily learn.

1.The underlined word “nerds” can probably be________ .

A.dull bookworms lacking sports and social skills

B.successful top students popular with their peers

C.students with certain learning difficulties

D.born leaders crazy about social activities

2.What can we conclude from the first paragraph?

A.Most TV programs and films are about straight-A students.

B.People have unfavorable impression on straight-A students.

C.Everyone knows about straight-A students from TV or films.

D.Straight-A students are well admired by people in the society.

3.Some students become super-achievers mainly because_________ .

A.they are born cleverer than others

B.they work longer hours at study

C.they make full use of their abilities

D.they know the shortcut to success

4.What will be talked about after the last paragraph?

A.The interviews with more students.

B.The role IQ plays in learning well.

C.The techniques to be better learners.

D.The achievements top students make.

5.What can we infer from the passage?

A.IQ is more important than hard work in study.

B.The brightest students can never get low grades.

C.Top students certainly achieve all-around developments.

D.Students with average IQ can become super-achievers.
