__________________

It is high school spring break season—and if you are a junior (or an overachieving sophomore), chances are you will spend a chunk of your vacation wandering around college campuses with super-enthusiastic, backwards-walking student tour guides.

“As a parent who recently went through this process, I know how stressful these visits can be for both the student and the parent,” Taylor said. “But on the flip side, they can be fun and exciting, as well as offer a great learning experience and a time to bond.”

__________________

For students who live far from schools they are interested in, but who may not have the money for personal visits, start by visiting colleges in your area that are similar to your schools of choice. For example, see first-hand how a large, public campus differs from a small private school.

__________________

Too often students will choose a college based on word of mouth or one that looks great on paper. But once they arrive, they immediately know it’s a mistake (or the right one!). There are many aspects of campus life that you can’t understand until you actually set foot on campus—such as the surrounding areas, the energy of the students and the quality of the facilities. By visiting beforehand, you’ll assure that you apply only to colleges where you’d actually want to spend four years.

_________________

To get a true feel for a campus, you should try to experience it on a typical day—when classes are in session and the campus is a buzz with activity. Try not to visit on a weekend or during the school’s spring break, if possible.

_________________

Since much of the college experience exists outside classroom walls, students should take note of the school’s immediate neighbourhood and of the available amenties in close proximity to the campus—affordable restaurants, museums, movie theatres, concert halls, and shopping areas.

You’re sitting on the train home and the person opposite you yawns(打哈欠). Suddenly, you’re yawning with him, though you’re not tired.

This phenomenon confused scientists for years until a recent study found that people tend to sympathize with fellow humans. Supporting this claim was the discovery that those children who were unable to form normal emotional ties with others did not experience contagious(有感染力的) yawning, which showed that humans communicate regularly with out words.

Hugo Critchley, a neuroscientist, has conducted an experiment recently, which will prove that happiness and sadness can spread like the common cold. According to Critechley, our mind and body are in constant exchange about how we’re feeling. “Emotions are closely linked with states of internal(內(nèi)部的) responses,” he explained. “ There are also more visible changes in our gestures and facial expression. When we’re in a group, these signals can spread to another person. For example, there’s the obvious tendency to smile when smiled at and there are less obvious changes that reflect emotions of surprise, anger or sadness such as a change in our heart rate and blood pressure.

Hugo Critchley further explained, “Our bodies synchronies and when we like the other person, we ever copy his behavior. Next time you chat with a friend, take note of how you’re sitting— it’s pretty likely that you will be the same. Scientists believe it’s our way of telling each other that we’re partners. Through body language, humans give each other very subtle(微妙的) but clear signals that show emotions.”

So, what lessons can we learn from this? “ Spend time with happy people— otherwise your health could suffer,” said Critchley.” When we’re sad, our body goes into fight or flight mode. But when we’re happy, our body works normally and we feel relaxed and positive. So we look bright, our skin glows, we feel healthy and it affects everyone around us.”

According to Hugo Critchley, ________.

  A. emotions are as visible as facial expressions

  B. we yawn more frequently when we have a cold

  C. emotions are connected with states of internal responses

  D. the change of blood pressure is not linked with the change of emotions.

The underlined word “synchronies” in Paragraph 4 means “_____”.

  A. move slowly  B. change rapidly  C. relax temporarily  D. respond accordingly

From the passage we can learn ________.

  A. sadness is as contagious as happiness

  B. anger is less contagious than friendliness

  C. surprise is more contagious than smile

  D. surprise is the most contagious among emotions

Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

  A. Emotions have delicate influence on fellow humans.

  B. Children like copying the actions of the fellow humans.

C.Scientists are still confused about contagious yawning

D.People tend to communicate more with body language.

When we're learning a foreign language, making sense of what we hear is the first step toward fluency. It sounds obvious, but until recently, we didn't know much about how listening works. New research shows that effective listening involves more than simply hearing the words that float past our ears. Rather, it's an active process of analysing information and making meaning.

Studies of skilled language learners have identified specific listening strategies that lead to excellent comprehension. In addition to that benefit, research has shown that learners who adopt these strategies become better listeners.

So what are listening strategies? Skilled learners go into a listening activity with a sense of what they want to get out of it. They set a goal for their listening, and they make predictions about what the speaker will say. Before the talking begins, they review what they already know about the subject, and form an intention to “l(fā)isten out for”what's important. Once they begin listening, these learners maintain their focus; if their attention wanders, they bring it back to the words being spoken. They don't allow themselves to be thrown off by confusing or unfamiliar details. Instead, they take note of what they don't understand and later make inferences(推測)about what those things might mean, based on other clues available to them: their previous knowledge of the subject, the identity of the speaker, and so on. All the while, skilled learners are evaluating what they're hearing and their own understanding of it. They're checking their inferences to see if they're correct.

Such strategies are all about thinking, and they produce a variety of benefits. Research indicates that such learners are better at analysing and storing new information, better at finding the best ways to practice what they have learned. Last year, for example, University of Ottawa researcher Larry Vandergrift published his study of 106 undergraduates who were learning French as a second language. Half of the students were taught in a traditional fashion, listening to and practicing texts spoken aloud. The other half, dealing with the same skill level and taught by the same teacher, were given clear instruction on how to listen. In the journal Language Learning, Vandergrift reported the results: The second group “significantly outperformed(勝過)” the first one on a test of comprehension. In a 2006 study by researchers from Singapore, Chinese speakers who were learning English as a second language reported increased motivation and confidence after they were taught metacognitive strategies.

Though listening is often treated as a way to make others feel appreciated, it's also one of the most powerful tools we have to gain information and insight(洞察力).

One warm day when I was walking in my backyard, I saw a pinecone(松球) on the ground. I picked it up, and some seeds fell out of it. Those seeds would be a tasty treat for a squirrel (松鼠).

I realized that pinecones were not always open like this one. Sometimes cones were tightly closed. I decided to find out why.

I gathered pinecones from my backyard. I watched them for over a year. Here’s what I learned.

Pinecones open and close slowly as the weather changes. When it’s cold or wet, cones are tightly closed. This protects the seeds inside from rain and snow.

When the weather becomes warm and dry, pinecones open. On a hot day, you might even hear the sound of cones popping open. The seeds inside may then fall to the ground. The wind may blow the seeds to places where they can grow into new pine trees. A seed has a better chance of taking root and growing when the weather is warm.

“Pine seeds are an important source of food for many animals,” says Monty Maldonado. He is a pinecone expert with the United States Forest Service. He says squirrels depend on pinecone seeds for most of their meals. They spend lots of time gathering and storing the cones. Maldonado says some animals eat only the seeds from a pinecone. But red squirrels and gray squirrels will eat the whole thing.

Small animals aren’t the only creatures that eat pine seeds. Maldonado says big grizzly bears (灰熊) and people eat them, too.

Seeds inside a pinecone are important for the growth of new trees and as food for animals. It is the pinecone’s job to protect them. So take note of the pinecones you see on the ground. They hold treasures inside.

C.people in the forest are sometimes attacked by grizzly bears

D.most small animals depend on pinecone seeds for their meals

47.We can learn from the passage that on sunny days         .

A.seeds may fall out of the cones

B.squirrels stay still in their nests

C.it’s difficult for a seed to take root

D.the wind will put the pine trees in danger

48.In the last paragraph, the author points out that         .

A.more and more new trees need to be planted in future

B.people should be responsible for protecting animals

C.people should be careful not to damage the pinecones

D.squirrels now have few seeds to feed themselves
