第一節:閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

A

COLUMBIA City, Indiana------For Robin Smith, the hard plastics company where she works has become a worker’s paradise since the work week was cut from 40 to 30 hours last May with no pay cut.

“I love it. I like spending more time with my family and less time at work and getting paid for it,” said the mother of three.

Hard Plastics is part of a growing number of US companies that are experimenting with the so-called “30/40” plan to replace the 40-hour working week.

Unlike in Europe, where cutting the working week is seen as a way to reduce unemployment, US companies see the 30/40 program mainly as a tool to increase productivity.

At the Hard Plastics plant, some 150 women employees work 6-hour daily for a 30-hour working week. And if they show up every day on time, they receive a 10-hour bonus for the week.

“But if you’re even one minute late, sorry Charlie, no bonus,” said Ronald Ronald Richey, the company’s president.

“We’re in a very low unemployment market here, 2.5 percent for the town―Whitley,” said Ronald Richey. “The idea was to draw more quality applicants.”

With 30/40, the company, which employs 325 people at two plants in Indiana and has yearly sales of US $30 million, has greatly broadened its applicant pool. Some 40 people apply every week, among them many with long years of work experience or even college degrees.

The idea was first put forward by industrial psychologist(心理學家) Ron Healey. He said more and more companies were expressing interest in his program and were even testing it.

A. An employee works 30 hours a week with 40 hours’ pay.

B. An employee works for 10 hours extra every week and gets paid.

C. A woman employee with a family has the right to work 30 hours a week.

D. A woman employee gets paid even if she stays at home during work hours.

42. A “30/40 plan” is being tested in Hard Plastics with an aim to _________.

A. let working women enjoy their family life

B. improve employees’ working conditions

C. reduce unemployment in Whitley

D. raise the company’s productivity

43. We can learn from the text that with 30/40, the company is able to _______.

A. employ more women workers

B. employ more college graduates

C. choose their employees from among many applicants

D. help the town in its effort to reduce unemployment

44. What would be the best title for the text?

Visiting a pub is one of Britain’s oldest forms of entertainment. The idea for the first public houses was brought to Britain thousands of years ago by the conquering Roman army. The first pubs served only wine, but after the discovery of hops(啤酒花) in the fourteenth century, pubs began to serve mainly beer, as they do today.

Today, there are 61,000 pubs in the United Kingdom. One of the oldest, Fighting Cocks in St. Albans, Herts, is located in a building that dates back to the 11th century. Modern pubs are often owned by English breweries and serve only their owner’s products. British pubs are required to have a license, which is difficult to obtain, and operate between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. every day except Sunday, when they must close at 10:30 p.m.

The drinking age in Britain is eighteen, but fourteen-year-olds may enter a pub unaccompanied if they order a meal. Children may enter a pub with their parents until 9 p.m., which lets families enjoy reasonably priced pub meals together, and allows pubs to continue in their traditional roles as community centers.

Customs in British pubs differ from those in American bars. In Britain, you must go to the bar to order drinks and food and pay for your purchase immediately, there is no table service. Bartenders are called “landlords” and “barmaids” and they do not expect frequent tipping. To tip a landlord or barmaid, it is customary to tell him to “buy himself one”. He or she may or may not take you up on your offer. At the end of a visit, a polite customer will return his glass to the bar.

45. Which of the following is not allowed in Britain?

   A. Children under 14 entering a pub with their parents

   B. Young men over 14 eating in a pub by themselves.

   C. Children of about 15 drinking in a pub with adults.

   D. Young men at or older than 18 drinking beer in a pub.

46. What can we entertain ourselves with at Fighting Cocks today?

   A. 1000-year-old hops.              B. Mainly beer.

   C. Italian food.                     D. Just wine

47. We can infer from the last paragraph that ______.

   A. British pubs and American bars are completely different

   B. services in British pubs are better than those in American bars

   C. in American bars you can pay the bill after the meal

   D. tip is necessary in both British pubs and American bars

48. This passage is mainly written to _______.

   A. give us some information about British pubs

   B. compare the British pubs and American bars

   C. tell us something about the history of British pubs

   D. let us know some rules in British pubs

From the moment that an animal is born it has to make decisions . It has to decide which of the things around it are for eating , and which are to be avoided ; when to attack and when to run away . The animal is , in fact , playing a very dangerous game with its environment , a game in which it must make decision---a matter of life or death .

Animals' ability to act reasonably is believed to come partly from what we may call "genetic (遺傳性的)learning" , which is different from the individual (個體的) learning that an animal does in the course of its own lifetime . Genetic learning is learning by a species ---animals of the same kind---as a whole , and it is achieved by selection of those members of each generation that happen to act in the right way . However , the role of genetic learning depends upon how similar the future environment is to the past . The more important individual experience is likely to be , the less important is genetic learning as a means of getting over the problems of the survival game . Because most animals live in ever changing evironments from one generation to the next , it is not surprising to find that very few species indeed depend wholly upon genetic learning .

In the great majority of animals , their particular ways of acting in a new environment are a compound (復合體) of individual experience added to the action patterns animals are born with .That is why animals can survive .

49.The animal's life will come to an end_____________.          .

A.if the animal makes a wrong decision     B.if the animal plays a dangerous game

C.when the animal attacks its enemy         D.when the animal runs too slowly

50.Very few species depend entirely on genetic learning because____________.         .

A.each generation has its own way of learning

B.their environments change all the time

C.they can act reasonably on their own

D.it takes their whole life to learn

51.When the environment doesn't change much , _____________.        .

A.animals cannot act in a right way

B.genetic learning is less important for animals

C.individual learning plays a less important role

D.animals cannot get over problems on their on their own

52.Animals' living on generation after generation depends on _____________.         .

A.their natural action pattern with their own experience

B.the lessons they have learnt during their lifetime

       C.their experience in particular environments

D.the knowledge passed on by their parents

Londoners are great readers. They buy huge numbers of newspapers and magazines and of books----- especially paperbacks, which are still comparatively cheap in spite of ever increasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy “proper”books, too, printed on good papers and bound(裝訂) between hard covers.

There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in book selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charring Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here books of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the well-known big bookshop to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock, or will obtain , any kind of books, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on philosophy, politics or any other of the various subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in archaeology!

Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charring Cross Road is not the cheapest. For the really cheap second-hand volumes, the collector must venture off the beaten track, to Farringdon Road, for example, in the east central district of London. Here there is nothing so grand as bookshops. Instead, the booksellers come along each morning and tip out their packs of books onto small handcarts(手推車) which line the streets. And the collectors, some professional and some amateur, who have been waiting for them, rush for the dusty cascades(一疊疊圖書). In places like this one can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old volume that may be worth many pounds.

53. “Londoners are great readers” mean that ________.

A. Londoners are great because they read a lot

B. there are a great number of readers in London

D. Londoners read a lot

56. The best title for this passage is _______.

   A. Bookshops in London              B. The Biggest Bookshop in the World

   C. Charring Cross Road               D. Buying Books in London

E

When you are advised to “get an education” if you want to raise your income, you are only

told half the truth. What you should be told is to get just enough education to provide manpower for your society, but not too much education that would prove an embarrassment to your society.

Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you are occupationally dead, unless your name happens to be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Alva Edison and you can successfully drop out in grade school.

Get a college degree, if possible. With a BA, you are on the launching pad. But now you have to start to put on the brakes. If you go for a master’s degree, make sure it’s an MBA, and only from a first-rate university. Beyond this, the famous law of diminishing returns(報酬遞減規律性) begins to take effect. Do you know, for instance, that heavy truck drivers earn more a year than full professors? Yes, the average 1977 salary for those truckers was $24,000, while the full professor managed to average just $23,930.

A Ph.D is the highest degree you can get, but except in a few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry, where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial purposes, you are facing a dark future. There are more Ph.D unemployed or underemployed in this country than in any other part of the world by far.

If you become a doctor of Philosophy in English or History or Anthropology or Political Science or language or worst of all-in Philosophy, you run the risk of becoming overeducated for our national demands.

Thousands of Ph.Ds are selling shoes, driving cabs, waiting on tables and filling out fruitless applications month after month. And then maybe taking a job in some high school or backwater(死氣沉沉) college that pays much less than the janitor(門衛) earns.

Income and education are closely related. Far enough, that is, to make you useful to the gross national product, but not so far that nobody can turn much of a profit on you.

57. According to the writer, what the society expects of education is to turn out people who __________.

  A. will become loyal citizens to a nation

  B. can always take good care of themselves

  C. will not be a shame to society or their families

  D. can meet the demands as a source of manpower

58. If you are as gifted as Bernard Shaw or Edison _______________.

  A. you can get a high school diploma without difficulty

  B. you can be professionally successful without a diploma

  C. the least you should do is to get a diploma

  D. you will be successful in grade school

59. Many Ph.D are out of work because_____________.

  A. they are of little commercial to the society

  B. they prefer easy jobs with more money

  C. there are fewer jobs in high schools

  D. they are wrongly educated

60. According to the passage, which of the following is Not true?

  A. The higher your education level is, the more money you’ll earn.

  B. If you are too well-educated, you may make things difficult for the society.

  C. One must think carefully before going for a master’s degree.

  D. Bernard Shaw didn’t finish high school, nor did Edison.

      Dear Editor,

We are astonished to learn from a CCTV ad that each year, about 45 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks are produced in our country. 6 million big trees have to be cut down. What shocking facts!

Trees play an important part in keeping a good environment. The ecological value of a tree is 9 times that of the chopsticks made from that tree. The chopstick producers may make some money, but they have destroyed a lot of forest resources at the same time. Moreover, when people throw away or burn the used chopsticks, the environment is badly polluted.

Our government should take measures to limit or stop the production of disposable chopsticks in order to protect the forest resources and our environment.

                                                      Yours sincerely

                                                           Li Hua
