Is it necessary for freshmen to have a laptop when they go to university? Different people have different ideas. Some think it is necessary, and others think not.
The supporters think that children deserve a laptop as an award for their great efforts and achievements. In addition, having a laptop in hand would bring more convenience to their studies and easier access to the Internet, which will in turn absolutely benefit them.
The opponents believe it would add to the financial burden of some families. Besides, many universities are equipped with modern facilities, providing students with adequate computers for use.
As far as I am concerned, it is not necessary to buy a laptop for freshmen. The reason for this is that they can freely have access to the computers in universities. what’s worse, they may be addicted to computer games because of lack of the ability to control themselves, which will have bad effects on their study and health.

Should Yuanmingyuan Be Rebuilt?
Yuanmingyuan, “Garden of all gardens”, was burnt and fell into ruins in 1860． Recently my classmates had a discussion about whether it should be rebuilt or not.

Good afternoon, everyone!
The topic of my speech today is “My Attitude to Pursuit of Fashion in School”.
Now in our school there is a hot pursuit of fashion. Some students live a very expensive life. They have the same hairstyles as their favorable stars and wear top brand of clothes and shoes. Some use expensive mobile phones.
The reasons why they do so are as follows. Firstly, they hope to look smart and special. Secondly, they want to win others’ admiration and respect. In addition, it makes them feel cool .
As far as I am concerned, we students should hold the right sense of values. We should practice thrift in our daily life because it is one of our Chinese traditional virtues. The Ministry of Education has been collecting opinions on the possibility and feasibility of ending the separation of science and arts in high schools. But opinions are different.
Most experts advocate the ending of the division of science and arts. They indicate that the separation of subjects strongly affects the overall quality of our people. It will result in some art students' lacking the spirit of exploring science and some science students' not caring about important issues like society and human beings.
However, many students and parents oppose this opinion, saying that canceling the separation of subjects means putting more pressure and burdens on students, while focusing on fewer courses enables students to excel in specific areas. Furthermore, each student has his or her strengths and weaknesses, which needs to be respected.
In my opinion, separating subjects too early is not good for students' future development. What's more, it is unrealistic to talk about this issue if the present system of examination isn't reformed. Therefore, the Ministry of Education had better take a cautious attitude toward this problem.

Taking part in school activities
As for school activities, students mainly hold two views.
Many students are very enthusiastic about school activities; they have their reasons. Firstly, they think that learning from textbooks is not their only task and they should take any chance to get some practical knowledge. Secondly, they hold that after long hours’ study, they can relax themselves by participating in school activities.
However, a large group of students take little interest in them and spend most of their time on study. They believe that they should make full use of time to study and that school activities have little to do with their further development. Thus sometimes they even laugh at those who take an active part in school activities.
As far as I am concerned, I prefer the first view. On the one hand, we can learn a great deal from other students we meet in activities. Furthermore, the modern society requires many qualities of young students, so “book worms” can’t keep up with thee times.
