Most people think of zoos as safe heavens for animals, where problems such as difficulty finding food and avoiding predators (食肉動物) don’t exist. Therefore, animals in zoos should live to a ripe old age.

But that may not be true for the largest land animals on earth. Scientists have known that elephants in zoos often suffer from poor health. They develop diseases and they are even unable to have babies.

To learn more about how captivity (圈養) affects elephants, a team of international scientists compared the lifespans (壽命) of the zoo-born elephants with the lifespans of thousands of wild elephants. They also compared some Asian elephants living in zoos with some Asian elephants which work in logging camp (伐木場), over almost the same time period.

The team found that elephants born in zoos lived an average of 16.9 years, but elephants that died of natural causes lived an average of 56 years. Asian elephants followed a similar pattern. In zoos, they lived 18.9 years, while those in the logging camp lived 41.7 years.

Scientists don’t yet know why wild elephants seem to live so much better than their zoo-raised counterparts (同類). Georgia Mason, a biologist at the University of Guelph in Canada, who led the study, thinks stress and obesity (肥胖) may be to blame. Zoo elephants don’t get the same kind of exercise they would in the wild. Elephants’ social lives are also much different in zoos than in the wild, where they live in large family groups.

Most people believe that________.

A. animals in zoos should live a longer life

B. zoos are not good for animals to live in

C. zoos are not suitable for large animals

D. captivity can affect animals in many ways

The purpose of the international scientists is_________.

A. to compare the lifespans of different animals

B. to find out how captivity affects elephants

C. to learn the lifespans of male and female elephants

D. to compare the lifespans of elephants in different places

Which elephants live the longest according to the study?

A. Elephants born in zoos.

B. Elephants that live in the wild.

C. Elephants that work in logging camps.

D. Female Asian elephants in logging camps.

We can infer from the passage that_________.

A. elephants in zoos suffer less stress than those in the wild

B. elephants in zoos live an easy life

C. social lives are not important to elephants

D. zoo life can be stressful to elephants

What are the advantages to elephants in the wild according to the passage?

C
Have you ever picked a job based on the fact that you were good at it but later found it made you feel very uncomfortable over time? When you select your career, there’s whole lot more to it than assessing your skills and matching them with a particular position. If you ignore your personality, it will hurt you long-term regardless of your skills or the job's pay. There are several areas of your personality that you need to consider to help you find a good job. Here are a few of those main areas:
1) Do you prefer working alone or with other people?
There are isolating(使孤立) jobs that will drive an outgoing person crazy and also interactive jobs that will make a shy person uneasy. Most people are not extremes in either direction but do have a tendency that they prefer. There are also positions that are sometimes a combination of the two, which may be best for someone in the middle who adapts easily to either situation.
2) How do you handle change?
Most jobs these days have some elements of change to them, but some are more than others. If you need stability in your life, you may need a job where the changes don't happen so often. Other people would be bored of the same daily routine.
3) Do you enjoy working with computers?
I do see this as a kind of personality characteristic. There are people who are happy to spend more than 40 hours a week on a computer, while there are others who need a lot of human interaction throughout the day. Again, these are extremes and you'll likely find a lot of positions somewhere in the middle as well.
4) What type of work environment do you enjoy?
This can range from being in a large building with a lot of people you won't know immediately to a smaller setting where you'll get to know almost all the people there fairly quickly.
5) How do you like to get paid?
Some people are motivated by the pay they get, while others feel too stressed to be like that. The variety of payment designs in the sales industry is a typical example for this.
Anyway, these are a great starting point for you. I've seen it over and over again with people that they make more money over time when they do something they love. It may take you a little longer, but making a move to do what you have a passion for can change the course of your life for the better.
49.This passage mainly talks about the importance of _______.
A.different jobs      B.personalities    C.personal skills     D.job’s pay
50.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Isolating jobs usually drive people mad.
B.Interactive jobs make people shy easily.
C.Extreme people tend to work with others.
D.Almost everyone has a tendency in jobs.
51.What is the missing word about a job search in the following chart?
A.Design   B.Skills     C.Cooperation    D.Hobbies

52.What is the best title for this passage?
A.Lifestyles and Job Pay    B.Jobs and Environment
C.Job Skills and Abilities    D.Personalities and Jobs

Most people know that a wedding ring is symbolic of the bond of love and commitment between two people. But not everyone knows about the history behind this small yet powerful symbol. The history of the wedding ring goes back not just hundreds but thousands of years. No other currently practiced wedding tradition has been around as long.
The Egyptians were the first recorded civilization to use the wedding ring.In Egyptian hieroglyphics(象形文字) a circle represented eternity.Once a woman accepted the ring she became the “property” of the person who gave it to her and she was in a sense “his.” The first wedding ring could have been made of braided grass or hay (which would have been changed often), ivory, bone, or leather.Eventually, metal was used, but the first wedding bands were crude(未加工的) and rough. However, the sentiment remained the same-eternal commitment and love.
The Egyptians wore the wedding ring on the left hand because it was believed that a vein in the left hand went straight to the heart. This tradition is still commonly practiced today in most parts of the world largely for practical purposes (most people are right handed.) It is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand. But there are some countries and groups which do not follow this tradition. In the Jewish faith, the wedding ring is put on the index finger.Roman Catholics traditionally wore their wedding band on the right hand, and in many countries and regions in Europe some people still follow this tradition.
It is interesting to note that in the long history of the wedding ring that it is only in the last century that men have begun to wear them. However, now both men and women show their love and commitment by exchanging rings on their wedding day.
Once you begin shopping for rings you may be amazed by the choices that await you. There are several different types of metals: traditional gold, white gold, platinum, and titanium. You can have an inscription put on the inside of the band if you like. Some people are even choosing a tattoo band. The styles vary from a simple, yet elegant band to an elaborate ring covered with jewels. If you do not buy the wedding and engagement rings as a set you will want to be sure the styles are compatible.Choose carefully because this choice will need to stand the test of eternity.
56.What’s the best title for this passage?
A.History of rings                      B.Interesting facts about rings
C.Different beliefs about rings               D.The meaning of the rings.
57.What may the word “eternity” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Elegance     B.Marriage     C.Wedding      D.Foreverness
58.Which is NOT true according to the passage?

B.One should be careful of choosing a ring in a shop from different kinds.
C.Jewish are so faithful to their beliefs to wear rings on the fourth finger.
D.Now most people in the world still follow Roman Catholics traditionally.
59.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Men were looked upon by women for thousands years.
B.Only women have the right to make themselves beautiful.
C.women wore rings thousands of years earlier than men.
D.You can have an inscription put on the inside the band.

C
We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively(被動地).We achieve it actively by direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive.Conditioned as we are to passive learning, it’s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay and rumor(謠言).
Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn’t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it.Then the two written statements are compared.Typically, the original message has changed.
That’s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping(打上標記)it with their own personal style.Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors: A statement of opinion by one writer may be re-stated as fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another; and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.
49.According to the passage, passive learning may occur in _______.
A.doing a medical experiment        B.solving a math problem
C.visiting an exhibition          D.doing scientific reasoning
50.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refers to _____.
A.active learning     B.knowledge     C.communication    D.passive learning
51.The author mentions the game Rumor to show that _____.
A.a message may be changed when being passed on
B.a message should be delivered in different ways
C.people may have problems with their sense of hearing
D.people tend not to believe in what they know as rumor
52.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Active learning is less important.
B.Passive learning may not be reliable.
C.Active learning occurs more frequently.
D.Passive learning is not found among scholars.

Farming was once the chief way of life in nearly every country. People cannot live without food, and nearly all their food comes from crops and animals raised on farms. Not many people farm for a living any more, but farming remains the most important work in the world.
Before the nineteenth century, the typical American family lived on a small farm. They raised pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, and planted corn, fruits, garden vegetables, and wheat. Everyone worked long and hard, but the results were often poor. Families barely harvested enough food for themselves. This situation began to change during the last half of the 1800's and it changed remarkably(明顯地) in the next century.
Scientific methods and labor-saving machinery have made farming increasingly productive. The development of improved plant varieties and fertilizers has helped double and even triple the production of some major crops. More scientific animal care and animal raising have helped increase the amount of meat and products that animals produce. At the same time, the use of tractors and other modern farm equipment has sharply reduced the need for farm labor.
As farming has become less important as a way of life in the United States, it has become more important as a source which offers materials to industry. Today's successful farmers are experts not just in agriculture but also in accounting, marketing, and finance. Farms that are not run in a similar way have great difficulty surviving.
【小題1】 We are told in the first paragraph about ____.

A.the history of farmingB.the importance of farming
C.the development of farmingD.the changes of farming
【小題2】 Which of the following describes American farming before the 19th century?
A.Farmers didn’t work hard on their farms.
B.Farmers used tractors to help them.
C.Farming was the main way of living for most people.
D.Farmers could supply materials to industry.
【小題3】 Crop production has increased greatly now thanks to all the following EXCEPT __.
A.scientific methodsB.labor- saving machinery
C.farmers’ hard workD.chemical fertilizers
【小題4】 The passage mainly talks about_____.
A.the advantages of American farmingB.the changes in American farming
C.the situation of American farmsD.how rapidly farming has developed

C
We are so used to having a cup of tea before heading off to work, during work or after getting back from work. Tea breaks are more like a custom that takes place regularly several times a day. This tea break tradition has been happening during the past 200 years or so. Tea just happens to be a wonderful drink for most of us. The day simply feels incomplete without a hot cup of tea. However, is tea good for you?
In 2006, the papers were flooded with the news of research showing that drinking 2-3 cups of tea a day is as beneficial as drinking water, with even some additional health benefits. Another report published in November 2009, stated that drinking up to eight cups of tea a day is good for you. The research conducted by nutrition expert Dr. Carrie Ruxton, debunked (揭示…的真相)the popular stories about caffeinated(含咖啡因的)drinks like tea, coffee and cocoa. According to Dr. Ruxton, the caffeine present in tea tends to lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes. She says that drinking 8 cups of tea a day gives the drinkers “the best levels of health-giving substances” present in tea and other caffeinated drinks.
Contrary to popular belief that tea does not contain more caffeine than coffee, it actually contains almost half the amount. Caffeine is a natural thing found in many types of food and drink. It’s also something that can give you a much needed lift for a demanding and tiring afternoon ahead. Research shows that proper amounts of caffeine are safe for most people.
So why not take full advantage of your tea breaks at work, or make time for afternoon tea while out shopping at the weekend? And remember that tea is not just a great drink, but it helps to keep you looking and feeling healthy.
59. What is mainly talked about in the first paragraph?
A. The types of tea.  B. The tea custom     C. How to drink tea    D. When to drink tea.
60. Reports in the newspapers show that ______.
A. drinking tea is a healthy habit                 B. new ways of drinking tea appear
C. drinking tea is harmful to health             D. people don’t like to drink tea any more
61. Caffeine in tea ____.
A. can make you energetic                       B. gives you a good rest
C. may cause heart attacks                       D. is more than that in coffee
62. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Tea and disease                                   B. Tea—a healthy drink
C. Tea, coffee and cocoa                          D. Drink tea or coffee
