When I was a child, my mom liked to make food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night   36  when she made dinner after a long,   37  day at work.
On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and extremely burned toast in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone   38  ! Yet all my dad did was to   39  his toast, smile at my mom, and ask me how my day was at school. I don’t remember what I   40  him that night, but I do remember   41  him smear(涂上)butter on that toast and eat   42  bite!
43  I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom   44  to my dad for burning the toast.   45  I’ll never forget what he said: “Baby, I   46  burnt toast.”
Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy   47  and I asked him if he really liked his toast burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, “Son, your mom   48  a hard day at work today and she’s really   49 . And besides, a little burnt toast never   50  anyone!”
You know, life is full of imperfect things…and imperfect people. I’m not the best housekeeper or cook. What I’ve learned over the years is that learning to accept each other’s   51  and choosing to celebrate each other’s differences is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy and   52  relationship.
And this is my prayer for you today: you’ll learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and   53  them at the feet of God, because   54 , he’s the only one who will be able to give you a relationship where burnt toast isn’t a deal-breaker(煞風景)!
We could extend(推廣)this to any relationship in fact   55  understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!

It’s only after three weeks into a new job that I made a serious mistake. My boss called it “extremely embarrassing” in a company-wide e-mail — which,    31  , he wrote because he felt he needed to explain that what I did was something    32  in the company should ever do.
I wish I   33   give a good excuse for what I did. At the very least, I wish I could explain it somehow —    34  it on youth, inexperience or ignorance. Unfortunately, I’m    35  , experienced and I know better.

When I learned that my 71-year-old mother was playing Scrabble—a word game—against herself, I knew I had to do something. My husband suggested we give her a computer to play against. I wasn’t sure my mother was ready for it. After all, it had taken 15 years to persuade her to buy an electric cooker. Even so, we packed up our old computer and delivered it to my parents’ home. And so began my mother’s adventure in the world of computers.
It also marked the beginning of an unusual teaching task for me. I’ve taught people of all ages, but I never thought I would be teaching my mother how to do anything. She has been the one teaching me all my life; to cook and sew; to enjoy the good times and put up with the bad. Now it was my turn to give something back.
It wasn’t easy at the beginning. There was so much to explain and to introduce. Slowly but surely, my mother caught on, making notes in a little notebook. After a few months of Scrabble and other games, I decided it was time to introduce her to word processing(文字處理). This proved to be a bigger challenge(挑戰) to her, so I gave her some homework. I asked her to write me a letter, using different letter types, colors and spaces.
“Are you demanding this with your kindergarten pupils?” she said.
“No, of course not,” I said. “They already know how to use a computer.”
My mother isn’t the only one experiencing a fast personal growth period. Thanks to the computer, my father has finally got over his phone allergy(過敏反應). For as long as I remember, and time I called, my mother would answer, Dad and I have had more phone conversations in the last two months than we’ve had in the past 20 years.

小題4:After the computer was brought home, the author’s father__________.

In 1997, I found myself in a situation I never thought I'd be in: alone and begging for money in New York. My father had been separated from our family, and my mother had  recently died from complications related to AIDS. What I remember most about such nights is lying on the cold marble floor and using my backpack for a pillow.
Even though I had lost my family,  I made choices every single day to turn my life around. There was the haven for homeless teenagers called the Door, a non-profit organization that provided me with guidance, medical care and food, all of which kept me going while I completed my homework in train stations and under hallway lights. Perhaps the most surprising help though, I did not seek out﹔it found me.  The New York Times told my story. In the weeks that followed, dozens of strangers reached out to me from all across the United States. At my high school, I began receiving handwritten letters of encouragement. Strangers showed up bearing clothes, books, and even hugs. Since the article mentioned I was applying to Harvard, one woman knitted a blanket for me.  She attached this note to the box it was posted in: "It gets cold in those dorms. May you warm yourself knowing that people care about you".
With the help of these people, my life today bears no resemblance at all to my life then. I graduated not only from high school but also from Harvard University.
Before these people — some of them nameless— I just didn't realize how good people could be. But now I do, and I can say that the people who helped me have forever changed me. They are the reason behind my decision to join the board at the Door so that I can be part of a small team of people opening a high school for homeless teenagers .They are the reason I dedicate my life to opening pathways for others. I am one of those people who are terrible at saying no. I take on too many projects at once, and spend too much of my time doing things I’d rather not be doing. I get stuff done, but it’s not always the best I can do, or the best way I could spend my time.
That’s why my newest goal, both as a professional and a person, is to be a quitter.
Being a quitter isn’t being someone who gives up, who doesn’t see important things through to the end. I desire to be the opposite of that. The quitter I want to be is someone who gets out when there’s no value in what he’s doing, or when that value comes at the expense of something more important.
We get involved in something, realize we don’t want to be a part of it, but keep on going. We say “Well, I’ve already invested so much time in this, I might as well stick it out.” A friend of mine once told me, “I knew I was an adult when I could stop reading a book, even after getting 500 pages into it.” Odd though it sounds, we all tend to do this.
I propose the opposite: quit as often as possible, regardless of project status or time invested. If you’re reading a book, and don’t like it, stop reading. Cut your losses, realize that the smartest thing to do is stop before your losses grow even more, and quit. Instead of reading an entire book you hate, read half of a bad one and half of a good one. Isn’t that a better use of your time?
Step back for a second. Let’s learn how to say “no” at the beginning, or in the middle, and free up more of our time to do the things we’d like to be doing, and the things actually worth doing.
Saying no is hard, and admitting a mistaken yes is even harder. But if we do both, we’ll start to make sure that we’re spending our time creating value, rather than increasing our losses. Let’s be quitters together.
小題1:The author wants to be a quitter, because he/she        .
A.wishes to have more time for relaxation
B.hopes to improve his/her personality
C.expects to make more efficient use of his/her time
D.has found it hard to do several things at one time
小題2:In what circumstances does the author suggest quitting is a good idea?
A.When you know a task cannot be finished.
B.When you feel tired and need a rest.
C.When you meet with difficulties along the way.
D.When you realize what you are doing is not worth the time.
小題3:The message the author tries to convey is to        .
A.learn to say noB.create more value
C.live your life to the fullestD.stop doing many things at a time
