IN a 30-minute film called The Chase, a girl tries to catch a thief and finally takes him down with martial arts (武術) skills.
Anything special? Thirteen-year-old US girl Sophia Tran wrote, shot and performed in the film. She played the girl in the movie and her father, Steven, played the thief.
Now an eighth-grader at Ladera Ranch Middle School, California, Tran wrote The Chase over the summer of 2008. She shot the film in the fall of 2008 before holding the premiere (首映式) at her home in January the next year.
“It is important to have passion in filmmaking or you are not going to make it,” the quiet teenager said with a smile. “Also, you should read a lot of books about filmmaking.”
Tran thinks that many screenplays don't have any “suspense (懸念) as the film progresses.” She is now working on a movie which she says will be a suspense story.
Steven says his daughter has enjoyed drama and action movies since she was 7.
“She started to be interested in how stories are adapted (改編) to a screenplay,” Steven said. “And she wrote her own books when she was in second grade.”
But Tran also has a big heart. She sold DVD copies of her film The Chase for $10 each to family and friends. She then donated $400 from the DVD sales to her school to buy new computers.
57.   Sophia Tran played _____ in her movie.
A. a thief          B. a doctor                       C. a girl           D. a police woman
58.   Sophia Tran shot the film _____.

One winter evening, a storekeeper was going to close up  his shop. Suddenly he saw Seth, a lazy, good – for – nothing fellow grasp a pound of fresh butter and hid it in his hat. No sooner had the storekeeper seen the act than he hit upon exactly the right revenge(報復). He would punish the thief, and satisfy his own appetite for fun.
Seth had his hat on his head, and the butter in his hat. He was anxious to leave. However, the rightful owner of the butter offered him a cup of hot drink, took him by the shoulders and planted him in a seat close to the stove. The grocer filled in the stove as many sticks of wood as he could. Seth already could feel the butter settling down closer to his hair, so he jumped up, declaring that he must go. “Sit down; don’t be in such a hurry,” replied the grocer, pushing him back into the chair again.
Streak after streak of the butter came pouring from under the poor man’s hat. The fun-loving grocer kept on putting wood into the stove. Then, as if surprised, he remarked, “You seem to be sweating as if you were warm! Let me put your hat away for you.”
“No! ” exclaimed poor Seth at last, unable to stand it a moment longer. “ No, I must go; let me out.” A greasy (油膩的) waterfall of butter was now pouring down the poor man’s face and neck, dipping into his clothes, and trickling down his body into his boots. I have said enough to you about the fact that no two native speakers of English speak it alike, but perhaps you are clever enough to ask me whether I myself speak it in the same way.
I must    21     at once that I do not. Nobody does. I am at present speaking to an audience of many thousands of gramophonists(學話者), many of    22     are trying hard to follow my words, syllable by syllable. If I were to speak to you as carelessly as I speak to my wife at home, this record would be    23    ; and if I were to speak to my wife at home as carefully as I am speaking to you, she would think that I was going mad.
As a public speaker I have to take care that every word I say is heard clearly at the far    24    of large halls containing thousands of people. “But at home, when I have to consider only my wife sitting    25     six feet of me at breakfast, I take so little pains with my speech that very often,    26     giving me the expected answer, she says, “Don’t mumble, and don’t turn you head away when you speak. I can’t hear a word you are saying.” And she also is a little careless. Sometimes I have to say “what” two or three times during our meal. And she    27     me of growing deafer and deafer, though she does not say so, because, as I am now over seventy, it might be true.
We all have company manners. If you were to    28     a strange family and to listen through the keyhole before going in---not that I would suggest for a moment that you are capable of doing such a very unladylike or ungentlemanlike thing; but still, if, in your enthusiasm for studying languages you could bring yourself to do it just for a few seconds to hear how a family speak to one another when there is    29     listening to them, and then walk into the room and hear how very    30     they speak in your presence, the change would surprise you. Even when our home manners are as good as our company manners---and of course they ought to be better --- they are always different; and the difference is greater in speech than in anything else.
