As far back as 700 B.C., man had talked about children being cared for by wolves. Romulus and Remus, the old story twin founders of Rome, were said to have been cared for by wolves. It is believed that when a she-wolf loses her baby, she tries to get a human child to take its place. This idea did not become believable until the late nineteenth century when a French doctor actually found a ten-year-old boy having nothing on walking around in the woods. Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course , there have always been people who have looked for adventure---- those who have climbed the highest mountains , travelled in unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans . Now , however , there are people who hunt for an immediate excitement from a dangerous activity , which may only last a few minutes or even seconds .

I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity . You jump from a high place (perhaps a bridge or a hot - air balloon) 200 metres above the ground with an elastic (彈性的) rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometres an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground . It is said that 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping . Other activities which most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high mountains .

Why do people take part in such activities as these ? Some scientists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and uninteresting . Not very long ago, people's lives were constantly in danger. They had to go out and hunt for food. If they were badly ill ,it was not easy for them to get well again , In fact , life was a continuous battle for living and existing.

Nowadays , according to many people , life offers little excitement . They live and work in safe conditions , they buy food in shops ,and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill . The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping .

1.A suitable title for the text is “________”.

[ ]

A.Dangerous sports: what and why?

B.The tiredness of modern life

C.Bungee jumping : Is it really dangerous

D.The need for excitement

2.More and more people today________ .

[ ]

A.a(chǎn)re trying activities such as bungee jumping

B.a(chǎn)re climbing the highest mountains

C.a(chǎn)re coming close to death in sports

D.a(chǎn)re looking for adventures such as traveling in unknown places.

3.In bungee jumping , you ________.

[ ]

A.jump as high as you can

B.slide down a rope to the ground

C.tie yourself to a rope and fall to the ground

D.fall towards the ground without a rope

4.People probably take part in dangerous sports nowadays because ________.

[ ]

A.they have a lot of free time.

B.they can go to hospital if they are injured

C.their lives are short of excitement

D.they no longer need to hunt for food.

5.The writer of the text has a________ attitude(態(tài)度)towards dangerous sports.

[ ]

A.positive(肯定的)
B.negative(否定的)
C.nervous
D.neutral(中立的)

Because plants cannot move or talk, most people believe that they have no feelings and that they cannot receive signals (信號) from outside. However, this may not be completely true.

People who studied plants have found out that plants carry a small electrical charge (電荷). It is possible to measure this charge with a small piece of equipment called“galvanometer”. The galvanometer is placed on a leaf of the plant, and it records any changes in the electrical field of the leaf. Humans have a similar field which can change when we are shocked or frightened.

A man called Backster used a galvanometer for his studies of plants and was very surprised at his results. He found that if he had two or more plants in a room and he began to destroy one of them-perhaps by pulling off leaves or by pulling it out of its pot?-then the galvanometer on the leaves of the other plants showed a change in the electrical field. It seemed as if the plants were signalling a feeling of shock. This happened not only when Backster started to destroy plants, but also when he destroyed other living things such as insects(昆蟲).

Backster said that the plants also knew if someone had destroyed a living thing some distance away, because they signalled when a man who had just cut down a tree entered the room.

Another scientist, named Sauvin, achieved similar results to Backster's. He kept galvanometers fixed to his plants all the time and checked regularly to see what the plants were doing. If he was out of the office, he telephoned to find out about the signals the plants were sending. In this way, he found that the plants were sending out signals at the exact times when he felt strong pleasure or pain. In fact, Sauvin could cause a change in the electrical field of his plants over a distance of a few miles simply by thinking about them.

1.Most people believe that plants have no feelings because ________.

[ ]

A.they do not move or speak

B.they cannot receive signals from outside

C.this may not be completely true

D.this is unbelievable

2.Backster was surprised at the results of his studies because ________.

[ ]

A.he destroyed an insect

B.he destroyed a plant by pulling off its leaves

C.he found that plants could express feelings of shock

D.he found that plants could move and speak after all

3.The plants sent out signals ________.

[ ]

A.only when Backster started to destroy plants

B.when Backster destroyed plants or other living things

C.only when he destroyed things such as insects

D.only when Backster placed the galvanometer on the leaves of the plants

4.The scientist called Sauvin ________.

[ ]

A.did not agree with Backster's ideas

B.did not get the same sort of results as Backster did

C.got different results from Backster's

D.found out some of the same things that Backster did

5.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

[ ]

A.The electrical charge plants carry may shock or frighten us

B.A tree will signal when it has been cut down

C.Sauvin could make his plants send out signals some distance away

D.Plants have feelings because they can receive signals without moving

Raising pets is not a new thing in China, but recently it has taken on a new meaning.

A famous Chinese saying, “wan wu sang zhi”has it that riding a hobby destroys one's will to make progress. The saying had been so popular that even today many people still consider raising pets as a hobby of the idle (游手好閑)。

Pet food is sold in almost all supermarkets and many specialty stores for getting needs have been established.

Animal hospitals provide various medical services for sick dogs and cats, and pet exchange fairs are held regularly. At the China International Pet Show which took place recently in Beijing, more than 100 factories from across the country exhibited their products. That's not a complete picture.” Wang added that pets are friends in the real sense of the word, not just playthings.“Anyone with a loving nature can raise pets.” Still, the high cost of keeping a pet is something many people have to think about. “I like dogs and cats. But I have neither time. nor money to raise them. ”said Li Jun. in her 40' s a civil servant from Beijing.

The cost of raising a dog is high in Beijing, where registration (登記)is a must for all dogs and costs 5 , 000 yuan for each animal. In addition, pet owners must pay for regular injection of Vaccines(疫苗). Most of all, dog food is quite expensive.
