Given that many people's moods (情緒)are regulated by the chemical action of chocolate, it was probably only a matter of time before somebody made the chocolate shop similar to a drug store of Chinese medicine. Looking like a setting from the film Charlie&the Chocolate Factory, Singapore's Chocolate Research Facility (CRF) has over 100 varieties of chocolates.its founder is Chris Lee who grew up at his parents' corner store with one hand almost always in the jar of sweets.

If the CRF seems to be a smart idea, that's because Lee is not merely a seasoned salesperson but also head of a marketing department that has business relations with big names such as Levi's and Sony. That idea surely results in the imagination at work when it comes to making different flavored(味道)chocolates.

The CRF's produce is "green". made within the country and divided into 10 lines, with the Alcohol Series being the most popular. The Exotic Series一with Sichuan pepper, red bean (豆).cheese and other flavors一also does well and is fun to taste. And for chocolate snobs, who think that they have a better knowledge of chocolate than others, the Connoisseur Series uses cocoa beans from Togo, Cuba, Venezuela , and Ghana, among others.

1.What is good about chocolate?

A.It serves as a suitable gift.

B.It works as an effective medicine.

C.It helps improve the state of mind.

D.It strengthens business relations.

2.Why is Chris Lee able to develop his idea of the CRF?

A.He knows the importance of research.

B.He learns form shops of similar types.

C.He has the support of many big names

D.He has a lot of marketing experience.

3.Which line of the CRF produce sells best?

A.The Connoisseur Series.

B.The Exotic Series.

C.The Alcohol Series.

D.The Sichuan Series.

4.The words "chocolate snobs" in Paragraph 3 probably refer to people who

A.are particular about chocolate

B.know little about cocoa beans

C.look down upon others

D.like to try new flavors

【答案】

For most of us, the rain that falls on our roof runs off into the ground or the sewer(下水道) system. But if you want to save a little water and reuse it on your lawns or plants --- or even use it for laundry, dishes, or other needs --- collecting rainwater from your gutter’s downspouts(檐槽的水落管) is a no-brainer.
According to John C. Davis, writing in E / The Environmental Magazine, just about any homeowner can collect rainwater, given that the roof and gutters do most of the work. And since an inch of rain falling on a 2,000-square-foot roof produces some 1,200 gallons of water, you can harvest enough to water your lawn or garden.
Plants and grass actually do better when fed rainwater instead of tap water, which is usually treated with substances that can hold back plant growth. Using rainwater can also extend the life of pipes, since the salts added to tap water may gradually damage the pipes. However, homeowners should set up a water purification system if they do plan to use rainwater for inside needs.
Rainwater harvesting can also be good for the local community, as it reduces the erosion, flooding, and pollution associated with heavy rainfall, and reduces dependence on public water supplies. So some states fund rainwater collection systems in their local communities.
Many varieties of rain barrel(桶) systems, starting at just $100, are available for home use. A typical setup is simply a rain barrel positioned under a gutter’s downspout. Skillful homeowners can make their own water harvesting systems, but buying one is a lot easier. Most garden centres offer a range of choices as well as tips.

C
I’ve been told that in China, having a pet, particularly a dog,is often considered to be a status(地位)symbol because it shows the family can afford to have an animal. It’s very different here.
In Canada it’s common to have pets. Many people have dogs;many others have cats, fish, birds or rabbits. Some keep what we call exotic(奇異的)pets, although keeping exotic animals is difficult, and because it can also be hard on the animals, the keeping of some exotic animals is not allowed by law. Some people do it anyway.
I like animals. As far back as I can remember my family has always had cats. Our cats.of course, wanted to go outside and it seemed reasonable to let them wander the neighborhood finding birds to run after, trees to climb and sunny places to sleep. As we always lived in a city, however, there was a problem.I remember more than once losing a cat that was killed by a car and it was heartbreaking.
Now,my wife and I lived in a small town.We no longer have a house—we live in an apartment(公寓).We have a cat named Callie and she never goes out except onto the halcony(陽臺)so cars are no longer a problem. She’s about sixteen years old and will probably live to be twenty or more. The trouble will come when she dies. We’ve had a pet for so long that it seems like a natural part of our lives and without a cat around the  room it will seem somehow empty. On the other hand,we’re getting older and, given that a cat can live about twenty years we wonder if we’ll ever have another after Callie goes.
Having a pet is very good for a number of reasons. It helps to teach children how to look after a living creature, makes them realize that animals have feelings just like we do and that, in many ways,we depend on each other. For older people like me an animal is a companion(伙伴)and a comfort to have around.A pet, properly treated, returns the favor by giving back unconditional love.Wouldn’t this world be a great place if people could learn how to do that !
64.The writer keeps a cat as a pet now because___________.
A.she feels lonely living in the countryside
B.it acts as her companion
C.her family is used to keeping a cat
D.it can helps her teach her children.
65.What will happen after the writer’s pet,Callie dies?
A.She will surely buy another one.     B.She won’t keep pets any longer.
C.She will remember it for a long time. D.Her room will be empty.
66.What should people do in keeping a pet according to the text?
A.Not allow it to go out of the room.   B.Catch birds for him to play with.
C.Let it wander outside as it likes.     D.Not live in the city.
67.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.How to keep a pet.               B.My pet,Callie.
C.Keeping Pets in Canada.           D.It’s the Animal in Me.

If Barack Obama's wife and kids thought they'd be getting his undivided attention during their long-awaited summer holiday, perhaps they should think again.
The US President kicked off his vacation by revealing that, in addition to endless games of tennis and golf, he plans to spend the week ploughing through five books, weighing in at an astonishing 2,300 pages. His summer reading list, unveiled(透露) by the White House, contains two heavyweight works of non–fiction and three novels.
On top of the president’s table is Hot, Flat and Crowded, by New York Times columnist, Thomas Friedman. Subtitled "why we need a green revolution", it makes a leftish(左傾的) call to arms regarding the future of the planet.
Mr Obama's second choice is historian David McCullough's biography of John Adams, the often under-rated second US president, who was the subject of an award-winning HBO docu-drama(紀實劇)last year.
The novels include two crime thrillers: Richard Price's Lush Life, and The Way Home, a novel by George Pelecanos set in Washington, DC – which, much like Obama's best-selling autobiography(自傳), explores the relationship between a father and his son.
Completing the set is the novel Plainsong, by a little-known writer called Kent Haruf. Set in a small town on the Colorado plains, its existence on the reading list may reassure voters that Middle America has not been ignored by their commander-in-chief.
Publishers are keeping an eye on whether the famous "Obama bounce" – which has helped sales at the first family's favourite clothes stores, such as J Crew – will continue to apply to their troubled industry. The President's endorsement(認可) is said to have lifted sales of Joseph O'Neill's novel Netherland about cricket in Holland and New York last year.
Given that President Obama has already spent a portion of his week so far playing golf, beating Michelle at tennis, and visiting friends, questions will inevitably(不可避免地) be asked about his ability to put any dent(挫傷) at all in the ambitious reading list.
To finish all five books, he would have to manage more than 300 pages every day – quite an "ask" when a small portion of his time must also be spent running the country.
57. What’s the function of the first paragraph?

A. To give an example.
B. To introduce a topic.
C. To describe a hope.
D. To offer an argument.
58. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Some people doubted if the president could finish his books.
B. The Way Home is a book which explores the relationship between a father and his son.
C. Lush life, set in Washington, is a novel written by Richard Price.
D. Thanks to Obama, sales of Netherland have been lifted.
59. Which of the following was NOT a book the President planned to read?
A. John Adams.
B. Netherland.
C. Hot, Flat and Crowded.
D. Lush Life.
60. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Obama’s Hobbies
B. Obama’s Holiday Plan
C. Obama’s Holiday Life
D. Obama’s Holiday Book List

科目:高中英語 來源:2012-2013學年江西省上饒市高三第一次聯考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, "In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence". Given that this is the ease, why aren't students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive ears, or stay physically fit?

First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult. For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn't in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.

Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution: stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well Rude words, namecalling, and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.

After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution : listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker's position. Then the two people should change roles.

Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesn't mean trying to figure out what's wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn't, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution.

There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn't mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, “64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.

1.This article is mainly about ________.

A.the lives of school children

B.the cause of arguments in schools

C.how to analyze youth violence

D.how to deal with school conflicts

2.From Paragraph 2 we can learn that ________.

A.violence is more likely to occur at lunchtime

B.a small conflict can lead to violence

C.students tend to lose their temper easily

D.the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight

3.Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5?

A.To find out who is to blame.

B.To get ready to try new things.

C.To make clear what the real issue is.

D.To figure out how to stop the shouting match.

4.After the conflict resolution program was started in Atlanta, it was found that ________.

A.there was a decrease in classroom violence

B.there was less student cooperation in the classroom

C.more teachers felt better about themselves in schools

D.the teacher-student relationship greatly improved

5.The writer's purpose for writing this article is to ________.

A.complain about problems in school education

B.teach students different strategies for school life

C.advocate teaching conflict management in schools

D.inform teachers of the latest studies on school violence

IV. Reading(30)

A

Mathematical ability and musical ability may not seem on the surface to be connected, but people who have researched the subject -- and studied the brain—say that they are. Three quarters of the bright but speech-delayed children in the group I studied had a close relative who was an engineer, mathematician or scientist, and four fifths had a close relative who played a musical instrument. The children themselves usually took readily to math and other analytical subjects and to music.

Black, white and Asian children in this group show the same patterns. However, it is clear that blacks have been greatly overrepresented in the development of American popular music and greatly underrepresented in such fields as mathematics, science and engineering.

If the abilities required in analytical fields and in music are so closely related, how can there be this great discrepancy? One reason is that the development of mathematical and other such abilities requires years of formal schooling, while certain musical talents can be developed with little or no formal training, as has happened with a number of well-known black musicians.

It is precisely in those kinds of music where one can acquire great skill without formal training that blacks have excelled popular music rather than classical music, piano rather than violin, blues rather than opera. This is readily understandable, given that most blacks, for most of American history, have not had either the money or the leisure for long years of formal study in music.

Blacks have not merely held their own in American popular music. They have played a large role in the development of jazz, both traditional and modern. A long string of names comes to mind—W.C. Handy, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker…and so on.

None of this presupposes(假設,意味著) any special innate(先天的)ability of blacks in music. On the contrary, it is perfectly consistent with blacks having no more such inborn ability than anyone else, but being limited to being able to express such ability in narrower channels than others who have had the money, the time and the formal education to spread out over a wider range of music, as well as into mathematics, science and engineering.

36. what is the main idea of the first paragraph?

A.    Mathematical ability and musical ability are connected.

B.    Mathematical ability has more to do with the brain than musical ability.

C.    More people are good at music than math.

D.    More research should be done into the relationship between mathematical ability and math ability.

37. The word “discrepancy” (Para. 3) most probably means ____.

A. difference  B. excellence  C. inborn ability     D. inability

(38. What can be inferred about opera?

A.    It requires formal training.

B.    It is often enjoyed by those with strong analytical ability.

C.    It is disliked by blacks.

D.    It is more difficult to learn than classical music.

39. Which of the following statements is true according to the last paragraph?

A.    Blacks have special innate ability in music.

B.    Unlike others, blacks do not have innate ability in music.

C.    Jazz is one of the narrow channels through which blacks express their ability in music.

D.    Those who have money and time choose mathematics over music.

40. which of the following questions does the passage mainly concern?

A.    Are musical ability and mathematical ability connected?

B.    Why have blacks been greatly over represented in the development of American popular misic?

C.    What kinds of music require formal training?

D.    What are the contributions made by black musicians?
