Time talks. It speaks more plainly (明白地) than words. Time communicates(交流)in many ways.

Consider the different parts of the day, for example. The time of the day when something is done can give a special meaning to the event. Factory managers in the United States fully realize the importance of an announcement made during the middle of the morning or afternoon that takes everyone away from his work.

In the United States . it is not customary(通常的,習慣的) to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving (刮臉) or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very urgent (緊急的) and requires immediate attention. It is the same with telephone calls made after 11:00 p. m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he probably thinks it is a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

The meanings of time differ in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstanding arises (出現) between people from cultures (文化) that treat time differently . In the United States, people tend (趨向于) to think of time as something fixed in nature, something from which one can not escape. As a rule, .Americans think of time as a road into the future, along which one progresses. The road has many sections (段) , which are to be kept separate… “one thing at a time” . Thus, an American may feel angry when he has made an appointment (約會) with someone and then finds a lot of other things happening at the same time.

Americans look ahead and are concerned(與……有關系) almost entirely with the future. The American idea of the future is limited, however. It is the foreseeable future and not the future of involving (牽連) many centuries. Since time has much different meanings in different cultures, communication is often difficult. We will understand each other a little better if we can keep this fact in mind.

(1) According to the passage, an announcement made during the day in a factory must be very important because ____.

[ ]

A.it interrupts the work of all employees

B.it is made by the manager

C.it makes everyone lose his job

D.it communicates in many ways

(2) In the United States, a phone call made after 11:00 p. m. is considered ________ in the view of the writer.

[ ]

A.as important as one made in the morning

B.impolite since it disturbs the receiver's sleep

C.to be a threat (恐嚇) to the receiver's life

D.even more urgent than one made early in the morning.

(3) An .American may feel angry if ________.

[ ]

A.he is to deal with many things at one appointed time

B.people from different cultures misunderstand him

C.he cannot escape from something fixed in nature

D.others do not keep things separate

(4) The expression “the foreseeable future” could be most suitably replaced by ________.

[ ]

A.the future that will not be far away

B.the future that one looks forward to

C.the future toward which one makes progress

D.the future which involves centuries

(5) The writer concludes that people of different countries will understand each other better if ________ .

[ ]

A.they know how to communicate with each other

B.they are concerned with the future

C.they learn the way time communicates

D.they keep in mind that different cultures treat time differently

Mrs Matthews lived in a small town where there was one jeweller's shop. It also took in watch repairs, although it had to send them off to London for the work to be done, as there was not enough business to keep an expert watch repairer occupied.

When Mrs Matthews's old father died, she inherited his gold watch, which had belonged to his father and grandfather before him. It was big and heavy and worth a lot of money, but it was broken, so Mrs Matthews took it to be repaired.

The man in the jeweller's shop was very interested to see such an unusual watch, and when he had examined its insides, he said he could certainly have it repaired for her. “It'll last a long time once that's been done.”he said. He wrote out a ticket and gave it to Mrs Matthews saying. “Please bring this when you come to pick up the watch. But it might take a bit of time, because it isn't a modem watch.”

But Mrs Matthews had a lot of things to think about after her father died. She had to arrange to deal with the various affairs after her father's death.

The result was that she completely forgot about the watch that she had taken in for repair, and about the ticket for it, which she had put away in a drawer to keep it safe.

Then, while she was looking through some old drawers one day, she found the ticket for the watch repair.

She thought back, suddenly she remembered.“My father's gold watch! Didn't I pick it up? When did I take it in?”She looked at the ticket.

“How old's this ticket?” she said to herself. It was five years old.

Mrs Matthews had heard that shops could sell things that people had left with them if they didn't pick them up and pay for them before a certain time. “But the watch might still be there,”she thought.“I'll go and see if I can get it back. It might have been sold, but I hope not.”

She took the ticket to the jeweller's and the shopkeeper looked at it and then went to look for the watch without saying a word.

“That's good,”Mrs Matthews thought.“He didn't seem to mind about the date.”

The man came back after a few minutes and said,“It won't be ready until Friday.”

James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There, a school teacher asked the youth his name.

  “J.C.,”he replied.

She thought he had said “Jesse”, and he had a new name.

Owens ran his first race at age 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State University, He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second-year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935. he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.

A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book.

The stage was set for Owens' victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic(體育的) but also political. Hitler did not congratulate any of the African-American winners.

“It was all right with me,”he said years later. “I didn't go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway.”

Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone call from the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death.

Owens' Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles, and dogs.

“Sure, it bothered (煩憂) me,”he said later.“But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.”

In time, however, his gold medals (獎牌) changed his life.“They have kept me alive over the years,”he once said. “Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard.”

1.Owens got his other name “Jesse” when ________.

[ ]

A.he went to Ohio State University

B.his teacher made fun of him

D.he won gold medals in the Big Ten meet

2.In the Big Ten meet, Owens ________.

[ ]

A.hurt himself in the back

B.succeeded in setting many records

C.tried every sports event but failed

[ ]

A.he was not of the right race

B.he was the son of a poor farmer

C.he didn't shake hands with Hitler

D.he didn't talk to the US president on the phone

4.When Owens says “They have kept me alive over the years, ”he means that the medals ________.

[ ]

A.have been changed for money to help him live on

B.have made him famous in the US

C.have encouraged him to overcome difficulties in life

D.have kept him busy with all kinds of jobs

5.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

Right is right. Right? But is left wrong? Well, the Romans used to think so. They thought left-handed people were mistakes of nature. Latin, the language of the Romans, had many words that expressed this view (觀點) .Some words we use today still have this meaning. The Latin word“dexter”means“right”. The English word “odexterous”comes from this word. It means“handy”(clever with hands), so, right, is handy. But the Latin word for left is“sinistra”. The English word“sinister”comes from this word. Sinister means“evil”(very bad). Is it fair to call right-handed people handy and left-handed people evil? Well fair or not, many languages have words that express such beliefs. In old English, the word for left means“weak”. That isn't much of an improvement over“evil”.

Not very long ago, children were often forced to write with their right hands. Doctors have since found that this can be very harmful. You should use the hand you were born to use.

People who use their left hands are just starting to get better treatment. But why did they get all these bad names in the first place? One reason may be that there are not as many left-handed people as there are right handed people. There is one left-handed person for every five right-handed ones. People who are different are often thought to be wrong. But attitudes (態度) do seem to be changing. Fairminded right-handed people are finally starting to give left-handed people a hand.

(1) The passage leads us to believe that when one writes ________.

[ ]

A.he can use his right hand only

B.he can use his left hand only

C.he can use either his left hand or his right hand

D.he shouldn't use his left hand

(2) Which of the following is true to the passage?

[ ]

A.Odexterous comes from old English.

B.The Latin word for left is sinister.

C.The word for left in old English is a little better than that in Latin.

D.The word evil for left comes from Latin.

(3) Left-handed people today are ________.

[ ]

A.just as weak as left-handed people of the past

B.being treated better than those in the past

C.thought to be strange

D.being taught to use their right hands

(4) “Fair-minded right-handed people are finally starting to give left-handed people a hand”means that they are ________.

[ ]

A.persuading them

B.teaching them how to use their right hands

C.starting to give them a chance and help them out

D.shaking hands with them

(5) What's the main idea of the passage?

[ ]

A.Many languages have words that express the idea that left is bad.

B.Majorities often get good treatment.

C.Throughout the history, left-handed people have been treated poorly.

D.There are a lot of differences between left-handed people and right-handed people.

Kangaroos live only in Australia and on the island near it. Not many people knew they were there until about 200 yeas ago. At that time, Captain Cook sailed to Australia from England.

He and his men had travelled halfway around the world. They needed food for the long trip home. Captain Cook sent a few sailors ashore to get food .

When the sailor returned, they brought with them a big gray animal. The men's eyes were being opened wide.

“Look at his tail,”said one, “It must be four feet long!”

“What's the animal called?” asked the captain.

“We tried to get the people to tell us,” answered a sailor, “They kept saying ‘Kangaroo’. They wouldn't say anything else.”

“Kangaroo,” said Captain Cook, “That's a good name. It sounds as queer as he Cooks . ” Captain cook carefully noted this word in his word book.

The missionaries (傳教士) who later came to Australia were anxious to see a kangaroo but their questions were met with puzzled looks.
