For any person who must speak in public, to business or pleasure groups, humor is a helpful, and necessary, tool for getting your message across. Why does humor work a lot? There are several reasons.

People will enjoy what you have to say if it is presented with humor. But, more importantly, if you are in a situation where important, and perhaps controversial(有爭議的), ideas must be presented to less than open minds, humor allows those ideas to be presented in a non-threatening (無威脅的) manner. Abraham Lincoln was famous for his ability to relate humorous stories to make a point. Humor used carefully throughout a presentation will also keep the listener’s interest high. In a word, individuals learning how to use humor in their speeches can strengthen arguments, support interesting presentations and, most of all, entertain their audience in a positive and comfortable way.

While popular culture may well hold many kinds of humor, some of it has no place in presentations that are designed to educate and encourage the audience. If you want to become a professional stand-up (單人表演的) comedian whose goal is 100% entertainment, then you may be able to use some of the reference materials like The Art of Using Humor in Public Speaking. They can help you develop your skills and sources of humor. To that end, your participation in this study of humor will become necessary. Hopefully, you will come to appreciate the special difficulty of entertaining the audience with good and clean humor.

Most of us seem to reach our peak of alertness (警覺) around noon. Soon after that, alertness declines, and sleepiness may set in by mid-afternoon.
Your short-term memory is best during the morning—in fact, about 15 percent more efficient than at any other time of day. So, students, take notice: when you are faced with a morning exam, it really does pay to review your notes right before the test is given.
However, long-term memory is different. Afternoon is the best time for learning materials that you want to recall days, weeks or months later. Politicians, business executives or others who must learn speeches would be smart to do their memorizing during that time of day. You should try to do most of your studying in the afternoon, rather than late at night. Many students believe they memorize better while burning the midnight oil because their short-term recall is better during the early hours of the morning than in the afternoon. But short-term memory won’t help them much several days later, when they face the exam.
By contrast, we tend to do best on tasks related to the process of knowing, understanding, and learning numbers during the morning hours.
What about sports? During afternoon and early evening, you’re able to react the quickest to an outside stimulus—like a baseball speeding toward you. Studies have also shown that late in the day, when your body temperature is peaking, you will consider PE easier and less tiring—whether it actually is or not. That means you are more likely to work harder during a late afternoon or early evening workout, and therefore benefit more from it.
In fact, all of your senses—taste, sight, hearing, touch and smell—may be at their keenest during late afternoon and early evening. That could be why dinner usually tastes better to us than breakfast.
While all of us follow the same general pattern of ups and downs, the exact timing varies from person to person. It all depends on how your “biological” day is structured. Each of us can increase our knowledge about our individual rhythms. Learn how to listen to the inner beats of your body; let them set the pace of your day. You will live a healthier and happier life.

閱讀理解。
When I was in my fourth year of teaching, I was also (and am still) a high school track and field coach
(田徑教練). One year, I had a student, John, who entered my class when he was a junior (三年級學生).
John changed to our school from Greece, and seemed to be interested in sports, so I encouraged him to join
our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before, I did believe that he
could do well in any event, and I would be willing to coach him at whichever ones interested him. He accepted
the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.
About a month later, I had found out from other sources that John was a first-class tennis player, winning
various junior awards in his home country. I went to him asking, "John, I really appreciate that you came out
for the track team, but why didn't you play tennis instead? It seems that would interest you a lot more, since
you're so good at it."
John answered, "Well, I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me, and that you thought I could
do well in track, so I wanted to try it for that reason."
From then on, I often remember my student's reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down
to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical (不滿的) students can be of them-selves,
I've found that a simple "I trust that you can do it!" can go a long way!
1. According to Paragraph 1, the author seems to think more about John's _____.
[     ]
A. PE marks
B. self-confidence
C. interest in sports
D. state of health
2. Why did John take part in the track team?
[     ]
A. He had been an excellent runner.
B. He was encouraged by his teacher.
C. He liked running more than tennis.
D. He had no tennis coach to train him.
3. The purpose of this passage is probably _____.
[     ]
A. to build a close teacher-student relationship
B. to introduce a new way of sports training
C. to explain the value of sports and games
D. to show the importance of encouragement
4. The passage is mainly written for _____.
[     ]
A. teachers
B. parents
C. students
D. players
