In the United States, train transportation is unpopular compared with cars and airplanes. Most
people like traveling by car or by air.
Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001. The study is
about how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They only studied
trips longer than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all miles were traveled in
personal vehicle. Forty-one percent were traveled in an airplane. Two percent were traveled in a
bus. And less than one percent of miles were traveled in a train.
Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten years,
the number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent. Although the number of passengers
has increased,it is still very small now. In countries such as France,Germany,or Japan, more people
use trains.
There are several reasons why many people __________________________.
Firstly,Americans love to drive their own cars. On highways, cars can travel as fast as trains.
These highways connect all major cities in America. Secondly, many travelers like to be independent.
When they use their own cars they can decide when to travel. Thirdly, many buses travel between
major cities. Bus travel is less costly than train travel.
In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some cases, trave
l from one city to another by train may take more than a day. Airplanes can carry passengers over
long distances much faster. People who do not want to spend long time traveling by train decide to
fly. For these people saving time is the most important thing

T-shirts out; uniforms in School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A..That's no surprise, because they offer many benefits.

They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling(標記)that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the“wrong”clothes.

Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule-wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.

As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol(象征)of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets.People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.

Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children's“creativity”.First, as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality(個性).They just copy their classmates.Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they're in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths; this would take up all the creativity they have.Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.

(1)

In Paragraph 1, the word“benefits”probably means ________.

[ ]

A.

tasks

B.

messages

C.

differences

D.

advantages

(2)

From the passage we learn that uniforms in general ________.

[ ]

A.

prevent the wearers from being laughed at

B.

help the wearers keep their duties in mind

C.

are seen as a symbol of power

D.

help to create social barriers

(3)

Some people are against school uniforms because ________.

[ ]

A.

they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms

B.

they believe that uniforms will make students less creative

C.

they don't agree that uniforms can remove social barriers

D.

they think that school uniforms are too popular

Machines in the home have a short history. Sewing machines, washing machines and tumble dries are
common enough today, but a hundred years ago few people could even imagine such things. However,
inventors have designed and built a wide range of household machines since then. In most cases the
inventor tried to patent(申請專利)his machine, to stop anyone copying it. Then he tried to produce a lot
of them. If the machine became popular, the inventor could make a lot of money.
In 1790 the first sewing machine was patented. The inventor was an Englishman called Thomas Saint.
There was nothing to match his machine for forty years, and then someone built a similar device. He was a Frenchman, Bartelemy Thimonier. Neither of these early machines worked very well, however. It wasn't
until 1846 that an inventor came up with a really efficient sewing machine. He was an American, Elias
Howe and his machine was good enough to beat five skilled sewing women. He didn't make much money
from it, however. The first commercially successful sewing machine was patented by Isaac Singer five
years later.
Today, we take washing machines for granted, but there was none before 1869. The revolving drum(旋轉桶)of that first machine set a pattern for the future, but it was crude by today's standards. The drum was turned by hand, and needed a lot of effort. Eight years passed before someone produced an electric
washing machine. The world had to wait even longer for a machine to dry clothes. The first spin-drier was another American invention, patented in 1924; but it was 20 years before such machines were widely
used.
It was yet another American, called Bissell, who introduced the carpet sweeper. He patented the
original machine back in 1876. It didn't pick up dirt very well, but it was quicker than a dustpan and brush. Thirty-six years later, even the carpet sweeper was old-fashioned: modern homes now have a vacuum
cleaner with an electric motor to suck the dust.
1. Inventors patent the inventions so as to __________ .
A. produce more machines
B. avoid being copied by others
C. make the inventions more popular
D. make more money
2. Whose sewing machine could do far more than the work that was done by five skilled sewing women?
A. Thomas Saint's.
B. Bartelemy Thimonier's.
C. Elias Howe's.
D. Isaac Singer's.
3. According to the article, modern inventors __________.
A. followed the pattern of the first revolving drum but improve it much
B. only imitated the first washing machine
C. powered the first ever-made washing machine by electricity
D. had to wait for the first spin-drier for a long time
4. The underlined word "crude" in the sentence "but it was crude by today's standards." probably means
__________.
A. useless
B. ugly-looking
C. rough
D. not skillfully made
5. The article mainly tells us about __________.
A. the great inventors in the world
B. the important inventions in the world
C. the short history of household machines
D. the importance of the machines used in the home

Don't talk to me; I'm busy with my iPhone
Riding a London subway, a person from China will notice one major difference: in London, people do
not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That's not rudeness-people are just too busy to bother looking.
Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they're certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet reflection,
nor are they reading a book. New technology has replaced quiet habits. Today the only acceptable form
of book on the London underground is an e-book.
Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters (乘車上下班的人). Since the launch of the
iPhone in 2007, over 40,000-yes, that's 40,000-"apps" (programs downloaded for the iPhone) have
been designed.
Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillers. One "app", called iShoot, is a game
that features tanks. Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to
the exit of their destination. ISteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You
can then write in the " steam" on your phone screen.
For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be another choice. It's not just
teenagers who "plug in" to their music-iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.
And if games,  e-books and music aren't enough to keep you occupied. Then perhaps you would
prefer a film. The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite
TV show or film on the way to work. With all this entertainments, it's amazing that people still remember
to get off the train.
1. People in London do not make eye contact on the subway because they are busy___.
A. going to work
B. reading books
C. thinking private things
D. playing games, reading e-books, listening to music or watching films.
2. Those who like war games can download ___to their iPhones.
A. iShoot
B. Tube Exits
C. ISteam
D. iPod
3.The underlined word "occupied" in the last paragraph probably means____.
A. delighted
B. busy
C. amused
D. controlled
4.The article tells us that___.
A. London commuters are unfriendly to strangers
B. Apple has earned a lo of money from selling 40,000 iPhones
C. technology is changing the way London commuters spend their traveling time.
D. with all the new time-fillers, London commuters often forget to get off the train.
