Just seven years ago, the Jarvik-7 artificial heart was being cheered as the model of human creativeness. The sight of Barney Clark-alive and conscious after trading his diseased heart for a metal-and-plastic pump-convinced the press, the public and many doctors that the future had arrived. It hadn't.After monitoring production of the Jarvik-7, and reviewing its effects on the 150 or so patients(most of whom got the device as a temporary measure)the U.S.Food and Drug Administration concluded that the machine was doing more to endanger lives than to save them.Last week the agency cancelled its earlier approval, effectively banning(禁止)the device.

The recall may hurt Symbion Inc., maker of the Jarvik-7, but it won't end the request for an artificial heart. One problem with the banned mode is that the tubes connecting it to an external power source created a passage for infection.Inventors are now working on new devices that would be fully placed, along with a tiny power pack, in the patient's chest. The first sample products aren't expected for another 10 or 20 years. But some people are already worrying that they'll work-and that America's overextended health-care programs will lose a precious $2.5 billion to $5 billion a year providing them for a relatively few dying patients. If such expenditures(開(kāi)支)cut into funding for more basic care, the net effect could actually be a decline in the nation's health.

I began working in journalism when I was eight. It was my mother’s idea. She wanted me to“make something”of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition.

With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST.When it was supper time, I walked back home.

“How many did you sell, my boy?”my mother asked.

  “None.”

  “Where did you go?”

“The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”

  “What did you do?”

“Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”

  “You just stood there?”

  “Didn’t sell a single one.”

  “My God, Russell!”

Uncle Allen put in,“Well, I’ve decided to take the Post.”I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分鎳幣).It was the first nickle I earned.

Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman.I would have to ring doorbells, address adults with self-confidence, and persuade them by saying that no one, no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home.

One day, I told my mother I’d changed my mind.I didn’t want to make a success in the magazine business.

“If you think you can change your mind like this,”she replied,“you’ll become a good-for-nothing.”She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines.Whenever I said no, she would scold me.

My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father’s plain workman’s life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love.

The weather is getting hotter. You are thirsty playing basketball or riding home from school.A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you are drinking.Something that looks cool may not be good for your health. There are plenty of “energy drinks” on the market. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. The lists on them tell you they are helpful to your health.Sounds great!

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling.Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need.We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005.It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK.In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect.Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place.Food waste is a serious problem, too.Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us.We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But is also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope.As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realise just how much unnecessary material are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

(1)

What does the underlined phrase “over-consumption” refer to?

[ ]

A.

Using too much packaging.

B.

Recycling too many wastes.

C.

Making more products than necessary.

D.

Having more material than is needed.

(2)

The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show ________.

[ ]

A.

the tendency of cutting household waste

B.

the increase of packaging recycling

C.

the rapid growth of super markets

D.

the fact of packaging overuse

(3)

According to the text, recycling ________.

[ ]

A.

helps control the greenhouse effect

B.

means burning packaging for energy

C.

is the solution to gas shortage

D.

leads to a waste of land

(4)

What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

[ ]

A.

Unpackaged products are of bad quality.

B.

Supermarkets care more about packaging.

C.

It is improper to judge quality by packaging.

D.

Other products are better packaged than food.

(5)

What can we learn from the last paragraph?

[ ]

A.

Fighting wastefulness is difficult.

B.

Needless material is mostly recycled.

C.

People like collecting recyclable waste.

D.

The author is proud of their consumer culture.

Rae Armantrout, who has been a poetry professor at the University of California San Diego(UCSD)for two decades, has won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in the poetry category for her most recent book, “Versed”.

“I’m delighted and amazed at how much media recognition that the Pulitzer brings, as compared to even the National Book Critics Award, which I was also surprised and delighted to win,” said Armantrout.

“For a long time, my writing has been just below the media radar, and to have this kind of attention, suddenly, with my 10th book, is really surprising.”

Armantrout, a native Californian, received her bachelor’s degree at UC Berkeley, where she studied with noted poet Denise Levertov, and her master’s in creative writing from San Francisco State University. She is a founding member of Language Poets, a group in American poetry that analyzes the way language is used and raises questions to make the reader think.

In March, she won the National Book Critics Circle Award for “Versed.”

“This book has gotten more attention,” Armantrout said, “but I don’t feel as if it’s better.”

The first half of “Versed” focuses on the dark forces taking hold of the United States as it fought the war against Iraq. The second half looks at the dark forces casting a shadow over her own life after Armantrout was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.

Armantrout was shocked to learn she had won the Pulitzer but many of her colleagues were not.“Rae Armantrout is a unique voice in American poetry,” said Seth Lerer, head of Arts and Humanities at UCSD.
