Some students get so nervous before a test; they do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock has studied these highly anxious test-takers.
Sian Beilock: “They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when we worry,it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about it as your cognitive horsepower that you could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.”
Professor Beilock and another researcher,Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
Sian Beilock: “What we think happens is when students put it down on paper, they think about the worst that could happen and they reappraise the situation. They might realize it’s not as bad as they might think it was before and,in essence(本質上),it prevents these thoughts from popping up when they’re actually taking a test.”
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of twelve percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent.
Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.
Prefessor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of  B+,compared to a B- for those who did not.
Sian Beilock: “What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious,who’d done our writing intervention(排解),all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most likely to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these testing situations.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
小題1:Which of the following is TRUE?
A.The result in the math test agrees with that in the biology test.
B.In the first math test, students who sat quietly performed better.
C.In the second math test, students who wrote about their feelings did worse.
D.Some college students are highly anxious test-takers while others are not in the tests.
小題2:What may happen if students have the problem of test anxiety?
A.Test anxiety is sure to cause students to fail the test.
B.Test anxiety can improve students’ performance to some degree.
C.Students’ attention and memory resources run out when worried.
D.Students may not be admitted into their favorite college if worried
小題3:The result of the research suggests that ________.
A.proper amount of burden may turn out to be a good thing
B.facing the fears bravely may help one to achieve more
C.avoiding facing the problem may contribute to relaxation
D.taking no action before difficulty may result in success
小題4:What is the main idea of the passage?
A.It is important for students to overcome test anxiety.
B.Anxious students overcome test anxiety by writing down fears.
C.It is a common practice for students being worried before a test.
D.Being worried before tests does harm to students’ performance.

小題1:A

Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of twelve percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent.可知,第二場考試中,寫了感受的學生表現的更好。故C錯誤。D選項文章并未提到當別的學生沒在考試時,一些學生會變得焦慮。故D錯誤,由Prefessor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.
由第二段的句子:when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources.

Having just quit a highly moneymaking job with tech giant Microsoft in the United States, where he’d made millions working as a program manager,Patrick Awuah would wake up once in a while wondering if he’d done the right thing.
What Awuah wanted was to create a university in his native Ghana.a state-of-the-art education centre that would help educate the country’s next generation of leaders.Awuah moved with his family back to Ghana. There,he invested his own money and with the help of other donors he founded Ashesi University.
“Africa needs to have a renaissance(復興),” says Awuah as he explained what drove him to take the risky decision.“The world needs to change in this way and I strongly believe that people like me need to be part of the solution;I need to be really actively involved in helping to drive this change in Africa‘‘

Every electronic gadget (小玩意) needs good memory. A music player stores songs, albums and playlists. A computer holds schoolwork and programs and remembers how far a player has advanced in his or her favorite game. Mobile phones store names, numbers and hundreds of texts.
Now, scientists in California say they have come up with a way to turn a living cell into a memory device.
It can store only one tiny bit of information, but it’s a start. In the future, a cell-based gadget might travel through the body and record measurements. The benefit to human health could be big: the right tool, for example, might record the earliest signs of disease.
Doctors, scientists and other curious people want to know what is happening inside the body, even at levels that can’t be seen by the naked eye. So far, there is no device small enough to travel through the bloodstream.
If normal machines won’t do the trick, perhaps biology will. Scientists who work in the field of synthetic (合成的) biology are trying to find ways to turn living things into human tools. In the case of the new memory device, bioengineers from Stanford University used the genetic material inside living cells to record information.
This genetic material consists of DNA. Found in nearly every cell, DNA carries all of the information that keeps a living thing alive.
In the new experiment, the researchers turned DNA from bacteria(細菌) into a switch. They “flip (翻轉)” a small section of DNA. Then, using the same procedure (過程) , the scientists flip the section again—returning it into its normal structure.
Using these DNA switches, “We can write and erase DNA in a living cell,” bioengineer, Jerome Bonnet, explained to Science News.
It might take years before his team or others identity whether a DNA-based memory device might be practical. Right now, it takes one hour to complete a flip. That is far too long to be useful. Plus, a flipped section has a very small little memory—less than what a computer uses to remember a single letter.
“This was an important proof that it was doable,” Bonnet told Science News. “Now we want to build a more complex system, something that other people can use.”
小題1:What is the aim of listing the electronic things in the first paragraph?
A.To make the passage more fashionable.
B.To show how electronic things have memory.
C.To discuss things in detail.
D.To make the subject of the text more understandable.
小題2:What is possible future benefit of the cell-based gadget for people?
A.To detect disease at the earliest point.
B.To help improve the memory.
C.To help people build a body.
D.To replace many electronic gadgets.
小題3:What is the object being researched?
A. The cells of bacteria.
B. The DNA of bacteria.
C. A section of bacteria.
C. The nucleus of bacteria.
小題4:What do we know about a flipped section of DNA?
A.It has a very small memory.
B.It can function as a computer.
C.It has one letter in it.
D.It takes a day to complete it.

It is known to us that computer users are being warned by industry experts to pay attention to secret codes which could be used to record their conversation.
E-mails, screen savers, and electronic greeting cards can carry a secret code which is able to turn on the computer’s microphone, make a recording, and forward it to someone else without the user’s knowledge.
In fact any attachments (附件) sent to a computer, whether it is a game of Space Invaders, or a moving picture, can possibly be used to spy (窺探).
Experts say people should always think twice about opening attachments because --- although not common --- bugging (竊聽) by computer can and has been done.
Bill Lyons, head of the Internet Security Company Finjan, said, “People in the army have tested this and you can be sure, if people in general are aware of it, then computer hackers (黑客) are aware of it. The frightening thing is that there are tools on the Internet which people, using a simple search method, can find, and which will enable them to attach this dangerous code to simple attachments.”
小題1:What is the advice given in the passage?
A.Use secret codes to record other people’s conversation.
B.Be careful when opening an attachment.
C.Never open any attachments.
D.Never use secret codes.
小題2:What worries the experts is that ___ .
A.nobody seems to believe such things
B.nobody knows the danger of the code
C.tools can easily be used to tie dangerous codes to e-mails
D.effective ways can never be found to deal with the problem.
小題3:Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.A moving picture cannot be used to spy.
B.Electronic greeting cards cannot carry a secret code.
C.A secret code is used to destroy the computer system.
D.Any attachments sent to a computer may carry a secret code.

Thoughts claim our attention continuously, and waste our time and energy on unimportant and useless matters. They actually rule our life. We have become so used to this slavery, that we take it for granted, and have become unconscious of this habit, except on certain occasions.
While breathing, we do not need to pay attention to each inhalation and exhalation. We become conscious of the process of breathing only when we have some difficulty with breathing, such as when our nose is blocked, due to a cold, or when we are in an unventilated(不通風的) room.
It is the same with thinking. We become conscious of the constant onslaught of our thoughts, and of our inability to calm them down, only when we need to concentrate, solve a problem or study. We are also aware of them when we have worries or fears.
Look at the following familiar situation. You need to study something for an exam. You sit comfortably on the sofa with the book in your hands and start reading. After a while you feel hungry and go to the kitchen to eat something.
You return to read, and then hear your people talking outside. You listen to them for several moments and then bring your attention back to the book.
After a while you feel restless and switch on the radio to listen to some music. You continue to read for a little while, and then remember something that happened yesterday, and you start thinking about it.
When you look at your watch, you are amazed to find out that one complete hour has passed and you have hardly read anything. And at this time, you feel you’re thinking.
This is what happens when one lacks concentration. Imagine what you could have accomplished if you could control your attention and focus your mind!
小題1:When can you feel you are thinking?
A.While breathing.B.While not reading.
C.When you need to concentrate.D.When you waste your time.
小題2:Why does the author put forward the exam situation?
A.To explain the course of thinking awareness.
B.To show how to get ready for an exam.
C.To present an example of concentration.
D.To emphasize the importance of reading.
小題3:Where can you most probably find the above passage?
A.In a guidebook of natural science.
B.In the front page of a newspaper.
C.In an advertisement part of a magazine.
D.In the section of psychology of a magazine.
小題4:This passage is mainly about _______.
A.the relationship between thoughts and breathing
B.how people’s thought and mind work
C.what happens when one wants to think
D.the ways to increase your thought

About 35 percent of British adults sleep with teddy bears. Many more share a bed with a partner or spouse. Others still co - sleep, alongside children in a family bed.
But lying with your iPad? A recent survey by marketing agency Rosette found that 68 percent of tablet owners use the device in the bedroom, more than in any other location. The living room took a close second place, at 63 percent, reports AdAge. com, and only 45 percent of respondents said they use their tablets on the go.
But bringing devices into the bedroom is a bad idea, if quality rest is your goal. One of the most important factors of sleepiness is darkness, which signals to the brain that it’s time to start speeding up production of the sleep - inducing hormone melatonin. But as the New York Times points out, in our modern world, we are exposed to light long after the sun sets. While any type of light can disturb your sleep, the blue wavelength light given off by cell phones, laptops, tablets and other gadgets is particularly troublesome. Research shows that this blue light causes alertness so decisively that it can actually be used to fight tiredness.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, 95 percent of Americans use some device, whether it’s a TV, laptop, cell phone or other products, within an hour of killing time. “Artificial light exposure between dusk and the time we go to bed at night push our sleeping sense to a later hour - making it more difficult to fall asleep,” said Charles Czeisler, Ph. D. , M. D. , chief of the division of sleep medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Instead, experts recommend turning off all devices an hour before bedtime and finding another method for relaxation, like reading a book, taking a warm bath or performing a series of calming yoga poses. It’s also a good idea to exercise and lay off the caffeine several hours before bedtime.
