Yang Yang was facing a dilemma: Should he attend Tsinghua University in Beijing or Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)?

As a top student in this year's college entrance examination, the 18-year-old from Guangdong received admission notices from both universities. He had been dreaming of studying at Tsinghua since childhood; HKUST, on the other hand, has merely 15 years of history.

  After several sleepless nights, he chose to go to Hong Kong, which is a “very painful” choice. In the end, “I admire the history and learning environment at Tsinghua, but I want to experience a more Westernized teaching and learning system in Hong Kong,” he said with a timid smile.

  But Li Xiaolu, a female student who attended HKUST’s interview, said even if she was granted a full scholarship she would not go to Hong Kong.

  “I don't fit in there,” she said, adding that she was quite introverted and felt mainland universities are better for basic science studies.

  She refuted some scholars' claims that Beijing University and Tsinghua have degenerated into second-rate schools. “They are always the dream for millions of Chinese high school graduates,” she said.

Dear Mum and Dad

      I learned from the news that top student Yang Yang decided to attend HKUST after being admitted

by both HKUST and Tsinghua University while another outstanding student Li Xiaolu preferred to study

in the besf mainland universities.

      Now I am facing a dilemma like Yang Yang to choose between universities in Hong Kong and mainland China. I am more than grateful when I know you will support me financially if I choose to study in the university in Hong Kong. But after a painful struggle, I still prefer to study in the best university of mainland China, Peking University. I have my reasons.

      To study in Peking University, a prestigious university in China has long been my dream. For one thing, the academic atmosphere as well as rich traditional Chinese culture in Beijing will be more beneficial for me to study Chinese literature. For another, Peking University distinguishes itself for her many internationally famous professors on Chinese literature. And as a cradle for modern Chinese literature, Peking University will definitely offer me the best undergraduate education I am pursuing.

      So dear Mum and Dad, could you please just respect my choice and support me? I am sure I will have a colorful study life in Peking University and then a promising future.
