An amazing teacher

Years ago a John Hopkins professor gave a group of graduate students this task: Go to the slums(貧民窟). Took 200 boys, between the ages of 12 and 16, and 31  their background and environment, then 32  their chances for the future.

The students, after consulting social statistics, talking to the boys, and collecting much data, concluded that 90 percent of the boys would 33  some time in prison.

Twenty-five years later 34  group of graduate students was given the job of 35  the prediction. They went back to the same area. Some of the boys---by then 36 ---were still there, a few had died, some had moved away, but they got in touch with 180 of the 37 200.They found that only four of the group had ever been sent to 38 .

Why was it that these men, who had lived in a breeding place of crime, had such a surprisingly good record? The researchers were 39  told,“Well, there was a teacher…”

They pressed(追問)further, and found that in 75 percent of the cases it was the same woman. The researchers went to this teacher, now living in a home for retired teachers. How had she had this brilliant 40  on that group of children? Could she give them any reason why these boys should have remembered her?

“No,” she said,“No,I really couldn’t.”And then, thinking back 41  the years, she said musingly(沉思地),42  to herself than to her questioners,“Iloved those boys…”

Hummingbirds have got their name from the distinct “hum” sound made by their rapidly flapping (拍打) wings. The size of the bird decides the number of flaps it can do.The average lifetime of a hummingbird is 3 or 4 years, but some of them have lived beyond 12 years also. They are unique in many ways.Besides the number of rapid flaps they can do per second, they can also fly backwards.

Hummingbirds have an amazing sense of assessing the amount of sugar in the nectar (花蜜) they eat. They feed on the nectar of flowers.Hummingbirds do not feed on flowers whose nectar contains less than 10% sugar.Talk about a sweet tooth! As they cannot sustain themselves on nectar alone because of its poor nutritional value, they also feed on insects and spiders, and hummingbird food mixture that one can make at home.

Attracting hummingbirds to your garden will require a little planning.Plant butterfly bush, mimosa, coral bells, foxglove, morning glory, etc. These flowers attract the hummingbirds due to their high visibility (可見性) and nectar production.Avoid using pesticides (殺蟲劑), as it will not only kill the insects around the flowers, but hurt the hummingbirds as well.

A common food for these birds is the sweettasting sugar syrup (糖漿).Hummingbird food ingredients are just two: sugar and water.Take a large clean bowl, pour in it four cups of hot water, and dissolve one cup of table sugar in it.Stir slowly until all sugar has dissolved.

Hummingbirds, tiny as they are, collect a lot of nutrition.Providing them with hummingbird food mixture made of sugar water is a sure way to get all these beauties humming in your garden.

Botany, the study of plants, occupies a special position in the history of human knowledge. For many thousands of years it was the one field of awareness about which humans had anything more than the vaguest (含糊的) of insight. It is impossible to know today just what our Stone Age ancestors knew about plants, but from what we can observe of pre-industrial societies that still exist, a detailed learning of plants and their properties must extremely ancient. This is logical. Plants are the basis of the food pyramid for all living things, even for other plants. They have always been enormously important to the welfare of peoples, not only for food, but also for clothing, weapons, tools, eyes, medicines, shelter, and a great many other purposes. Tribes living today in the jungles of the Amazon recognized accurately hundreds of plants and know many properties of each. To them, botany, as such, has no name and is probably not even recognized as a special branch of knowledge at all.

Unfortunately, the more industrialized we become the farther away we move from direct contact with plants, and the less distinct our knowledge of botany grows. Yet everyone comes unconsciously on an amazing amount of botanical knowledge, and few people will fail to recognize a rose, an apple, or an orchid. When our Neolithic ancestors, living in the Middle East about 10,000 years ago, discovered that certain grasses could be harvested and their seeds planted for richer productions the next season, the first great step in a new association of plants and humans was taken. Grains were discovered and from them flowed the wonder of agriculture; cultivated crops. From then on, humans would increasingly take their living from the controlled production of a few plants, rather than getting a little here and a little there from many varieties that grew wild and the built up knowledge of tens of thousands of years of experience and close relationship with plants in the wild would begin fade away.

1. Which of the following statements about early humans is expressed in the passage?

A. They probably had extensive knowledge of plants.

B. They thought there was no need to cultivate crops.

C. They did not enjoy the study of botany.

D. They placed great importance on the ownership of property.

2. What does the comment “This is logical.” In the first paragraph mean?

A. There is no clear way to determine the extent of our ancestor’s knowledge of plants.

B. It is not surprising that early humans had a detailed knowledge of plants.

C. It is reasonable to assume that our ancestors behaved very much like people in pre-industrial societies.

D. Human knowledge of plants is well organized and very detailed.

3. According to the passage, why has general knowledge of botany begun to fade?

A. People no longer value plants as a useful resource.

B. Botany is not recognized as a special branch of science.

C. Research is unable to keep up with the increasing numbers of plants.

D. Direct contact with a variety of plants has decreased.

4. In the second paragraph, what is the author’s purpose in mentioning “ a rose, an apple, or an orchid”?

A. To make the passage more poetic.

B. To give an example of plant that are attractive.

C. To give botanical examples that all readers will recognize.

D. To explain the variety of botanical life.

5. According to the passage, what was the first great step toward the practice of agriculture?

A. The invention of agricultural tools and machinery.

B. The development of a system of names for plants.

C. The discovery of grasses that could be harvested and replanted.

D. The changing diets of early humans.

In her ten years at Granite Falls, she has revitalized(復興) the music programs at both the

When I was quite young, I discovered that somewhere inside the telephone lived an amazing

person - "Information Please" and there was nothing she did not know.

One day while my mother was out, I hit my finger with a hammer. The pain was terrible, but

there was no one home to give me any sympathy. I walked around the house, finally arriving at the telephone! Quickly, I called “Information Please" and told her what happened.  She told me to open the icebox and hold a little piece of ice to my finger.

After that, I called "Information Please" for everything. When my pet bird died, I told

"Information Please" the sad story. She tried to comfort me, she said quietly, "Paul, always remember that there are other worlds to sing in." Somehow I felt better. Another day I was on the telephone, “How do you spell ‘grateful’? ". All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. When I was 9, we moved to Boston.

A few years later, on my way to college, my plane put down in Seattle. I had about half an

Three months later I was back in Seattle. A different voice answered me. I was told that Sally

passed away five weeks before.

Before I could hang up she told me that Sally left a message for me—“Tell him I still say

there are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean.”  I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant.
