Are you happy? Do you remember a time when you were happy? Are you seeking happiness today?
Many have sought a variety of sources for their feelings of happiness. Some have put their heart and efforts into their work.Too many have turned to drugs and alcohol.Meanwhile, untold numbers have looked for it in the possession of expensive cars, exotic(異國的)vacation homes and other popular “toys”. Most of their efforts have a root in one common fact: people are looking for a lasting source of happiness.
Unfortunately, I believe that happiness escapes from many people because they misunderstand the journey of finding it. I have heard many people say that, “I’ll be happy when I get my new promotion,” or “I’ll be happy when I lose that extra 20 pounds.” It is dangerous because it accepts that happiness is a “response” to having, being or doing something.
In life, we all experience stimulus(激勵) and response.Today, some people think that an expensive car is stimulus.Happiness is a response.A great paying job is stimulus.Happiness is a response.A loving relationship is stimulus.Happiness is a response. This belief leaves us thinking and feeling:“I’ll be happy when…”
It has been my finding that actually the opposite is true.I believe that happiness is a stimulus and response is what life brings to those who are truly happy. When we are happy, we tend to have more success in our work. When we are happy, people want to be around us and enjoy loving relationships. When we are happy, we more naturally take better care of our bodies and enjoy good health.Happiness is not a response but a stimulus.
Happiness is a conscious choice we make every day of our lives. For unknown reason to me, many choose to be painful, unsuccessful and angry most of the time.Happiness is not something that happens to us after we get something we want—we usually get things we want AFTER we choose to be happy.
61.From the second paragraph, we know too many people           .
A.are not happy when they work hard
B.are not happy when they drink or take drugs
C.are happy when they possess their own expensive cars
D.all desire exotic vacation homes
62.Generally speaking, most people feel happy because          .
A.they think happiness is rooted in their deep heats
B.they get what they want to have
C.they get a great paying job
D.they get an expensive car
63.Which f the following is right according to the author?
A.If you want to get what you want, you first choose to be happy.
B.We should try to get more and then we’ll be happy.
C.Most people today are happy.
D.Work is a necessary part in our daily life.
64.From the viewpoint of the author, happiness is        .
A.based on our needs   B.unconditional
C.out of reach                 D.linited

Fatimah Bamun dropped out of Balizenda Primary School in the first grade, when her father refused to buy her pencils and paper. Only after her teachers said to him that his daughter showed unusual promise(有希望) did he change his mind. Today, Fatimah, 14, tall and slender, studies math in a dirt-floored fourth-grade classroom.
Whether she will reach the fifth grade is another matter. Fatimah is facing the realities of a school with no toilet, no water, no hope of privacy (隱私) other than the shadow of a bush, and no girlfriends with whom to share feelings. Fatimah is the only girl of the 23 students in her class. In fact, in a school of 178 students, she is one of the only three girls who have made it past the third grade.
“I have no friend in the class,” she said. “Most of my friends have dropped out to get married. So during the break, I just sit in the classroom and read.”
Her father, however, now says he is fully behind her. “The people from the government are all the time telling us to send our daughters to school, and I am listening to these people,” he said.
But in many cases, parents don’t listen. Parents think that if the girls stay home, they can help with the harvesting, fetch the water and collect the firewood. So they take them out of school.
In a region where poverty, tradition and ignorance make about 24 million girls not even have an elementary school education. There are many other barriers (障礙) that prevent girls going to school, such as the lack of school toilets and water.
The issue is not only equality. The World Bank thinks that if women in sub-Saharan Africa had equal education, land and other wealth, the region’s economy could improve greatly. There is a connection between growth in Africa and sex equality. It is of great importance but still ignored by so many people.
小題1:The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to _______.

A.Fatimah is a girl who shows signs of success for the future.

D.Fatimah has no friends at school because they most of them have dropped out to get married.
小題3:It can be inferred from the passage that _______.
A.most African girls are treated equally in society
B.African governments don’t care whether girls go to school or not

Soon my sisters and I became 45. Our "children" kept us 46 all day. We gave them a bath, 47 them, brushed their hair, took them out for a walk and put them to bed. A heart attack can happen to anyone. Let’s say it’s 5:20 pm and you’re driving home alone after an unusually hard day on the job. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly, you start experiencing terrible pains in your chest, and they spread to your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital which is nearest your home. Unfortunately, you don’t know if you’ll be able to make it that far. You’ve been trained in a CPR course, but the guy who teaches the course hasn’t told you how to perform it on yourself. What can you do?
Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, this article seems to be quite useful. Without help, people whose hearts stop beating properly and who begin to feel faint (頭暈的) have only about 10 seconds left before they faint. However, they can help themselves by coughing over and over very loudly. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, coming from inside the chest. Deep breaths and coughing must be repeated about every two seconds without stopping until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze (擠壓) the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it beat normally. In this way, people who are suffering a heart attack can get to a phone and between breaths call for help.
Tell as many other people as possible about this, as it may save their lives!
64. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. The good thing about coughing.
B. How to help people survive a heart attack.

A. regain a person’s breath and heart beat
B. oneself to help survive a heart attack
C. teach people how to stay in good condition
D. train people how to stay calm when facing danger
66. According to the second paragraph, what’s the use of taking deep breaths during a heart attack?
A. It helps to squeeze the heart.
B. It helps to keep the blood circulating.
C. It helps to get oxygen into the lungs.
D. It helps to reduce the pains in the chest.
67. In which section of a newspaper could you read this passage?

When someone gives you advice, listen without judgment, try to find value in what you’re hearing, and say: “Thank you”. This wise advice is easy to understand yet hard to practice. I’ll give you an example from my life when I totally blew it in term of practicing what I teach.
In my work I travel constantly. I always put off going to the airport until the last second. My wife, Lyda, was sitting next to me in the front seat. I was racing along and not paying much attention. Lyda cried out: “Look out! There is a red light up ahead.”
Being a trained behavioral science professional—who teaches others the value of encouraging advice—I naturally screamed at her: “I know there is a red light up ahead! Don’t you think I can see?” When we arrived at the airport, Lyda didn’t speak to me. I wondered why she seemed mad at me.
During the flight to New York, I did a cost-benefit analysis. I asked myself: “What was the cost of just listening when Lyda called out the warning? Zero.” I then reasoned: “What was the potential benefit? What could have been saved?” Several potential benefits came to mind, including her life, my life, and the lives of other people.
I landed in New York feeling ashamed of myself. I immediately called Lyda and told her my cost-benefit story. I convinced her: “The next time you help me with my driving, I am just going to say, ‘Thank you!’”
A few months passed, and I had long forgotten the incident. Again, I was racing off to the airport, when Lyda cried out: “Look out for the red right!” I was embarrassed, and then shouted: “Thank you!”
I’m a long way from perfect, but I’m getting better. My suggestion is that you get in the habit of asking the important people in your life how you can do things better. And be ready for an answer. Some people may tell you things like “Look out for the red light.” When this happens, remember that there is possibly some potential benefit. Then just say: “Thank you.”
60.What do we know about the author?
A. He is expert at behavioral science.
B. He is gifted in cost-benefit analysis.
C. He seldom takes his wife’s advice.
D. He often runs the red traffic light.
61.The underlined part “blew it ” in Paragraph 1 probably means “_______”.
A. became annoyed with the adviser                B. forgot the practical method
C. failed to say “Thank you”                                D. lost personal judgment
62.It can be inferred from the passage that people _________.
A. tend to be defensive when given advice
B. intend to follow others’ suggestions
C. had better study behavioral science
D. should give their opinions patiently
63The purpose of the passage is to advise people to ________.
A. do a cost-benefit analysis in daily life
B. treasure others’ suggestions
C. learn from the author’s experiences
D. discover potential benefits

Manage your time well for each module(單元), but also make sure you get a good balance between work and social life. That is vital for life in general.
Set aside time specifically for each subject. Try to study one subject a day. You need to balance time. If you are bad at balancing things, make a personal timetable. Even if you do not stick to it, you will have an idea what you should be doing each day. This is better than trying to do everything each day and, at the end of the week, not achieve anything. Also, try to keep your weekends free of studying. Only study at the weekend if you really have to.
I had to learn to balance work, study and family when I was at college. I was a retail assistant working part-time and had at least four modules to complete at the same time at college. I also had to help around the house doing household cleaning and shopping at times. I managed to finish my college work on time, which was very difficult and hard, and still hold down a job.
Why was it possible? Because I only thought about my part-time work when I was at work on the weekends and my college work had to be done from Mondays to Fridays before the weekends. This was hard—but you need to set a timetable for yourself. It was an achievement when I finally realized that things have to be done in order, and need to be organized as well.
Balancing study and other aspects(方面) of your life can be a problem if you have a job or a family, but planning in advance is helpful. Use the time you have well. Do not leave anything until the last minute, as this will only cause problems.
55.The underlined word“vital”(in Paragraph 1) means_____________.
A.common                B.necessary                   C.easy                   D.difficult
56.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the advice the writer gives?
A.Try to study many subjects in a day.                   B.Try not to study on the weeekends.
C.Plan in advance.                                           D.Try to set a timetable.
57.It could be inferred from the passage that__________.
A.the writer has a part-time job as an assistant when he was at college
B.you need to set a timetable for yourself
C.you should make a personal timetable if you are bad at balancing your time
D.the writer can arrange his time well when he was at college
58.What is the passage mainly about?
A.I had a good time during my college.
B.How to study well at college.
C.Balance time between study and other aspects of your life.
D.How to plan your things in advance.

When we can see well, we do not think about our eyes often. It is only when we can not see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.
People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing and reading, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.
People who are farsighted face just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts.Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
When night falls, colors become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the side of your eyes rather than the centers.Sometimes, after dark, you see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly.Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they can not see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive in daylight, is not as sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark.
64.We don’t know that our eyes are of great importance until ________.
A.we think about our eyes     B.we cannot see clearly
C.we wear glasses             D.we have to do much reading
65.According to the passage, a ________ is more likely to be nearsighted.
A.student        B.doctor         C.guard          D.painter
66.People who are farsighted ________ .
A.can do a lot of close work without glasses
B.can only see things that are very close to their eyes
C.have difficulty reading a book if they hold it at arm’s length
D.can correct their eyes by glasses
67.To see a small thing at night, it is better to look ________ .
A.with wide open eyes       B.with half shut or narrowed eyes
C.straight at it                D.in a slightly different direction
