If you’re looking for a fairly painless way to lose weight, researchers at Brigham Young University have a new solution for you: Put yourself on a regular sleep schedule. People who keep a regular sleep routine have a lower body fat than those who keep irregular sleep hours, says a new study.

Led by Bruce Bailey, professor of exercise science, researchers followed 300 female college students aged 19 to 26, who were given activity trackers(跟蹤器)to watch their movements and activities, including waking and sleeping times . Researchers also measured their body composition (成分)before and after the one-week study period.

What the researchers found:

Body fat varied with sleep quantity. Women who slept between 8 and 8.5 hours a night had the lowest body fat. While those who slept less than 7 hours or over 9 hours had higher body fat.

High quality sleep was associated with lower body fat while poor sleep was connected with higher body fat.

Waking and going to sleep at the same time every day was most strongly linked with lower body fat.

The difference in body weight was greater with more variation(變化)in sleep pattern. Women whose sleep patterns varied by 90 minutes a night had higher body fat than those whose sleep patterns varied by 60 minutes or less on average.

The study followed up on a body of research conducted over the last few years that ties quality and quantity of sleep to weight loss and better weight control. While researchers don’t know exactly how sleep schedules affect body weight and fat, other studies have shown that sleep has an effect on physical activity, appetite(胃口), and the hormones(荷爾蒙)that control metabolism(新陳代謝), and the signals that tell us we’re full.

1.Which of the following about the study led by Bruce Bailey is true?

A. The participants included both females and males.

B. The participants’ activities were monitored through trackers.

C. The participants’ body composition were measured only after the study.

D. The study was controlled by researchers during a long period time.

2.Who may have the lowest body fat according to the study?

A. Women whose sleep patterns varied by 90 times a night.

B. Women whose sleep patterns varied by 60 times a night.

C. Women who sleep no more than 7 hours a night.

D. Women who get 8 to 8.5 hours of sleep a night.

3.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ______.

A. It’s the first research to study better weight control.

B. Many people know exactly how sleep affects body fat.

C. Sleep can affect people at least in three ways.

D. Sleep can give signals to tell people they are full.

4.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Several factors that affects the sleep quality.

B. Some ways to help you lose weight efficiently.

C. The importance of having a regular sleep routine.

D. A study on the relationship between sleep and body weight.

Dear Jeremy and Alice,

Although we’ve been delighted to have you as neighbors, we’re hoping to settle something that bothers to us. In a word, your dog --- Cleo.

We’ve called several time about Cleo’s early morning barking. It is difficult to understanding why she barks every minute she’s outside. The early morning barking have been disturbing as we are often up all night with the baby. Beside, Cleo tends to bark a average of six hours a day. This morning she starts barking even before 5 o’clock. That is too much for us, considering how closely our houses are.

We appreciate our apologies and goodwill, but we hope that you can figure a good way of settling the matter.

Sincerely,

How Can I Fight Laziness?

Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.

1.. Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.

Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive(主動的) approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. 2.

Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(誘惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. 3.Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.

Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. 4. Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.

5. Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.

A.To fight family laziness, set an example.

B.One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.

C.Knowing how to fight laziness is important.

D.Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.

E. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.

F. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child.

G. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.

A mother’s love

I’M a New York City firefighter. Every day, I see terror — sometimes even death. But the day I found Scarlett was different. That day I saw life. And love.

We were responding to a call about a burning garage. Outside, I heard the sound of cats crying. I couldn’t stop — I would have to look for the cats after the fire was put out.

It took a long time to finally bring the big fire under control, but we did it. No one inside was hurt.

At that point I was free to investigate the cat noises. There was still a lot of smoke and heat coming from the building. I followed the meowing(貓叫) to a spot on the sidewalk near the front of the garage. There, crying and huddled(擠作一團) together, were five terrified kittens. They must have been inside the building, as their fur was badly singed(燙燒).

I left the five kittens in a box on a neighbor’s porch(門廊).

I wanted to find the mother. It was obvious that she had gone into the burning garage and carried out all of her babies, one by one — unbelievable.

We finally found her. She was badly burnt: her eyes were blistered (起水泡), her paws(爪子) were blackened, and her fur was singed all over. You could even see her reddened skin beneath the burned fur. She could barely move. I picked her up, and she relaxed in my arms as much as her pain would allow. Sensing her trust, I shed a tear. I was determined to save this brave little cat and her family.

The vet told me they would observe the kittens and their mother overnight, but they weren’t optimistic about the mother’s changes.

About a week later, I found out she was going to live. One of the technicians suggested we name her Scarlett, because of her reddened skin.

Knowing what Scarlett endured(忍受) for her kittens, it melted my heart to see her reunited with them. She touched each of them again, nose to nose, to make sure they were all safe. She had risked her life five separate times — and it had paid off. All of her babies had survived.

As a firefighter, I see heroism(英雄事跡) every day. But what Scarlett showed me that day was the kind of bravery that can only come from a mother’s love.

1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?

A. The author went to rescue the cats as soon as he heard them crying.

B. The firefighters put out the big fire quickly and no one was hurt.

C. The mother cat moved all of her five babies to a safer place despite the fire.

D. The author didn’t find the cats until the smoke and heat were gone.

2.Why was the author determined to save the cats?

A. He refused to watch someone else die in his work.

B. He was impressed by the mother’s strong love and courage.

C. The cat’s story had made many people concerned.

D. It had taken much time and effort for him to save them.

3.Which best describes the author’s tone in the article?

A. Objective.B. Admiring.C. Excited.D. Optimistic.
