Have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched? You turned around and, sure enough, someone was looking right at you!
Parapsychologists(靈學家)say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To research whether such a “sixth sense” really exists, Robert Baker, a psychologist(心理學家)at the University of Kentucky, performed two experiments.
In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects(受試者)were eating, drinking, reading studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later, when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.
For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind a two way mirror in a laboratory setting. The people had to write down when they felt they were being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found that the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found that the subjects were no better at telling when they were started at than if they had just guessed.
Baker concludes that people do not have the ability to sense when they’re being stared at. If people doubt the outcome of his two experiments, said Baker, “I suggest they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”

D. People have a sixth sense in public places.

When someone steps on your toe by accident, you will hurt plenty. But it hurts even more, if you think the person does the same thing on purpose.Earlier studies have found that the feeling of pain can change with how it is experienced. That is why giving people sugar pills and saying they are medicine can make them feel better.
This study examined whether self-reported pain is indeed higher when the events producing the pain are understood as intentionally caused by another person. For the study, the researchers told 40 volunteers that they were going to do a series of tasks, including color matching, number counting and discomfort assessment. This last task involved their receiving a brief electric shock to the wrist. They were told that a partner, sitting in another room, would choose which task they would do, and a computer screen helped them to know their partner’s choice.
In some cases, the volunteers were told their partner had chosen the pain tolerance test.In others, they were told the computers would select the pain tolerance test regardless of their partner’s choice. When volunteers thought that their partners were making the shocks on them on purpose, the feeling made the pain worse. As a matter of fact, they were the same.
This study provides evidence that the experience of pain changes depending upon how they think when people have been harmed.Specifically, the meaning of a harm — whether it was intended — influences the amount of pain it causes. So, although a broken toe may hurt, an intentionally broken toe should hurt more.

A.the feeling of pain varies from one person to another
B.long-lasting pain damages people’s health

D.people suffer more from accidental pain
小題2:What can we infer from the text?
A.People can reduce pain by relaxing.
B.Researchers study how pain is caused.
C.Everyone should know the effect of pain.
D.People should think more about pain.
小題3:What does the underlined word “they” in the third paragraph refer to?
A.Volunteers.B.Computers.
C.Shocks.D.Pains.
小題4:What’s the author’s attitude to the result of the study?

Escaping a fire is a serious matter: knowing what to do during a fire can save life. It is important to know the way you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairs and fire escapes, but not lifts. From the lower floors of building, escape through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by window with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. A person of average height, hanging by the fingertips will have a drop of about 6 feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also very useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed before opening the window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get enough fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto the cement might end in injury. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall.
69. Which of the following people seldom use when trying to escape a fire?
A. Windows.                        B. Doors.                                   C. Fire escapes.             D. Lifts.
70. How far from the ground to the second floor window?
A. About 12 feet.                                                           B. About 3 feet.
C. Nearly 10 feet.                                                           D. About height of an average man.
71. The writer tells us that ______.
breathing in smoke might not be harmful
smoke will enter the room by an open window
fresh air can’t reach the second floor
to keep your head low will help you escape a fire

How do successful people think? What drives them? Interviews and investigations indicate that there are several keys to success that successful people share.
First of all, successful people never blame someone or something outside of themselves for their failure to go ahead. They realize that their future lies in their own hands. They understand that they cannot control things in life, such as nature, the past and other people. But in the meantime, they are well aware that they can control their own thoughts and actions. They take responsibility for their life and regard this as one of the most empowering things they can do. Perhaps what most separates successful people from others is that they live a life “on purpose”---- they are doing what they believe they are put here to do. In their opinion, having a purpose in their life is the most important element that enables them to become fully functioning people. They hold that when they live their life on purpose, their main concern is to do the job right. They love what they do ---- and it shows. People want to do business with them because of their commitment(忠誠). To live their life on purpose, successful people find a cause they believe in and create a business around it. Besides, they never easily give up. Once they have set up goals in their life, they are willing to work hard whatever it takes to achieve their goals.
