Across the globe, single parent homes are on the rise. In the US, the 2000 census (人口普查) showed 24.8 million, or nearly 24 percent of the nation’s 105.5 million households, were traditional two-parent homes. By comparison, 9.8 million households, or 9 percent of all US households were headed by an adult raising a child alone. The 1990 census showed 26 percent of homes were led by a married mother and father, and 8 percent of homes were led by a single parent.

Similar increases occurred in other countries. In the UK, lone-parent homes increased from 3.3 percent in 1990 to 5.5 percent in 1999. Single parent households in Australia rose from 5.8 percent in 1990 to 7.6 percent in 1999. Belgium saw the increase from 1.8 percent to 2.7 percent during the same period of time. These countries tend to have greater acceptance of the single parent because there are fewer nearby family members to disapprove, Riche, a Census Bureau director, said.

Just as in the US, those changes raised new questions about how involved govenment should be in helping single parent families. Some research suggests children raised in two-parent families are better off than those who depend on one.

“The position of one-parent families in any country is very much a gender (性別) issue-women’s opportunities, especially working-class women on low income,” said Sue Cohen, coordinator (協(xié)調(diào)員) of the Single Action Parents Network in England.

5.Not considering the exact number of the single-parent families, which country saw the fastest rise rate in 1999, compared with 1990?

A.UK.          B.Australia.               C.America.               D.Belgium.

6.What is the cause of the rise of single parent families across the globe?

A.The nearby family members have a favourable opinion.

B.A lone parent is well off enough to support his /her children.

C.A lot of problems have arisen in two-parent families.

D.We cannot get enough proving information from the text.

7.Which of the following is TRUE about the increase of single parent families according to the passage?

A.It will somewhat limit the growing population of younger generation.

B.Governments should take actions about the social problems brought about by it.

C.Single parent families are not looked down upon in any country mentioned here.

D.Generally speaking, the single parents needn’t worry since they are highly paid.

8.Which of the following diagrams correctly shows the rise of single parent families in the US from

1990 to 2000?

Cheating is nothing new. But today, education and administrations are finding that examples of academic dishonesty on the part of students have become more frequent--- and are less likely to be punished---than in the

past. Cheating appears to have gained acceptance among good and poor students alike.

Why is student cheating on the rise? No one really knows. Some blame the trend on a general loosening of moral values among today’s youth. Others have attributed(歸因于) increased cheating to the fact that today’s youth are far more practical than their idealistic ancestors. Whereas in the late sixties and early seventies, students were filled with visions about changing the word, today’s students feel great pressure to survive and succeed. In interviews with students at high schools and colleges around the country, both young men and women said that cheating had become easy. Some suggested they did it out of hate for teachers they didn’t respect. Others looked at it as a game. Only if they were caught, some said, would they feel guilty. “People are competitive,” said a second-year college student named Anna, from Chicago. “There is an potential fear. If you don’t do well, your life is going to be ruined. The pressure is not only from parents and friends but from yourself. To achieve. To succeed. It’s almost as though we have to surpass people to achieve our own goals.

Edward Wynne, editor of a magazine blames the rise in academic dishonesty in the schools. He claims that administrators and teachers have been too hesitant to take action. Dwight Huber, chairman of the English Department at Amarillo sees the matter differently, blaming the rise in cheating on the way students evaluated. “I would cheat if I felt I was being cheated,” Mr. Huber said. He feels that as long as teachers give short-answer tests rather than essay questions and rate students by the number of facts they can memorize rather than by how well they can combine and process information, students will try to beat the system. “ The concept of cheating is based on the false belief that the system is legal and there is something wrong with the individual who’re doing it,” he said, “That’s too easy an answer. We’ve got to start looking at the system.”

1.Educators are finding that students who cheat________.

A. have poor academic records

B. use the information in late years

C. can be academically weak or strong

D. are more likely to be punished than before

2.Which of the following statements reflects the information in the passage?

A. The pressure students faced with is partly the reason causing the student cheating.

B. Only the educational system and administrators are to blame for the rise in the cheating.

C. The 1960s vision of changing the world helped students never make mistakes.

D. Punishment for cheaters has always been severe in this country.

3.The phrase “the individuals” in Line 8, Para 3 refers to _________.

A. students who practice cheating

B. parents who put pressure on their children.

C. school administrators who approve of short-answer tests.

D. teachers who are too hesitant to take actions against cheating.

4.The author probably would agree with the point of view that _________.

A. students who cheat should be driven out of school

B. parents alone must take responsibility for the rise in student cheating

C. the educational system is sound, and students must follow every rule

D. the educational system in this country would benefit from a thorough evaluation

Not long ago the movie 2012 came into screen. The people were threatened by those scenes of destroying flood, severe earthquake, terrifying hurricane and constructions representing human civilization being destroyed and even swallowed by disaster.  Luckily, they are just the director' s imagination, but the present situation is not heading a positive direction, either.

Take my own experience in Alaska as an example. Once I took a trip to the glacier. Along the way there stood signposts marking the snow lines of different years.  They started from the foot of the mountain, but it was at the top when I finally saw melting glaciers(融化的冰川). My heart ached seeing the beautiful blue ice melting at every second.

Sad but true, they are the effects of global warming and the result of our human impact. Furthermore, each year the rising sea level will kill 56 million people, and that’s about the population of the entire Italy. According to studies, if the temperature keeps on rising like this, by the year 2050, some islands and coastal cities including New York, Shanghai, Tokyo and Sydney will be drowned in water.

Our fortune is in our own hands. It depends on us to shape our future, to reduce future human impact and find ways to form a peaceful relationship with our environment. Therefore, it's time for actions to be taken right now. Contribute a little to energy saving by using more efficient light bulbs and less hot water. Let recycle become our habit by thinking twice before throwing something away. Let us take public transportation as our first choice when going to a certain place. It might cost more time for now, but it' s to the benefit of a permanent future. Take care of every tree and grass around us by watering them or simply just avoid destroying them.

In a word, small drops of water make a big ocean. The earth does not belong to us. On the contrary, we belong to the earth. Please bear in mind that the earth is our home. It is our responsibility to build a brighter and better future of our planet and prevent what happened in the movie 2012 from becoming reality.

1. Why does the author talk about the movie 2012 in the passage ?

A.To give example.

B.To lead into the topic.

C.To make prediction.

D.To provide the evidence.

2.How did the author feel when he took a trip to the glacier?

A.Worried.

B.Puzzled.

C.Scared.

D.Bored.

3.It can be inferred from the third paragraph that________  .

A.56 million people in Italy have been killed owing to the rising sea level

B.Some islands and coastal cities will be drowned in water by the year of 2050

C.Human being will be in danger if we don't take actions to prevent the global warming

D.It is certain that what happened in the movie 2012 will come into reality

4.According to the passage, you are advised to ________.

A.drive our own private cars instead of taking buses to some place

B.recycle everything that is used

C.go to see the movie 2012 at once

D.work together to take good care of our planet

5. What does the author mean by saying "small drops of water make a big ocean"?

A.Think twice before taking action.

B.It's our duty to protect the ocean.

C.Everyone together can make a difference.

D.It's important to save every drop of water.
