Silence is unnatural to man.He begins life with a cry and ends it in stillness. In between he does all he can to make a noise in the world, and he fears silence more than anything else.Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful silence. If he is introduced to another person, and a number of pauses occur in the conversation, he regards himself as a failure, a worthless person, and is full of envy of the emptiest headed chatterbox (喋喋不休的人).He knows that ninety-nine percent of human conversation means no more than the buzzing of a fly, but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure (蠟塑人像).

The aim of conversation is not, for the most part, to communicate ideas; it is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are, it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz; there is even a buzz that is as annoying as the continuous noise made by a mosquito (蚊子).But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a quiet person. Most buzzing, fortunately, is pleasant to the ear, and some of it is pleasant even to the mind.He would be a foolish man if he waited until he had a wise thought to take part in the buzzing -with his neighbors.

Those who hate to pick up the weather as a conversational opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish 1:0 talk.Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of learning anything new. Some of them are content .if they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears, though they have nothing to tell them except that they have seen two or three new, plays or that they had food in a Swiss hotel. At the end of an evening during which they have said nothing meaningful for a long time, they just prove themselves to be successful conservationists.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2014屆江西省高二第四次月考英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:其他題

[1] At some point in your life you are bound to be required to give a speech. But are you capable of having the effect on an audience that you want to have? Here are some things to keep in mind.

[2] You may think it's good to create an informal effect, or even that it' s cool to use filler words (填充詞) such as “l(fā)ike” and “you know”. But in reality, these words add nothing, and create the danger of making you sound foolish and uninformed.

[3] Pauses can be of significant help in adding depth to your speech, but only when they  are used at the right moments. Pausing suddenly and with a panicked look will just make your audience uneasy. Also, a very long silence is the last thing you need. Make sure that your pauses are nicely placed if you want to sound like a speaker who has absolute control of what he is talking about.

[4] You also need to be careful when you switch to a new idea during the course of a speech. Often speakers ________such as “well”, “so”, and so on, when they move on to new ideas. My advice, however, is to avoid such words and to try to think of a way of making a tradition that is unique to the topic of your speech.

[5] Finally, avoid “umming” and “ahhing” he way many people do when they give speeches. You want to sound confident and assured, and the way not to do so is to put an “urn” or an “ah” in the middle of every sentence.

1.What is the text mainly about? (No more than 8 words)

_________________________________________________________________________

2.Complete the following statement with proper words. (No more than 3 words)

3.Fill in the blank in Paragraph 4 with proper words. (No more than 5 words)

__________________________________________________________________________

4.Why does the author say it' s not good to use filler words? (No more than 12 words)

_______________________________________________________________________

5.What does the word "they" (paragraph 3) probably refer to? (No more than 2 words)

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:20102011學(xué)年廣西省(上)學(xué)期高三期末英語(yǔ)卷 題型:閱讀理解

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”! I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.

First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY(準(zhǔn)確性). Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.

The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking.

Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English, they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

If you do not use your English beyond the classroom, you will forget what English you know. Remember: USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.

1.What is most probably the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To improve your reading.

B.To improve your listening.

C.To improve your spoken English.

D.To improve your vocabulary.

2.It can be inferred from the third paragraph that______.

A.don’t be fluency , Just be accuracy

B.don’t be nervous ,don’t be shy . Just write!

C.don’t be afraid of making mistakes . Just speak!

D.don’t be shy ,don’t be fluency. Just listen and write!

3.The last paragraph is possibly close to the meaning of “_____”.

A.more hurry, less speed                B.better late than never

C.silence is gold                       D.practice makes perfect

4.The text is most probably taken from a ______.

A.teacher’s diary                    B.report on study

C.sports newspaper                    D.movie magazine
