All it took was a slice of Xinjiang cake to spark heated debates online over China's policy on ethnic(民族的)minorities .
Since Monday, qiegao (cut cake) has been a trending topic on Sina Weibo, China’s main Twitter-like microblogging service.
The cake was a reference to Xinjiang’s famed nut cake, sometimes known by its old Turkic name baklava, a popular pastry across Central Asia and the Middle East. In Xinjiang, they are sold by Uygur vendors(小販)on tricycles who are known to charge dubious prices depending on the time and season.
The ethnic flare-up started after the Yueyang police from Hunan province posted a message on their official Weibo account. It reported a dispute in Pingjiang county over an overpriced piece of nut cake between a Xinjiang Uygur vendor and a villager named "Ling".
Villager Ling got into a fight with a Uygur due to a misunderstanding. The verbal dispute eventually escalated into a fight and then a mass fight. As a result, two people were injured and Xinjiang nut cakes worth about 160,000 yuan (US$25,000) were destroyed. The total damage was worth 200,000 yuan which included a broken motorcycle and injuries to people. Local police have detained(扣留) Ling. The 16 Uygur sellers were dully compensated and sent back to Xinjiang.
"Yueyang police incident" quickly became one of the most popular topics on Weibo. Yueyang police removed the post shortly after. As of Tuesday night, the topic was still amassing more than 66,000 hits.
The incident is just one of many similar cases of ethnic tensions across China, notably in Xinjiang province, where deeply entrenched social and racial frictions between the dominant ethnic Han Chinese and minority Uygur Muslims occasionally spark violence. Many Uygurs living in major Chinese cities are viewed by locals as thieves, crooks and even terrorists.

In the 60s, people asked about your astrological (about star) sign. In the 90s, they want to know your website.   71   Your website is an electronic meeting place for your family, friends and potentially, millions of people around the world. Best of all, you may not have to spend a cent. The Web is filled with all kinds of free services and all it takes is some time and creativity.
72  Like the table of contents of a book or magazine, the home page is the front door.Your site can have one or more pages, depending on how you design it.
While web pages vary greatly in their design and content, most use a traditional magazine layout(版面設計).At the top of the page is a banner(橫幅). Next comes a greeting and a short description of the site. Pictures, text, and links to other websites follow.
73  Think about whom the site is for and what you want to say. Next, gather up the material that you want to put on the site.
While there are no rules you have to follow, there are a few things to keep in mind:   74  If you are too much at the beginning, you may never get the site off the ground. You can always add to your site.
Less is better. Most people don’t like to read a lot of text online.   75

Section A (10 points)
Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information from the passage. WRITE NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.
Many students eat their breakfasts on the way to school or in the dinning-room. But some of them don’t really know how to eat well when eating out.
Here is some important advice. The first is to eat less fast food. The most obvious harm of eating too much fast food is weight gaining because of too much fat. Young people and adults are at risk of diseases related to weight.
Too much fast food can drag your body down. French fries, for example, were recently found to contain much more acryl amide(丙烯酰胺) than other food. This may cause cancer. Actually, deep fried food all contains acryl amide. So don’t eat it too often.
Soda is another thing you should watch out for. Cokes and other sodas contain a lot of sugar and can slow down a person’s calcium absorption, so it’s best to drink as little soda as possible.
Food in the dinning-room may not be as tasty as fast food, but it’s actually easier to make healthy choices. Human bodies need variety. You can have a meal that balances lean proteins, vitamins and complex carbohydrates(碳水化合物). In other words, a meal with fish or meat, vegetables and some bread or rice will provide you with most nutrients that the body needs.
Some snacks, on the other hand, will help keep you going until your next big meal. It is natural for teenagers, especially boys, to feel hungry during school time. Don’t forget to take some foods, like whole-grain biscuits or low-fat milk in your school bag.

As prices and building costs keep rising, the do-it-yourself (DIY) trend (趨勢) in the U.S. continues to grow.
“We needed furniture (家具) for our living room,” says John Ross, “And we just didn't have enough money to buy it. So we decide to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. “First we make our habits, then our habits make us.”——Charles C.Noble
It’s such a simple concept, yet it's something we don’t always do. It’s not extremely difficult to do, and yet I think it’s something that would make a world of difference in anyone’s life. Break your goals into habits, and focus on putting those habits into autopilot. My belief is that having one goal to focus on is much more powerful than having many goals.
I try to turn my goals into habits, and in doing so,I put my goals on autopilot. Turning a goal into a habit means really focusing on it,seriously, for at least a month,to the exclusion of all else. The more you can focus on it, the more it’ll be put on autopilot. Let’s look at my marathon goal as an example. I was just starting out in running, and l had the brilliant idea to run a marathon within a year. But in order to achieve that goal,I broke it down into two habits:
1.I had to make running a daily habit.
2.I had to report to people in order to have accountability(責任)—I did this through family, friends and coworkers, through a blog, and through a column in my local newspaper every two weeks. With this accountability, there’s no way l would stop running.
The accountability habit took a couple of months, mainly because I didn’t focus on it too much while l was building the running habit. But it stuck, and for that first year of running,I would report to people I knew and blog about my running every day and I would write a column every two weeks for my local paper.
Once those two habits were firmly fixed,my marathon goal was pretty much on autopilot. I still had to do the work,of course, but it didn’t require constant focus. And eventually,I ran the marathon. I was able to achieve this because, all year long,I had the daily running habit and daily accountability habit. I put my marathon goal into autopilot, and that made it much easier--instead of struggling with it daily for an entire year,I focused on it for one month and was able to accomplish it while focusing on new habits and goals.
55.According to the passage,we can see the key to forming a habit is ______________.
A.to break the goals into habits
B.to report to other people about your plan
C.to set a reasonable goal first
D.to focus on the habit as much as possible
56.The author told people about his running in order to ______________.
A.get more support
B.ask for their opinions
C.carry out his plan better
D.earn more admiration
57.What do we know about the author?
A.He was a local athlete.
B.He often gave people advice.
C.He had no blogs before.
D.He wrote for a local newspaper.
58.The passage is mainly about ______________.
A.goals and habits
B.how to turn your goals into habits
C.habits and achievements
D.how to make running a good habit

When Charles Strattion was five, he stopped growing. His mother took him to see the famous showman, P. T. Barnum, and thought a small person would be the perfect addition to his show. He hired Charles’ parents along with him, and they traveled around the world together.
He gave the two-foot-tall Charles a new name, general Tom Thumb. He taught Tom how to sing, dance, act, and tell jokes. When he felt Tom was ready to perform on stage, he made up ads. To stir up great interest, he said that Tom was eleven years old and had come from England.
