Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. When a person does a certain thing again, he is driven by some unseen force to do the same thing repeatedly, then a habit is formed. Once a habit is formed, it is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to get rid of. It is therefore very important that we should pay great attention to the formation of habits. Children often form bad habits, some of which remain with them as long as they live. Older persons also form bad habits lasting as long as they live, and sometimes become ruined by them.

There are other habits which, when formed in early life, are of great help. Many successful men say that much of their success has something to do with certain habits in early life, such as early rising, honesty and so on.

Among the habits which children should not form are laziness, lying, stealing and so on. These are all easily formed habits. Unluckily older persons often form habits which could have been avoided.

We should keep away from all these bad habits, and try to form such habits as will be good for ourselves and others.

Students throughout the world spend their money in different ways. A detailed study on student spending indicated that young people's spending habits have changed greatly over the past few years. The study also says that the change is about the same around the world, however. Here are some examples of popular student spending habits---both healthy and also unhealthy---around the world today.
Students these days have too much brand awareness, so their spending on clothes is now quite high. On average, students buy one or two complete sets of new clothes each month, and this makes their total spending higher.
Student spending shows quite an up-and-down pattern as they get older. Students spend a lot more money in high school than before their  high school years because when they enter high school, their exposure (接觸到) to branded goods increases. As the students get close to graduation, their expenses start to go down. This is the time when they have to become more responsible about money and start to understand its importance.
Students also spend a lot more on entertainment than their parents did when they were young, because of the easy access to entertainment these days. Shopping is considered to be quite entertaining because of all the different forms of amusement presented by shopping malls. These attract students to buy things.
Student spending on food hasn't increased much, but there has been a marked increase in the use of alcohol. There are several more places in which students can drink now. The culture of having parties has also grown a lot among students too, and students usually end up spending a lot on alcohol in such places.
This is not such a bad situation, actually. The study indicates that although student spending has shot through the roof, at the same time, they are financially much stronger today than they were in the past. This is compensation (補償,回報), and probably it is just another branch of the life that we are living in this speedily advancing world.
60. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Unhealthy student spending habits.
B. Why student spending is changing.
C. How a student should spend money.
D. A study on student spending.
61. Why do students spend less money just before graduation?
A. They see fewer products.
B. They are more conscious of the value of money.
C. They have no time to entertain themselves or go shopping.
D. Their spending on clothing goes down.
62. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Student spending habits are becoming worse and worse.
B. Today's students spend more money on entertainment than on clothing.
C. Today's students are better at earning money than their parents.
D. Student spending on food has increased the least.
63. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
①Paragraph 1;   ②="Paragraph" 2; ③="Paragraph" 3; ④="Paragraph" 4;
⑤="Paragraph" 5; ⑥="Paragraph" 6;

As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease-especially in changing our many unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought about this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight, but does not eat very nutritious foods, who feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day, but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier.
The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is just “not ill” and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body’s special needs. Both types have simply been called “well”. In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms “well” and “wellness” only to those who are actively attempting to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise, and they make a point of monitoring their body’s condition. Most important, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical disease or handicap (缺陷) may be “well”, in this new sense, if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. “Wellness” may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can struggle for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial influence on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life.
【小題1】Today’s medical care is placing more stress on                .

A.monitoring patients’ body functions
B.removing people’s bad living habits
C.ensuring people’s psychological well-being
D.keeping people in a healthy physical condition
【小題2】Traditionally, a person is considered “well” if he or she                 .
A.is free from any kind of disease
B.does not have any physical handicaps
C.attempts to maintain the best possible health
D.keeps a proper balance between work and leisure
【小題3】According to the passage, which of the following is WRONG?
A.Wellness is now just an ideal in many people’s mind.
B.Someone who drinks a few beers at home most nights is not healthy.
C.The concept of wellness can help people face the challenges of daily life.
D.A man without any physical or mental problem may not be really healthy.
【小題4】According to the author, healthy people are those who                        .
A.do not have any symptoms of disease
B.have strong muscles as well as slim figures
C.try to keep healthy as possible, regardless of their limitations
D.can recover from illness even without seeking medical care

A single night of taking the drug Ecstasy (搖頭丸) can cause serious brain damage and speed up the start of Parkinson’s disease(帕金森綜合癥), scientists say. Just two or three Ecstasy tablets can permanently destroy brain cells that affect movement and reasoning, according to American research that links the drug to Parkinson’s for the first time.
A study by a team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, involving squirrel monkeys and baboons (狒狒) found that both species suffered permanent damage to key cells, which are lost in Parkinson’s, after receiving three low doses(劑量)of Ecstasy at three-hour periods.
The study is particularly important because baboons are one of the best animal models for the human brain. George Ricaurte, who led the research, said that the widespread abuse of drug might have caused severe damage. “The most troubling result is that young adults using Ecstasy may be increasing their risk of developing Parkinsonism as they get older.”
Alan Leshner, a former director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse, said, “This study emphasizes the multi-aspect damage that Ecstasy causes to users. We’ve long known that repeated use damages brain cells. But this study shows that even very occasional(偶爾) use can have long-lasting effects on many different brain systems. It sends an important message to young people: don’t experiment with your own brain.”
Janet Betts, a mother whose teenage daughter Leah died after a single Ecstasy tablet in 1995, said, “This comes as no surprise. But people can’t see the effects at first, and they say it won’t happen to them. We’ll see the symptoms later, just as we have with smoking.”
【小題1】The article is intended to ______.

A.explain the bad effects of drugs on people’s health
B.warn young people of the risk of taking the drug Ecstasy
C.persuade people out of such bad habits as smoking and using drugs
D.tell us the links between the drug Ecstasy and the animal models
【小題2】We know from the passage that a low dose of Ecstasy ______.
A.can permanently destroy one’s brain cells
B.can cause serious brain damage occasionally
C.will result in immediate symptoms
D.may bring on Parkinson’s at once
【小題3】Why are squirrel monkeys and baboons involved in the experiments?
A.Because these animals usually take drugs.
B.Because their brain is similar to human beings.
C.Because there is a model in the animals’ brains.
D.Because they will soon get well after the experiment.
【小題4】The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph probably refers to”        ”.
A.Leah’s death after a single tablet
B.the symptoms after smoking
C.the damage to the brain systems
D.repeated use of the drug

When the lazy days of summer arrive and the schedule is filled with swimming, camp, and family vacations,it can be a challenge to find time for learning. But kids’ reading skills don’t have to grow cold once school’s out. Here are some ways to make reading a natural part of their summer fun:

Explore your library. Visit your local library to borrow books and magazines that your kids haven’t seen before. Many libraries have summer reading programs, book clubs, and reading contests(比賽) for even the youngest borrowers. With a new library card,a child will feel extra grownup by borrowing books.

Read on the road. Going on a long car trip?Make sure there are some books at the back seat. When you stop driving, read the books aloud. Get some audio books in libraries and listen to them together during driving time.

Make your own books. Pick one of your family’s favorite parts of summer—whether it’s baseball, ice cream, or the pool—and have your child draw pictures of it or cut out pictures from magazines. Stick(粘貼) the pictures onto paper to make a booklet(小冊子)and write text for it. When you’re done, read the book together. Reread it whenever you like!

Keep in touch. Kids don’t have to go away to write about summer vacation. Even if your family stays home, they can send postcards to tell friends and relatives about their adventures(冒險經歷). Ask a relative to be your child’s pen pal and encourage them to write each week.

Keep up the reading habits. Even if everything else changes during the summer, keep up the reading habits around your house. Read with your kids every day—whether it’s just before bedtime or under a shady tree on a lazy afternoon. And don’t forget to take a book to the beach!Just brush the sand off the pages — it’s no sweat!

A. visit the local library and join book clubs

B. borrow some audio books to listen to

3.By saying “Just brush the sand off the pages—it’s no sweat”,the author means________.

A. taking away the sand on the book is very difficult

B. a special book is needed when you’re reading on the beach

C. one can remove the sand on the book with a brush easily

D. there’s no trouble reading even on the beach

4.Who are the possible readers of the passage?

A. Parents.                         B. Students.                                 C. Teachers.                       D. Editors.
