We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.
Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must __1  test its pupils. The standards may be changed — no examination is 2  — but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not 3 either in examinations or in any controls in school or on teachers. This would mean everything would depend on 4  since every pupil would depend on efficiency, the values and the purpose of each 5  .
Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the 6  respected schools and from families known to them – a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from an ill-respected school can show certificates to prove he is _7  for a job, while the lack of a certificate indicates the unsuitability of a 8  child attending a well-respected school. This defense of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were 9  , and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her school’s reputation, unable to 10 for employment with the child from the 11__ school.
The opponents of the examination system suggest that examinations are an 12  force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, __13 or academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic 14  . The selection would be made by people who themselves are 15  selected by some computer.

科目:高中英語 來源:2012-2013學年江蘇省如皋中學高二10月階段練習英語試題(帶解析) 題型:閱讀理解

A speech is a wonderful opportunity to inform, persuade or entertain. The best speeches often take on a combination of all three of these components(組成部分). However, before you can go about the writing of a great speech, it is important to set goals. Goals keep you, your speech and your audience focused.
What a goal is
In the context of a speech, a goal is the purpose of the speech, and what it hopes to accomplish. For example, the goal of a eulogy(頌歌) might be to celebrate the life of a loved one. The goal of a speech at a political gathering would be to inform the crowd about the political position of a candidate and persuade them to vote and campaign for the candidate in question(正被討論的).
Why a goal is important
Without a goal, a speech is without direction. The goal informs the structure and content of the speech. For example, if a speech's goal is to convince people that smoking is bad for them, the speech will be structured with persuasive arguments to back up the goal. A speech with a goal of informing the audience will keep the information fair and factual.
A goal is incredibly important to the speech's ability to connect with an audience. If the speaker is unaware of the goal of the speech, the audience will likely be unaware as well. This severely reduces the effectiveness of the message.
Aside from informing the audience of the content and structure, a speech's goal drives the speaker to greater heights. If a speaker is asked to speak on a specific subject, but never establishes the goal, they won't know where to start in the research, organizing and writing of the speech.
______________
If you have been charged with(被委以) delivering a speech, establishing a goal can seem difficult at first. There are several things to take into consideration. First, think about who you will be speaking to. The demographic(人口統計) of your audience will likely determine whether you will be able to persuade them, or whether they will be able to sit through(一直坐到……結束). Second, think about the topic itself. If the topic is something controversial(有爭議的), it may worth your while to consider an informative approach to present both sides of the issue. Finally, consider your resources. A speech with an informative or persuasive goal usually requires a great deal of research, and sometimes takes more time to write.
【小題1】According to the passage, what three components does the best speech combine?

A.Informing, delivering and entertaining.
B.Informing, persuading and entertaining.
C.Informing, writing and delivering.
D.Informing, writing and persuading.
【小題2】The goal of a speech at a political gathering might be ________.
A.to persuade the audience to vote for a candidate
B.to celebrate the life of a person you admire
C.to entertain the audience with humor and magic
D.to persuade the audience to buy new products
【小題3】All the following indicate the importance of a speech goal EXCEPT that ________.
A.a speech will lose its direction without a goal
B.a speech goal can help keep the audience aware of the speech
C.a speech goal can help the speaker know about the research, organizing and writing
D.a speech goal makes it possible for the speaker to achieve whatever he wants in life
【小題4】Which of the following can be filled into the blank as the subtitle for the last paragraph?
A.How to achieve a speech goalB.How to deliver a difficult speech
C.What to consider to establish a goalD.What to consider to deliver a speech

第三部分 閱讀理解
(共15小題,每題2分,滿分30分)
Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it’s not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game.
Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test --- unless the person cheats again.
Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.
A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions(解決辦法) together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.
56.The author thinks that when kids cheat in class, _______.
A.it is unfair to other people    B.it does harm to their heath
C.teachers should punish them  D.teachers shouldn’t stop them at once
57.Some students like cheating mainly because_________.
A.the material in the test is very difficult
B.they want to do better than the others
C.cheating can make hard things seem very easy
D.they have little time to study their lessons
58.The fourth paragraph mainly tells us______.
A.cheating isn’t a good idea   B.why kids cheat in the test
C.some kids can’t pass the test without cheating
D.some kids don’t spend the time studying
59.We can learn from the passage______.
A.cheaters are often thought highly of
B.people show no respect for those who cheat
C.parents whose kids cheat are often in trouble
D.kids cheat in the test because of swim practice
60.In the passage those cheaters are advised to_______.
A.spend more time on school than on sports
B.find good solutions instead of cheating
C.try hard to be intelligent rather than lazy
D.ask their classmates for good methods of study

科目:高中英語 來源:2010-2011江西贛縣中學南北校區高二學年5月聯考英語試卷 題型:閱讀理解

A Full-Time School Called Life
You are enrolled in a full-time school called “life”. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or hate them, but you have designed them as part of your curriculum.
Why are you here? What is your purpose? Humans have sought to discover the meaning of life for a very long time. What we and our ancestors overlooked, however, is there is no one answer. The meaning of life is different for every individual.
Each person has his or her own purpose and distinct path, unique and separate from anyone else’s. As you travel your life path, you will be presented with numerous lessons that you will need to learn in order to fulfill that purpose. The lessons you are presented with are specific to you; learning these lessons is a key to discovering and fulfilling the meaning and connection of your own life.
As you travel through your lifetime, you may encounter challenging lessons that others don’t have to face, while others spend years struggling with challenges that you don’t need to deal with. You may never know why you are blessed with a wonderful marriage, while your friends suffer through bitter arguments and painful divorces, just as you cannot be sure why you struggle financially while your peers enjoy abundance. The only thing you can count on for certain is that you specifically need to learn; whether we choose to learn them or not is entirely up to you.
The challenge here, therefore , is to align(與…保持一致)yourself with your own unique path by learning individual lessons. This is one of the most difficult challenges you will be faced with in your lifetime, as sometimes your path will be completely different from others. But, remember, don’t compare your path to the people around you and focus on the difference between their lessons and yours. You need to remember that you will only be faced with lessons that you are capable of learning and are specific to your own growth.
Our sense of fairness is the expectation of equity—the assumption that all things are equal and that justice will always prevail. Life is not, in fact, fair, and you may indeed have a more difficult lift path than others around you, deserved or not. Everyone’s circumstances are unique, and everyone needs to handle his or her own circumstances differently. If you want to move toward calm, you will be required to move out the comparing phrase of “it’s not fair”. Focusing on the unfairness of circumstances keeps you comparing yourself with others rather than appreciating your own special uniqueness. You miss out on learning your individual lessons by distracting yourself with feeling of bitterness and anger.
【小題1】.According to the passage, how can the meaning of your life be realized?

A.Having the same opinions as others.
B.Taking the distinct path from others.
C.Learning the lessons presented to you.
D.Doing the different things from others.
【小題2】. From the passage we can conclude ______.
A.everyone has his own track to follow
B.the same thing usually happen to the peers
C.a painful divorce must lie in financial problems
D.a wealthy man must have a wonderful marriage
【小題3】. In your lifetimes, the lessons you are faced with ______.
A.are beyond your powerB.keep you from growth
C.limit your developmentD.help you with your success
【小題4】. Which of the following is TRUE?
A.All things are equal and justice will always prevail.
B.You should learn to appreciate your specific uniqueness.
C.One has to fix his mind on unfairness of circumstances.
D.The teachers have designed the lessons as part of your curriculum in the life school..
【小題5】. Life is called a full-time school, because ______.
A.it is full of all lessons to learn
B.you have plenty of time to learn lessons
C.you meet with specific lessons every day
D.there are so many subjects for you to choose

科目:高中英語 來源:2012-2013學年重慶市高三上學期半期考試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Everyone knows about straight-A students. We see them frequently in TV situation comedies and in movies like Revenge(報復)of the Nerds. They get high grades, all right, but only by becoming dull laborers, their noses always stuck in a book. They are not good at social communication and look clumsy(笨拙的) while doing sports.

How, then, do we account for Domenica Roman or Paul Melendres?

Roman is on the tennis team at Fairmont Senior High School. She also sings in the choral group, serves on the student council and is a member of the mathematics society. For two years she has maintained A’s in every subject. Melendres, a freshman at the University of New Mexico, was student-body president at Valley High School in Albuquerque. He played soccer and basketball well, exhibited at the science fair, and meanwhile worked as a reporter on a local television station. Being a speech giver at the graduation ceremony, he achieved straight A’s in his regular classes, plus bonus points for A’s in two college-level courses.

How do super-achievers like Roman and Melendres do it? Brains aren’t the only answer. “Top grades don’t always go to the brightest students,” declares Herbert Walberg, a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who has conducted major studies on super-achieving students. “Knowing how to make the most of your innate(天生的)abilities counts for more. Much more.”

In fact, Walberg says, students with high IQ sometimes don’t do as well as classmates with lower IQ. For them, learning comes too easily and they never find out how to get down.

Hard work isn’t the whole story, either. “It’s not how long you sit there with the books open,” said one of the many-A students we interviewed. “It’s what you do while you’re sitting.” Indeed, some of these students actually put in fewer hours of homework time than their lower-scoring classmates.

The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can readily learn.

1.The underlined word “nerds” can probably be________ .

A.dull bookworms lacking sports and social skills

B.successful top students popular with their peers

C.students with certain learning difficulties

D.born leaders crazy about social activities

2.What can we conclude from the first paragraph?

A.Most TV programs and films are about straight-A students.

B.People have unfavorable impression on straight-A students.

C.Everyone knows about straight-A students from TV or films.

D.Straight-A students are well admired by people in the society.

3.Some students become super-achievers mainly because_________ .

A.they are born cleverer than others

B.they work longer hours at study

C.they make full use of their abilities

D.they know the shortcut to success

4.What will be talked about after the last paragraph?

A.The interviews with more students.

B.The role IQ plays in learning well.

C.The techniques to be better learners.

D.The achievements top students make.

5.What can we infer from the passage?

A.IQ is more important than hard work in study.

B.The brightest students can never get low grades.

C.Top students certainly achieve all-around developments.

D.Students with average IQ can become super-achievers.
