Dear Alfred,

I want to tell you how important your help is to my life.

Growing up, I had people telling me I was too slow, though, with an IQ of 150 at 17, I’m anything but stupid. The fact was that I was found to have ADIID(注意力缺陷多動障礙). Anxious all the time, I was unable to keep focused for more than an hour at a time.

However, when something did interest me, I could become absorbed. In high school, I became curious about the computer, and built my first website. Moreover, I completed the senior course of Computer Basics, plus five relevant pre-college courses.

While I was exploring my curiosity, my disease got worse. I wanted to go to college after high school, but couldn’t . So, I was killing my time at home until June 2012 when I discovered the online computer courses of your training center.

Since then, I have taken courses like Data Science and Advanced Mathematics. Currently, I’m learning your Probability course. I have hundreds of printer paper, covered in self-written notes from your video. This has given me a purpose.

Last year, I spent all my time looking for a job where, without dealing with the public , I could work alone, but still have a team to talk to. Luckily, I discovered the job—Data Analyst—this month and have been going full steam ahead. I want to prove that I can teach myself a respectful profession, without going to college, and be just as good as, if not better than, my competitors.

Thank you. You’ve given me hope that I can follow my heart. For the first time, I feel good about myself because I’m doing something, not because someone told me I was doing good. I feel whole.

This is why you’re saving my life.

Yours,

Tanis

Children who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk of becoming nearsighted, new research suggests.

In the study, researchers looked at about 1,900 schoolchildren. The scientists found that the kids who had been instructed to spend more time outdoors over three years were 23 percent less likely to develop nearsightedness during this time than those who had not been instructed to spend more time outdoors. Moreover, among the kids who did become nearsighted during the study, the degree to which their eyesight worsened was slightly smaller among those who spent more time outdoors.

The researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was 7 at the start of the study, to attend one additional 60-minute class of outdoor activities during each school day for three years. The parents of these children were also encouraged to engage their children in outdoor activities after school, especially during weekends and holidays. The other half of the children, from another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years, 30.4 percent of the kids in the intervention(干預) group had become nearsighted, compared with 38.5 percent of the kids in the other group.

It is not clear exactly why spending more time outside would benefit children’s eyesight, the researchers said. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light intensity found outdoors may increase the release of the chemical dopamine(多巴胺) of the eye. In turn, dopamine is known to restrain(抑制) the type of growth in the eye that is associated with nearsightedness.

Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. However, it’s important to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light, which can be damaging.

1.What did the children in the intervention group do during each school day?

A. Attend an extra class of outdoor activities.

B. Continue to do their usual activities.

C. Spend one hour in doing eye exercises.

D. Participate in outdoor activities with parents.

2.What can be inferred about the chemical dopamine?

A. It can contribute to poor sight. B. It can damage people’s brain

C. It is beneficial to eyesight. D. It means low levels of light intensity.

3.What may be discussed in the following paragraph?

A. How to design outdoor activities for kids.

B. How to prevent kids becoming nearsighted.

C. How to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light.

D. How to encourage kids to join in outdoor activities.

4.Which can serve as the best title for the passage?

A. The More Time Outdoors, the Better

B. Kids May See Better if They Play Outside

C. It’s Time to Engage Kids in Outdoor Activities

D. Researchers Found a Cure for Nearsightedness

Golden lion tamarins (GLT) are among the most endangered animals on earth. They have fur which ranges in color from reddish orange to golden brown. They are the smallest monkeys in the world, and they weigh only half a kilogram. They move quickly through the forest. Each group of these delightful creatures needs a living space of about two square kilometres of thick forest. They are named after lions because of the ring of fur around their faces. Their only natural habitat(棲息地)is the Atlantic forest in Brazil.

Sadly,it is unusual to see a GLT nowadays, and there are very few of them left because they are hunted for the pet trade. In addition, the rapid expansion in the human population has resulted in the need for more land to grow crops, leaving them homeless.

GLTs live in close family groups. In the1970s,the Brazilian scientist,Eduardo Figueiro, realized what was happening to this rare animal, and began trying to save them, which has been supported by the government. He said,“It's so important to protect the animal, who evolved more than 20 million years ago. The worst problem is that the monkeys cannot travel without tree cover. It is trees that connect these groups. In this way,the monkeys can meet and socialize with each other. " Meanwhile , special patrols(巡邏) have been organized by government in the reserves to prevent hunting and forest fires.

As a result of these actions, the number of GLTs has grown to about 1500. There are also another 450 living in zoos throughout the world. Here they can be seen living in happy and close family groups, with the male gently taking much of the responsibility for the young.

1.The main idea of Paragraph 1 is GLTs' .

A. main characteristics B. present situations

C. value D. habitat

2.According to Figueiro,to save GLTs the most important thing is to .

A. prevent forest fires B. keep as many trees as possible

C. educate people to stop hunting them D. make them live in close family groups

3.What can be inferred from the text

A. GLTs are dying out nowadays.

B. Some GLTs feed on tree leaves.

C. Some GLTs are living in the Atlantic forest.

D. Brazil has been taking active actions to save GLTs.

4.We can conclude from the text that zoos

A. keep GLTs to separate them from each other

B. have taken a key role in the pet trade of GLTs

C. are helping raise GLTs to increase their population

D. catch GLTs and kill them cruelly to get their fur

I was in my first year of college, making friends and enjoying life, but then my whole world turned upside down. I had a heart attack. It felt like someone was stabbing(刺) me in the chest with a knife over and over again.

After three months of rest I went back to college, but then things took a turn for the worse. I was staying at my Nana’s house and woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible pain in my chest. I knew I was having a heart attack again.

I couldn’t even shout for help. Luckily my grandpa was going to the toilet and heard me falling out of bed. If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be here.

The two holes in my heart were causing the problems and I needed an operation immediately to repair them. Unfortunately, the surgery didn’t go well and they only managed to repair one of the holes.

When I woke up from the operation, I had a really dry mouth and couldn’t wait to have something to eat and drink. The biggest shock of all came when I was told that I needed a heart transplant and was put on the register. The doctors were stunned(吃驚地) at how quickly heart failure came on—it usually takes years, but it took my heart less than six months to get to that stage. My whole world came crashing down, but I stayed strong. It was a choice between crying every day and getting on with my life.

As time went on, life became even harder. I hated feeling weak all the time and needing help with everything. It got to the point where I thought I would never get a new heart. I was diagnosed with depression.

Even though I thought that Christmas 2016 would be my last, I really enjoyed it and even had a good New Year. Everyone was crying for me when the clock struck midnight and they told me to keep fighting.

A week later, I got a call from the doctors saying they’d found a suitable donor(捐贈人). My wish came true and thankfully the operation went well. I spent four hours in surgery where they took out my old heart and put a new one in. When I woke up I burst out crying. I had a second chance of life.

1.What happened when the author was having his second heart attack?

A. He felt less pain than he had during the previous one.

B. He realized what it was and shouted for help in time.

C. He narrowly escaped death thanks to his grandfather.

D. He decided to have an operation to repair the two holes in his heart.

2.When the author learned that he needed a heart transplant, he ______.

A. couldn’t help crying every day

B. chose to continue to fight for his life

C. felt so depressed that he tried to kill himself

D. was anxious about his heart failure

3.After Christmas 2016, the author ______.

A. was convinced that the past Christmas had been his last

B. felt blessed and grateful for his second chance of life

C. received a heart transplant but the operation didn’t go well

D. felt hopeless all the time and was diagnosed with depression

4.Which one would be the best title for the text?

A. Choices Matter More Than Anything Else.

B. Rebuilding My College Life

C. Struggling to Have a New Life.

D. The Most Special Christmas
