閱讀理解
Since the pre-historic times, man has had an urge to satisfy his needs. Be it hunger, shelter or search for a mate, he has always controlled the situations to his advantage. Probably this might be the reason why we humans are the most developed of all living species on the earth. As we climbed the steps of development, we somehow left behind common sense and logical thinking -- we forgot that we have stopped thinking
ahead of time.
If you are hungry, what do you do? Get a piece of your favorite meal and stay quiet. Just like your
stomach, even your mind is hungry. But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about
your dream lover, favorite star and many such things. So it silently began to care about your needs and
never let itself grow. When mind looses its freedom to grow, creativity gets a full stop. This might be the
reason why we all sometimes think "What happens next?", "Why can't I think?" "Why am I always given
the difficult problems?" Well, this is the result of using our brain for thinking of not-so-worthy things.
Hunger of the mind can be actually satisfied through reading. Now why reading and not watching TV? Because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from the childhood. Just like that to
develop other aspects of our life, we have to turn to reading. You have innumerable number of books in
this world which will answer all your "How to?" questions. The interesting part of the book is stored in your mind as a seed. Now this seed is unknowingly used by you in your future to develop new ideas. The same seed, if used many times, can help you link and relate a lot of things, of which you would have never
thought in your wildest dreams! This is nothing but creativity. More the number of books you read, your
mind will open up like never before.
1. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To show humans are the most developed.
B. To introduce the topic of the passage.
C. To indicate people have different needs to satisfy.
D. To explain why people need to read.
2. What does the author mean by saying "When mind looses its freedom to grow, creativity gets a full
stop."
A. When mind keeps growing, creativity fully stops.
B. When freedom is lost, creativity gets a full stop.
C. When mind stops growing, creativity fully stops.
D. When growing is lost, creativity gets a flail stop.
3. The paragraph following the passage is probably about ______.
A. how the pre-historic man feeds his mind
B. what other advantages reading brings
C. how to develop creativity
D. how to satisfy your mind by watching TV
4. The author tends to tell us ______.
A. reading can satisfy your all needs
B. reading can result from creativity
C. reading can feed your mind
D. reading can realize your dreams

London—British supermodel Kate Moss quitted modeling for a time last year after becoming disillusioned (be set free from mistaken beliefs) with the industry's hedonistic(享樂主義的) and drug-fuelled lifestyle.

“I quit because I thought: 'I hate ... it'. I didn't want to have to say I am a model ever again.” Moss said in an interview with Britain's Time Out magazine published Tuesday. The Londoner told the magazine the only way she could deal with life in the fashion industry was to “get out of it” in an apparent (顯而易見的) reference to her much-publicized battle with alcohol and drugs.

“In fashion, excess (無節制的) is not for creative purposes, whatever people may say. It is about escapism. You just have to get out of it to deal with it.” Moss said.

It was the only way that you could go out night and night and do all these boring dinners. You are never allowed to be tired. It is a sin to be tired.

But Moss, whose skinny (瘦骨嶙峋的) frame and delicate features have adorned (裝飾) countless magazine covers over the last 10 years, was eventually persuaded to return to the job that made her a superstar and one of the wealthiest women with an estimated fortune of 15 million pounds ($ 21. 84 million).

Moss said that this time round, she was determined to do things differently and have more control over the type of the work she did.

“I have made my mistakes and I have learned my lesson.”

1Who does “the Londoner” in the second paragraph refer to?

    A. Kate Moss.

    B. The reporter.

    C. The reader.

    D. Kate's boss

2Why did Kate Moss quit her job?

    C. Because she wasn't popular any longer.

No woman can be too rich or too thin. This saying often attributed to the late Duchess of Windsor embodies much of the odd spirit of our times.Being thin is deemed as such a virtue. The

problem with such a view is that some people actually attempt to live by it.I myself have fantasies of slipping into narrow designer clothes.Consequently, I have been on a diet for the better-or worse-part of my life.Being rich wouldn't be bad either, but that won't happen unless an unknown relative dies suddenly in some distant land, leaving me millions of dollars.Where did we go off the track? When did eating butter become a sin, and a little bit of extra flesh unappealing, if not repellent? All religions have certain days when people refrain from eating and excessive eating is one of Christianity's seven deadly sins. However, until quite recently, most people had a problem getting enough to eat.In some religious groups, wealth was a symbol of probable salvation and high morals, and fatness a sign of wealth and well-being.Today the opposite is true.We have shifted to thinness as our new mark of virtue. The result is that being fat –or even only somewhat overweight-is bad because it implies a lack of moral strength.

Our obsession(迷戀)with thinness is also fueled by health concerns. It is true that in this country we have more overweight people than ever before, and that, in many cases, being overweight correlates with an increased risk of heart and blood vessel disease. These diseases., however, may as much to do with our way of life and our high-fat diets as with excess weight. And the associated risk of cancer in the digestive system may be more of a dietary problem-too much fat and a lack of fiber-than a weight problem. The real concern, then, is not what we weight too much, but that we neither exercise enough nor eat well.Exercise is necessary for strong bones and both heart and lung health.A balanced diet without a lot of fat can also help the body avoid many diseases. We should surely stop paying so much attention to weight.Simply being thin is not enough. It is actually hazardous if those who(or already are)thin think they are automatically healthy and thus free from paying attention to their overall life-style.Thinness can be pure vainglory(虛榮).

(1)

In the eyes of the author, an odd phenomenon nowadays is that ________.

[ ]

A.

the Duchess of Windsor is regarded as a woman of virtue

B.

looking slim is a symbol of having a large fortune

C.

being thin is viewed as a much desired quality

D.

religious people are not necessarily virtuous

(2)

Swept by the prevailing trend, the author ________.

[ ]

A.

had to go on a diet for the greater part of her life

B.

could still prevent herself from going off the track

C.

had to seek help from rich distant relatives

D.

had to wear highly fashionable clothes

(3)

In human history, people's views on body weight ________

[ ]

A.

were closely related to their religious beliefs

B.

changed from time to time

C.

varied between the poor and the rich

D.

led to different moral standard

(4)

The author criticizes women's obsession with thinness ________.

[ ]

A.

from an economic and educational perspective

B.

from sociological and medical points of view

C.

from a historical and religious standpoint

D.

in the light of moral principles

(5)

What's the author's advice to women who are absorbed in the idea of thinness?

[ ]

A.

They should be more concerned with their overall life style.

B.

They should be more watchful for fatal diseases.

C.

They should gain weight to look healthy

D.

They should rid themselves of fantasies about designer clothes

great-grandparents.
Those still alive in Valdosta,Georgia in 2060 will be able to share a part of their youth with the youth
of the day, when the city's time capsule (時間膠囊) is dug up in Drexel Park.
Students from the Valdosta City School System have had a hand in collecting information that will be
placed in the time capsule.
Kindergarten to the second graders studied transportation (交通). Third through fifth graders looked
at the technology of today.  Sixth through eighth focused on (關注) music and entertainment.  Ninth
through twelfth graders went to
work on fashion and food.

Many students detai1(詳述)  the food of the moment.  Susanna Sin,16,includes the local. restaurants.  " People will want to know what is here, and maybe it will be here then," said Sin,an 11th grader. Sin
