A small piece of fish each, day may keep the heart doctor away. That’s the finding of a study of Dutchmen in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce(英兩) of salt water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish.

The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long-held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.

Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But previous research has shown that the level of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption average more than 3 ounces.

F  or 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish. At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish.

During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. This relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol levels.

What is the author’s attitude towards the topic?

       A.Disappointed.   B.Sad.  C.Concerned.      D.Satisfied.

We can infer from the passage that there are fewer heart disease deaths in the countries      .

A.that are highly developed       B.with a lot of fish

C.with high consumption of fish D.where it is very cold

The underlined words “This relationship” refers to the connection between      and deaths from heart disease.

A.the amount of fish   B.regular fish – eating

C.the kind of fish eaten      D.people of different areas

The passage is mainly about         .

      A.the changes in people’s diet

B.the effect of fish – eating on people’s health

C.the high percentage of heart disease in some countries

D.the daily fish consumption of people in different cultures

Humans are social animals. They live in groups all over the world. As these groups of people live apart form other groups, over the years and centuries they develop their own habits and ideas, which from different cultures. One important particular side of every culture is how its people deal with time.

Time is not very important in nonindustrial societies. The Nuer people of East Africa, for example, do not even have a word TIME that is in agreement with the abstract thing we call time. The daily lives of the people of such nonindustrial societies are likely to be patterned around their physical needs and natural events rather than around a time schedule(時間表) based on the clock. They cook and eat when they are hungry and sleep when the sun goes down. They plant crops during the growing seasons and harvest them when the crops are ripe. They measure time not by a clock or calendar(日歷), but by saying that an event takes place before or after some other event. Frequently such a society measures days in terms of "sleeps" or longer periods in terms of "moons". Some cultures, such as the Eskimos of Greenland measure seasons according to the migration(遷徙) of certain animals.

Some cultures which do not have a written language or keep written records have developed interesting ways of "telling time". For example, when several Australian aborigines(土著居民) want to plan an event for a future time, one of them places a stone on a cliff or in a tree. Each day the angle of the sun changes slightly. In a few days, the rays of the sun strike the stone in a certain way. When this happens, the people see that the agreed-upon time has arrived and the event can take place.

In contrast(成對比), exactly correct measurement of time is very important in modern, industrialized societies. This is because industrialized societies require the helpful efforts of many people in order to work. For a factory to work efficiently (well, quickly and without waste),for example, all of the workers must work at the same time. Therefore, they must know what time to start work in the morning and what time they may go home in the afternoon. Passengers must know the exact time that an airplane will arrive or depart. Students and teachers need to know when a class starts and ends. Stores must open on time in order to serve their customers. Complicated (復雜的) societies need clocks and calendars. Thus, we can see that if each person worked according to his or her own schedule, a complicated society could hardly work at all.

By saying "Humans are social animals",the author means________.

A. they live all over the world

B. they are different from other animals

C. they live in one place, district or country, considered as a whole

D. they are divided into many groups

Time is not very important in non-industrial societies, because peoplein those societies________.

A. don't have the word TIME in their languages

B. don't get used to using clocks and other timepieces

C. don't measure time in their daily lives around an exact time schedule

D. don't need to plan their daily lives around an exact time schedule

The Australian aborigines' way of"telling time" is based on________.

A. the change of the sun rays            B. the movement of the earth in relation to the sun

C. the position of the stone             D. the position of the tree or the cliff

Which of the following might be the best title for this passage?

A. Time and Culture                  B. The Measurment of Time

C. Time Schedule and Daily Life        D. Clock,Calendar and Society

Although the weathermen’s forecasts for a month ahead are only little better than guesswork, they are now making long-term forecasts into the next century with growing confidence. The main trend in the world’s climate in the coming years will, scientists say, be a predictable result of man’s activities.
At the start of the industrial revolution nearly two centuries ago, man set off a big experiment in planetary engineering. Unaware of what he was doing, he spared no thought for the consequences. Today the possible outcome is alarmingly clear, but the experiment is unstoppable. Within the lifetime of many of us, the Earth may become warmer than it has been for a thousand years. By the middle of this century it may be warmer than it has been since the last Ice Age.
A warmer climate may seem welcome, but it could bring many dangers: damages to crops in the world’s main food-producing areas, famine(饑荒),  economic instability, civil unrest and even war.
In the much longer term, melting of the great ice-caps of Greenland and Antarctica could raise sea-levels throughout the world. The average sea-level has already risen a foot since the turn of the last century, and if the ice-caps disappear completely, it would rise by nearly 200 feet. Complete melting might take many centuries, but even a small increase in sea-level would threaten low-lying parts of the world such as the Netherlands.
44. Long-term weather forecasts beyond the year 2050 may seem strange because ____.
A. none of us will be alive then
B. weathermen can even forecast next month’s weather correctly
C. weathermen can forecast much better than they used to
D. no one can stop engineering experiments
45. Weathermen believe that our future climate will be the direct result of ____.
A. the big scientific experiment       B. clever long-term forecasts
C. the melting of the ice-caps          D. planets changing course
46. One of the results of a warmer world climate could be ____.
A. an increase in food production
B. greater co-operation between countries
C. the death of millions of people from starvation
D. a reduction in the amount of oil we use
47. Scientists are fairly sure that by the year 2050, _______.
A. the sea-level will have risen obviously
B. there will have been the Third World War
C. most countries will have been flooded
D. the polar ice-caps will have melted completely
