In most towns today, you can see teenagers standing over electronic machines with flashing lights, shooting at spaceships from other planets and dropping bombs on strange monsters(惡魔). The machines have names like Space Warrior, Dark Invader and so on. It used to be believed that damage was done only to those strange visitors from outer space, but now it seems that they are striking back.

Many teenagers like electronic games so much that they can't stop playing. They spend hours tightly holding the joystick controls and constantly pressing buttons marked "fire". They develop pains on their fingers because of the constant pressure. They play and play that the pains have no chance to cure properly. The rapid wrist movement required to guide the spaceship across the screen causes another problem: the muscles of the wrist and arm become so inflamed and swollen(充血紅腫) that they press against the bones. This condition is what doctors now call "Space Warrior's Wrist". Other strange aches and pains are also likely to affect the elbows and shoulders.

Another even more alarming problem is shown by the case of a 17-year-old girl which was recently reported in the British Medical Journal. She had been playing various kinds of electronic games for more than two hours a day. Her father repaired games and machines and she could use the cassettes and systems in his workshop as often as she liked. One day, after playing a game called Dark Invader, she lost consciousness(知覺) and fell to the floor. Doctors who examined her found she was suffering from an unusual illness caused by lights flashing at a particular frequency.

Electronic games are found very popular with __________.

A. people living in towns                   B. students studying in high schools

C. girls working in their father's workshops     D. young people age about 13-19

"Space Warrior's Wrist" is caused by __________.

A. constantly pressing the buttons            B. rapidly moving across the screen

C. tightly holding the joystick controls        D. inflamed and swollen muscles of the wrist

The case of a 17-year-old girl given by the writer shows that the writer __________.

A. supports playing electronic games        B. feels very sorry for the girl

C. disagreed with young people's playing electronic games

D. feels happy about young people's poor health

From the passage we can conclude that playing electronic games is __________.

A. enjoyable and helpful to the study

B. exciting but harmful to the health and study

C. interesting but harmless to the eyes

D. amusing and satisfying

Forget hard work and perseverance. Getting ahead is as simple as tidying your desk.

According to a leading expert, having a cluttered environment reflects a cluttered mind, but the act of tidying up can help you be more successful. The advice comes from Jayne Morris, the resident "life coach" for NHS Online, who said it is no good just moving the mess around. In order to clear the mind, unwanted items must be thrown away to free your "inner world", she said.

Ms Morris, who claims to have coached celebrities(名流) to major business figures, said: “Clearing clutter from your desk has the power to transform your business. Why? Because clutter in your outer environment is the physical sign of all the clutter going on inside of you." Clearing clutter has a chain effect across your entire life, including your work. Having an untidy desk covered in clutter could be stopping you achieving the business success you want." She is sure cleaning up will be helpful even though some of history's biggest achievers lived and worked in messy conditions.

Churchill was considered untidy from a boy throughout his life, from his office to his artist's studio, and the lab where Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin was famously untidy.

Among the recommendations is that simply tidying a desk at work and an overflowing filing cabinet (陳列柜) will instantly have a positive impact on "your inner world. " Anything that is no longer used should not be put into storage but thrown away completely.

Keeping something in the loft, garage or other part of the house, does not help because it is still connected to the person "by tiny energetic lines", Ms Morris claims.

She said, "The things in your life that are useful to you, that add value to your life, that serve a current purpose are charged with positive energy that refreshes you and enriches your life. But the things that you don't ever use and don't need anymore have the opposite effect on your energy. Things that no longer fit or serve you use up your energy. "

1.The underlined word "cluttered" (in Para.2) is closest in meaning to _____________.

A.messy            B.brief             C.complex          D.aggressive

2.Which of the following statements does Ms Morris agree to?

A.Changing the position of staff frequently will help to build up a clear mind.

B.A tidy office will lead to a success in your business affairs in no time.

C.To have a free mind, we need to throw away unneeded items at times.

D.You can pack up your things in garage or loft to cheer you up.

3.According to Ms Morris, an untidy desk probably means that              .

A.you are quite a failure

B.you are in a messy mind

C.you are very tired to deal with it

D.you have achieved the business success

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Less untidy, more successful.

B.How to improve your inner world.

C.Cleaning up makes you less intelligent.

D.Being bigger achiever needs more effort.

To tell you the truth, I’m not interested in owning a cellular (網絡) phone. Except for use in an emergency (緊急情況), for ordinary cellular phone service is very expensive. How would I get help if I were in trouble or in danger? A good friend said about a product she thought would settle my problem. It’s the SOS phone—a cellular phone service designed for emergency use.

With the touch of a button, the SOS phone will connect me to a roadside emergency service, a 911 service or a trained SOS operator, 24 hours a day. If I ever need help. I know it’s just a phone call away.

By pressing the “Tow” button, I’ll bc connected with my emergency roadside service provider. Or, if I don’t have one, the SOS operator can suggest one to me and get in touch with them immediately.

The “911” button would connect me to 911 emergency service in my area------best of all, the call is completely free!

If I just want to call home to tell my husband and children something necessary, I can, by pressing the “Call” hutton, I’ll reach an operator. When I ask the operator to call home, I’ll be connected automatically (自動地). And because the Call Center has my 10 most-used phone numbers, I don’t even have to recite the numbers.

科目:高中英語 來源:2010-2011學年湖南省高三第一次月考英語卷 題型:閱讀理解

I am a writer. I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language—the way it can evoke(喚起) an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth. Language is the tool of my trade. And I use them all—all the Englishes I grew up with.

Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” English. But feel embarrassed to say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken”, as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness. I’ve heard other terms used, “limited English,” for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people’s perceptions(認識)of the limited English speaker.

I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother’s “limited” English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is ,because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

I started writing fiction in 1985. And for reasons I won’t get into today, I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with: the English she used with me, which for lack of a better term might be described as “broken”, and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(內在的) language, and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure: I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show; her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.

1. By saying “Language is the tool of my trade”, the author means that ______.

A. she uses English in foreign trade

B. she is fascinated by languages

C. she works as a translator

D. she is a writer by profession

2.The author used to think of her mother’s English as ______.

A. impolite   B. amusing

C. imperfect   D. practical

3. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3?

A. Americans do not understand broken English.

B. The author’s mother was not respected sometimes.

C. The author’ mother had positive influence on her.

D. Broken English always reflects imperfect thoughts.

4. The author gradually realizes her mother’s English is _____.

A. well structured   B. in the old style

C. easy to translate   D. rich in meaning

5. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The changes of the author’s attitude to her mother’s English.

B. The limitation of the author’s perception of her mother.

C. The author’s misunderstanding of “limited” English.

D. The author’s experiences of using broken English.
