Home security products give a homeowner peace of mind as well as the ability to protect loved ones and physical possessions around-the-clock.

_____

Having the right security products equipped in a home can get rid of home invasion, theft and injury. Home security products should be hidden somewhat and not out in the open for invaders to see. Products that protect one's home should also be linked to the local police department so that they can be notified in the event of an emergency or break-in.

_____

Security products are used for monitoring the home and the properties surrounding the home. Products are designed to warn the homeowner when invasion is taking place or someone is hidden around the property. Most systems are electronic or battery powered and some are linked with cables and satellites to keep a close watch on property.

_____

There are four main kinds of home security products. The first kind is home entry and invasion protection--used for setting up a high tech alarm system. The second is window and door alarms, helpful in warning the homeowner as to who is coming in and out of the house and certain rooms in the home. The third is to keep the outside of the home protected by signaling. The fourth is a combination of security gates, cameras connected to a DVR, bars for windows and doors as well as sliding door lock.

_____

One should consider the expense of equipping a complete security system. For most complete systems which include driveway alarms, cameras, and electronic keypads, many can cost from $100 to $10,000. The homeowner can equip individual security products based on the needs of the home and family to save money.

_____

Preventing invasion, theft and injury can save thousands of dollars if the home was broken into and items were stolen. Having home security products equipped can also reduce car and auto insurance moneys.

Research by sociologists Scott Coltrance Michele Adams looked at national survey data and found that when men increase their share of housework and childcare, their children are happier, healthier and do better at school. What’s more, when school-aged children do housework with their fathers, they get along better with their peers and have more friends. And they show more positive behaviors than if they do the same work with their mothers.“Because fewer men do housework than women,” said Adams, “when they share the work,it has more influence on children.” Fathers model “co-operative family partnerships”.

When men share housework and childcare, it turns out, their partners are happier.Wives of egalitarian(主張人人平等的)husbands, regardless of class, report the highest levels of marital(婚姻的)satisfaction and lowest rates of depression, and are less likely to see therapists(治療專家).They are also more likely to stay fit, since they probably have more time on their hands.

And the benefits for men are even greater.Men who share housework and childcare are healthier--physically and psychologically. They smoke less, drink less, and take recreational drugs less often. They are more likely to stay in shape and more likely to go to doctors for routine screenings, but less likely to use emergency rooms or miss work due to illness.

In both Europe and the United States,Dad is becoming the “fun parent”.He takes the kids to the park and plays soccer with the kids; she stays home.“What a great time we had with Dad!” the kids announce as they burst through the kitchen door to a lunch mum prepared.

A.She enjoys a high level of satisfaction at home.

C.She will have more free time.

D.She is more likely to gain weight.

3.Men who share housework and childcare

A.benefit physically more than psychologically

B.will take the place of women

C.are less likely to develop bad habits

D.don’t perform well at work

4.The passage is mainly about

A.the new pattern of family relations in Europe and the US

B.the benefits of men’s participation in housework and childcare

C.the problems of men’s participation in childcare

D.the important role husbands play in the family

科目:高中英語 來源:2011-2012學年江蘇省高三第一學期期中考試英語試題 題型:閱讀理解

“Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity,” said the American talk show host Oprah Winfrey. I’ve never watched her show, but when a self-made billionaire gives life advice it’s probably worth listening to.

Her point is that blind luck is very rare. You may have to be lucky to find a good job these days but that does not mean you should sit at home waiting for the opportunity to come to you. If you’re a Chinese, you may already be familiar with the tale of a farmer waiting by a tree stump(樹樁) for a rabbit to run out and break its neck.

A book by the UK psychologist Richard Wiseman, called The Luck Factor, argues we can all make ourselves luckier. It’s not about going to a temple to burn some incense(香) hopes that the gods will give you good fortune; it’s practical advice you can follow each day.

Wiseman conducted an experiment as part of his studies. First he divided volunteers into two groups; those who said they were lucky in life and those who said they were not. He gave everyone a newspaper and asked them to look through it to count how many photographs it had inside. On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs while the lucky people took just seconds. Why? On the second page of the newspaper, a command, “Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper,” was written in big letters. The unlucky people mostly did not spot the message.

It’s easy to compare this situation to a young person looking for jobs in a local paper. They might search so hard for one type of position that they miss an even better opportunity. People who are “lucky”, in fact, keep an open mind and don’t go through the same routine every day.

I first came to China in 2002 when it was considered a rather strange thing to do. Like many foreigners, my plan was to teach English for one year. Seven years later, and still here, I’ve had many great opportunities such as writing for newspapers and magazines. I did not dream these would have been possible. I’ve also never been sick, had an accident, got into a fight or had problems with the police. Coincidence? After reading about Professor Wiseman’s studies I think not.

As Wiseman advises, I usually trust my own judgment. Your friends and parents may give you advice based on rational thinking, but it’s important to consider how you feel about each choice you make. Your feeling acts as a warning for a potential problem.

Finally, try to turn bad luck into good. Even if you do fall down and break a leg, the time spent at home can be used wisely to study English.

  A. Make the best of a bad job.

2.What do you know about Oprah Winfrey?

  A. She became famous through her family background.

B. She is a British talk show host.

C. She became successful by her own effort.

D. She was very lucky and seldom suffered setbacks in her life.

3.The writer quoted the Chinese tale of a farmer in order to show __________.

  A. man can conquer nature

B. luck is in your own hand

C. bad luck can turn into good

D. you should not sit at home waiting for the opportunity to come to you
