                        How to overcome shyness

Does the thought of talking in front of people make you embarrassed? 1 Many people in the world suffer from mild to extreme shyness and are struggling to overcome it. Remember that breaking out from that shell doesn’t magically happen overnight. It takes time, effort, and of course, the desire to change. You' re on the right track by just reading this article 一 now let's keep going.

Figure out your triggers (誘因) . Do you become shy in front of new audiences? Or when surrounded by people you know and admire? Try to find out the thoughts that go through your head right before the shyness hits. 2 You’ re okay being around your family, right? Are they different from the strangers around you? Of course not 一 you just know them better and what's more, they know you.

Place your attention on others. For 99% of us,we become shy when we think if we speak up or stand out,we’ 11 embarrass ourselves. 3 When we stop focusing on ourselves,we stop worrying about our performance.

4 You have gotten used to hearing your own voice!Record yourself pretending to have conversations. Sounds ridiculous, sure, but you’ 11 notice patterns, when and why you drop off, etc. At the beginning you’ 11 feel like an actor, but it will become an old habit. Practice makes habits, you know!

Don’t compare yourself to others. The more you compare yourself to others, the more you will feel that you are not able to measure up. There is no use comparing yourself to anybody else. 5 Everyone else has his own confidence problems, too!

   A. If so,you are far from alone.

   B. Even if you do,do it realistically.

   C. Practice speaking clearly to yourself.

   D. Chances are not all situations make you shy.

   E. That's why it's important to focus on others.

   F. Practice placing yourself in not-so-comfortable situations.

   G. After all,you may never see them again,so who cares what they think about you?

Karla L. Miller writes a Washington Post advice column(專欄) on finding your way around the modern workplace. Each week she will answer one or two questions from readers.

Question: I'm Sam. I work part-time,paid hourly. There are only two employees: me and my boss. I receive no paid holidays or sick time,no health insurance, and orie week's paid vacation. For me,this job is just a job,and the salary I earn doesn't guarantee a 24/7 on-call mentality.

From almost the beginning,my boss has freely called me at home, called my personal cellphone, and emailed my personal account during my off-hours and vacation.

Five years later,it's still happening despite my having politely asked her several times not to contact me during my non-working hours.

Each time I ask,she apologizes and stops for a while, but always goes back to the behavior. I never take her phone calls on my cell, but she hasn't got my point.

The point is,it is never anything that can't wait until the next business day!I am ready to lose it.

Answer: If it won't cost you your job, call block and email filters(過濾器) are one easy path to inner peace.

Either she occasionally gets enough response from you to make it worth trying,or she can't help firing off questions on impulse(—時沖動) .

You could ask her, once and for all, whether she's OK with waiting for .responses.— in which case her afler-hours calls and emails will be answered the next business day 一 or whether she wants instant answers 一 in which case, you will be tracking the time you spend responding so you can be paid for it.

11. What,s Sam's problem?

   A. His salary is too low.

   B. His job is very challenging.

   C. His working hours are too long.

   D. His boss always contacts him during off-duty time.

   A. Upset. B. Disappointed.

   C. Calm. D. Excited.

13. What does the underlined part “she's out of bounds” in the text probably mean?

   A. What she's doing is acceptable.

   B. What she's doing is hard to explain.

   C. She's doing what she is not supposed to do.

   D. She has the right to do whatever she wants.

Four habits of highly emotionally intelligent people

It has increasingly become accepted that emotional intelligence (EI) is an important factor in our success and happiness, not only at work, but in our relationships and all areas of our lives. 1 Here are four habits that people with high El have:

   1. They focus on the positive. While not ignoring the bad news, emotionally intelligent people do not spend a lot of time and energy focusing on problems. 2 These people focus on what they are able to do and what is within their control.

   2. They surround themselves with positive people. People with a lot of El don't spend a lot of time listening to complainers. They are aware that those people are not helpful to them. 3 You can spot these folks as they tend to smile and laugh a great deal and attract other positive people. Their warmth, openness, and caring attitude let others look upon them as more trustworthy.

   3. They look for ways to make life more fun, happy, and interesting. Whether it is in their workplace,at home,or with friends, high El people know what makes them happy and look for opportunities to expand their enjoyment. 4 Therefore, they do whatever they can to brighten someone else's day.

   4. 5 People with high El are so busy thinking of possibilities in the future that they don't spend a lot of time worrying about things that didn't work out in the past. They take the learning from their past failures and apply it to their actions in the future.

   A. They are willing to let go of the past.

   B. They know how they can use their energy wisely.

   C. So what sets emotionally intelligent people apart?

   D. They receive pleasure and satisfaction from seeing others happy.

   E. So they always spend time with people that look at the bright side of life.

   F. Instead, they use the incident to create awareness of how to not let it happen again.

   G. Rather, they look at what is positive in a situation and look for solutions to a problem.
