Each Indian(印第安人) was supposed to keep his birth name until he was old enough to earn one for himself. But his playmates(游戲伙伴) would always give him a name of their own. No matter what his parents called him, his childhood friends would use the name they had chosen. Often it was not pleasing, such as Bow Legs or Bad Boy. But sometimes a name fit so well that the youngster found it difficult to shake it off. If he could not earn a better one from a war later, he could be stuck with a name like Bow Legs for the rest of his life.

The Indian earned his real name when he was old enough for his first fight against the enemy. His life name depended on how he acted during this first battle. When he returned from the war, the whole tribe would gather and observe the ceremony in which he would be given his name by the chief. If he had done well, he would get a good name. Otherwise he might be called Crazy Wolf or Man-Afraid-Of-a-Horse. So an Indian’s name told his record or described the kind of man he was.

A man was given many chances to improve his name, however. If in a later battle he was brave in fighting against the enemy, he was given a batter name. Some of our great fighters had as many as twelve names—all good and each better than the last.

An Indian’s names belonged to him for the rest of his life. No one else could use them. Even he himself could not give them away because names were assigned by the tribe, not the family. So no man could pass on his name unless the chief and the tribe asked him to do so.

Sometimes an Indian would be asked to give his name to a son who had performed a noticed deed. I know of only three of four times when this happened. It is the rarest honor for a person—the honor of assuming(承擔) his father’ name.

1.An Indian could be given the second name by__________.

A. his father       B. the enemy     C. the chief of the tribe    D. his childhood friends.

2.The greatest honor an Indian could earn was__________.

A. a victory in his first battle against the enemy.    B. a name given by the chief.

C. a ceremony to get his real name.              D. the right to use his father’ name.

3.If an Indian had more than ten names, it means that___________.

A. many people in the tribe liked him.            B. he was a great fighter.

C. he had a lot of friends.                      D. he had fought in fewer than ten battles.

4.Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage?

A. The names given by the playmates of an Indian were usually not pleasant.

B. The life name of an Indian was earned in battle.

C. An Indian could throw away his birth name when he was old enough to earn one for himself.

It is difficult for a visitor to India to avoid noticing the poverty, which surrounds him. The truth is that the land will yield only enough food to support two thirds of India's 480 million people. In a frank examination of Indian poverty, Ronald Segal in The Crisis of India observes, “Not only is the Indian economy overwhelmingly agricultural, it is less productive, land measure for land measure, than the agricultural economies of most other states too marry people struggle to wrest survival from the earth, and the earth yields far too little in return.”

“The stark consequence is that India produces only enough to feed a little less than two thirds of its population adequately. In a recent year, with a population of 438 million, food production reached 78 million tons. Together with three million tons of imported food, this permitted an average consumption of ounces a day, or ounces less than the essential minimum recommended nutritionists. If a diet necessary to sustain health was provided for as many people as possible, some 150 million people in India would have nothing whatsoever to eat. If everyone received the same food, 438 million people would eat less than two thirds of what their bodies required. As it is, a few are able to buy more food than they need, some can just afford the necessary diet, most live in constant—if manageable—want, and many ( no one knows how many, but they are numbered in tens of millions)exist in a state of starvation.”

And time is not on India's side. While production moves barely perceptibly, the population gallops along at something like 9,400,000 a year.

What will power your house in the future? Nuclear, wind, or solar power? According to scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, it might be leaves –but artificial ones.

Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known as photosynthesis (光合作用). Now researchers have found a way to imitate this seemingly simple process.

The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a special silicon chip (硅片) with catalysts (催化劑). Similar to natural leaves, it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuel cell (電池), which uses those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top of a house or beside the house.

Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries. “One can imagine villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology,” said Docera at a conference of the American Chemical Society.

An artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensive and unstable for practical use. The new leaf, by contrast, is made of cheap materials, easy to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies, Nocera showed that an artificial leaf prorotype (原型) could operate continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity.

The wonderful improvements come from Nocera’s recent discovery of several powerful new, inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy transformation (轉換) inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight. Right now, the new leaf is about 10 times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the device can run in whatever water is available; that is, it doesn’t need pure water. This is important for some countries that don’t have access to pure water.

With the goal to “make each home its own power station” and “giving energy to the poor”, scientists believe that the new application could be widely used in developing countries, especially in India and rural China.

1.Which of the following order correctly shows how the artificial leaf is used to produce electricity?

a. artificial leaves split water into hydrogen and oxygen

b. the hydrogen and oxygen gases are stored in a fuel cell

c. the artificial leaves are put in water

d. the fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity

A. cbad  B. cabd  C. bcad   D. cadb

2.Which of the following statements about new artificial leaves is TRUE according to the article?

A. They are inexpensive but unstable.

B. They are as efficient at carrying out photosynthesis as natural leaves.

C. They can work only in pure water.

D. They need several catalysts to help them work efficiently.

3.The aim of the scientists at MIT in developing the new artificial leaves is to         .

A. build-up more power stations in the world

B. provide cheaper energy for developing countries

C. offer people in developing countries access to pure water

D. gain a deeper understanding of the photosynthesis process

4.What is the main point of the article?

A. Introduction to the history of artificial leaves.

B. An invention copying photosynthesis.

C. Giving energy to the poor.

D. A mixture of water power and solar energy.
