There’s been a lot of talk about white-and-blue collar workers, and you may have even heard of gold collar workers, but lately a new color of collar is making its way into China’s urban vernacular(土話)—green. Green collars say no when work is life and life is work. They choose to get out of the fast lane(車道), and explore new ways of living “green”.

Living green doesn’t mean someone is working as an environmentalist, biologist or scientist. Instead it is more of a lifestyle choice. A typical green collar is well educated like a white-collar but physically tough like a blue-collar, likely born in the 70s or 80s of the last century and living in one of China’s big cities, with a monthly income well above 5,000 yuan (about US $700).

The life of a green collar may go something like this; Turn off the mobile phone after work, eat only healthy food rich in vitamins, go on hikes every weekend, and like to help the underprivileged.

Green collars even have their own club. In Beijing, the Green Collar Club is for people who share a “be happy, healthy and helpful” spirit. The club often holds charity parties and uses the donations for environmental protection and poverty relief(擺脫貧困)projects in China.

“They are successful in their careers, but do not miss the pleasures in life. They have a lot of money, but do not fall slave to it.” said Zuo Shiguang, one of the founding members of the club.

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A.Differences between white-and-blue collars and green collars.

B.The increasing awareness of environmental protection.

C.New trends of life in China’s big cities.

       D.The lifestyle of green collars.

A.they have a large income to use

B.they refuse to live an unhealthy life

C.they spend a lot of money and time in the open

3.Green collars will_______after work.

       A.prefer to be left alone

       B.have fun with old friends

C.think nothing about work and more

D.do a lot of extra work at home

Perhaps you have never heard of Katherine Lawes.Katherine was the wife of Lewis Lawes, warden (監獄長) at Sing Sing Prison from 1920 to 1941.In these 21 years he made many reforms --- and an important part of his success was due to his wife Katherine.

Katherine took seriously the idea that the prisoners are human beings ,worthy of attention and respect .She regularly visited inside the walls of Sing Sing. She encouraged the prisoners, took things to them and spent time listening to them. Most importantly, she cared about them. And as a result, they cared deeply about her.

Then one night in October of 1937, news was "telegraphed" between the prison cells that Katherine had been killed in an accident. The prisoners asked the warden to allow them to attend her funeral. He agreed to their strange request and a few days later the south gate of Sing Sing swung slowly open.Hundreds of men who had committed almost every crime imaginable marched slowly out of the prison, later gathered again at the gate and returned to their cells. There were so many that they proceeded unguarded. But no one tried to escape. If he had, the others might have killed him immediately. So devoted were they to Katherine Lawes, the woman who daily walked into Hell to show the men a piece of Heaven.

Katherine' s strength was to see the men less as prisoners and more as individuals.Thomas Moore once said, "We can only treat badly those things or people whose souls we show no respect for."

1.When Katherine's husband was the warden at Sing Sing Prison, she did the following things EXCEPT_______________.

A.encouraging the prisoners             B.visiting the prison houses

A.Because Katherine was the wife of the warden.

B. Because Katherine didn't look down upon them and cared about them.

C.Because Katherine made reforms in the prison.

D.Because Katherine had been killed by one of them.

3.Whom does the underlined part “the others” refer to?

A.The policemen at the funeral.  B.The guards.

C. The other prisoners.           D.The policemen from other prisons.

4.The best title of this passage is_________.

A.To Honor Their Souls         B.Reforms at Sing Sing Prison

C.To Meet Their Requirement   D.  Katherine Lawes' s Life

Slow parenting means parenting children in the contact of nature without any interference (干預) of materialistic influence. We can also term it as “self-raising”. In slow parenting children are allowed to do what they think proper and parents just keep a watch over the child. Curiosity of the child leads to exploring and discovering things. Parents provide little help only when it’s too necessary, otherwise keep themselves away from the child and just have a look on him/her: This brings about a feeling of self-dependency and they are encouraged to solve their problems.

This is a natural way of learning. When a child is left to learn in a natural environment, the child’s natural development takes place. Influence of any materialistic way doesn’t let the mind develop naturally. Watching TV, playing video games or joining classes of dance, swimming or any other sports will not let the mind develop naturally.

Here creativity of their mind is developed. They explore ideas. The logic behind this is that the kids of animals learn by nature, so can our kids. So let our children play in the garden, to watch flowers, plants, birds, butterflies and other gifts of nature. In the classes of dance, swimming etc. their creativity is influenced and their natural creativity is suppressed (壓制). In these classes they are overburdened and can’t train their creativity. So let them play in the open air or garden without any burden instead of joining classes.

Generally parents give toys to their children and explain how to operate them. But those parents who believe in slow parenting give toys and observe how the children are managing them. Their skill to learn and understand comes out. Maybe the process is slow, but it will be their exploration, which will make them self-dependent, and self-capable to learn.

1.In slow parenting, parents ______.

A.set limits to what their children do

B.keep a close watch over their children

C.give the whole directions to what their children do

D.give their children freedom to do what they think proper

2. What is the main advantage of slow parenting according to the passage?

A.Arousing children’s curiosity.

B.Helping children to be independent.

C.Making children interested in exploring nature.

D.Keeping children away from materialistic influence.

3.We can infer from the third paragraph that______.

A.children should join some classes

B.slow parenting should be done in a logical way

C.exploring nature is a good way of slow parenting

D.children can’t learn by nature like the kids of animals

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.Slow parenting and its advantages.

B.Different parenting styles.

C.The requirements of slow parenting.

D.The author’s opinion on slow parenting.
