It was 7:00 am in Kyoto, Japan, and the taxi company had just called a second time to say they couldn’t find my house. Once again I spelt out directions even a blind person could follow. I glanced impatiently at my watch, and waited. Only two hours remained until my flight left—and it was an hour and a half trip to the airport.

Outside, heavy rains were pouring down. My house was so far north in the city that buses pass only here times a day.

The telephone rang again. “Terribly sorry,” began the man at the taxi company. Then I realized that the taxi company, flooded with calls, could only offer in-city runs. I had heard this happens when the weather gets bad. I shouted into the phone that I had a plane to catch and I would meet the taxi outside my house.

Standing in the wind-driven rain, I looked up and down the road. No taxi. A car went by, the driver and passenger staring at the crazy foreigner in the downpour.

Finally a white car appeared and pulled to a stop. A young man threw open the door, waving for me to get in. Shaking with cold and anger, I climbed in.

In the most polite Japanese, the man said he was called Mike, with who I had spoken three times that morning. He had left his post in the office and raced here in his personal car. He apologized again, but didn’t explain why a taxi would not pick me up. Delivering me straight to the airport, he refused the 2,000 yen I pressed into his hand.

A few hours later, as the storm-delayed 727 took off, I opened the newspaper. On the second page my eyes caught the headline of a short article: Taxi Strike Begins This Morning in Kyoto.

1.Why did the writer call a taxi early in the morning?

A. He wanted to catch a plane.

B. He as unable to find the airport.

C. There were few taxis in town.

D. All the buses stopped because of the rain.

2.What was the reason for the taxi company not being able to pick him up?

A. More people were riding in taxis on rainy days.

B. The writer didn’t give the correct address.

C. The taxi drivers refused to work.

D. The taxi drivers didn’t like to drive long distance.

3.The writer got to the airport ____________.

A. by riding in Mike’s car from the taxi company

B. with the help of Mike from the post office

C. by getting a lift in a passing car

D. with the help of a taxi driver sent by his company

4.We can learn from the text that the driver was _____________.

A. quick-minded at taking action

B. a self-employed driver

C. unwilling to drive to the airport

D. warm-hearted toward people

請認真閱讀下列短文,從短文后各題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出最佳選項。

Everyone procrastinates. We put things off because we don’t want to do them, or because we have too many other things on our plates.Putting things off – big or small – is part of being human. But procrastination does have consequences. When your procrastination leaves you feeling discouraged, it is time to take action, and one of the best ways to get rid of it is to make an un-schedule。

An un-schedule is a weekly calendar of all the ways in which your time is already accounted for.You consider not only your timed commitments such as classes and meetings, but also your untimed activities such as meals, exercise, time with friends, and the like.Once you have made your un-schedule, you may be able to see your time is often filled with more activities than you realize, for instance, that you really don’t have five hours to spend writing on the night before your paper is due.Procrastinators’ views of time tend to be unrealistic, and the un-schedule can help you outline a realistic plan.By planning accordingly, you will not only get a better night’s sleep, you may also end up with a better paper.

The un-schedule might also be a good way to get started on a larger project, such as a term paper or an honors paper. You may think that you have “all semester” to get the writing done, but if you really map out how much time you have available to write on a daily and weekly basis, you will see that you need to get started sooner, rather than later. In addition, the un-schedule may reveal especially busy weeks or months, which will help you budget time for long-term projects.

Perhaps most importantly, the un-schedule can help you examine how you spend your time. You may be surprised at how much time you spend watching television, and decide to make a change. It’s especially important that you build time for fun activities into your un-schedule.Otherwise, you will procrastinate in order to steal time for relaxation.

You can also use the un-schedule to record your progress towards your goal.Reward yourself for your small successes.Seeing what you’ve achieved will help you reinforce (強化) the productive behavior, and you will feel more motivated in the following process.

As you explore ways to conquer procrastination, don’t expect overnight transformation. You developed the habit over a long time; you aren’t going stop magically. But you can change the behavior, bit by bit.If you start to make an un-schedule now, you will eventually develop new habits.

1.From Paragraph 2, we can know that procrastinators __________.

A.usually have sleeping problems

B.tend to be unrealistic in daily life

C.spend more time in doing exercise

D.often fail to notice untimed activities

2.Which of the following statements best reflects an un-schedule?

A.“Now I have more time for fun.”

B.“I can start my big project later.”

C.“I’ll treat myself to a movie for my progress.”

D.“I’m going to have more time to finish my paper.”

3.According to the writer, people need to make an un-schedule because of their _

A.interests in doing things differently

B.determination to try out new things

C.inability to manage time properly

D.lack of concentration on a project

Whether you’re eating at a fancy restaurant or dining in someone’s home, proper table manners are likely to help you make a good impression.According to a US expert,Emily Post,“All rules of table manners are made to avoid ugliness.”

While Henry Hitchings of the Los Angeles Times admits that good manners can reduce social conflict,he points out that mostly their purpose is protective – they turn our natural warrior like selves into more elegant ones.

So where did table manners come from?

In medieval England,a writer named Petrus Alfonsi took the lead to urge people not to speak with their mouths full. And King David I of Scotland also proposed that any of his people who learned to eat more neatly be given a tax deduction (減除).

Disappointingly, that idea never caught on.It was during the Renaissance, when there were real technical developments, opinions of correct behavior changed for good. “None of these was more significant than the introduction of the table fork,” wrote Hitchings.“Gradually,as forks became popular, they brought the new way of eating, making it possible, for instance,to consume berries without making one’s fingers dirty.”

Forks were introduced to Britain in 1608 and 25 years later, the first table fork reached America. Yet while most of the essentials (基本要素) are the same on both sides of the Atlantic, there are a few clear differences between what’s normal in the US and what holds true in the UK.For example,in the US,when food needs cutting with a knife, people generally cut a bite, then lay aside the knife and switch the fork to their right hand. Then they pick up one bite at a time.By contrast,Britons keep the fork in the left hand and don’t lay the knife down.

Though globalization has developed a new, simpler international standard of table manners, some people still stick with the American cut and switch method. The Los Angeles Times noted,“They are hanging on to a form of behavior that favors manners above efficiency.”

1.What does the story mainly talk about?

A. The importance of proper table manners.

B. The development of table manners in Western countries.

C. Some unwritten rules of table manners in the US and UK.

D. Differences between American and British table manners.

2.The underlined phrase “caught on” in the passage probably means ______.

A. worked in practice

B. became popular

C. drew attention

D. had a positive effect

3.Which of the following events influenced people’s table manners most according to the article?

A. The introduction of forks.

B. The tax deduction policy.

C. The rise of the Renaissance.

D. Petrus Alfonsi’s efforts in promoting table manners.

4.What can we conclude from the article?

A. British and American table manners are completely different from each other.

B. American people pay more attention to their table manners than British people do.

C. With globalization, the American cut and switch method has been abandoned in the US.

D. British people’s way of using a knife and fork may be more efficient than American people’s.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學年遼寧東北育才學校高二上階段考2英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Greenspace facilities (設施) are contributing to an important degree to the quality of the city environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea. At present it is generally accepted, although more as a self-proved statement than on the base of a closely reasoned scientific proof. Recognizing the importance of greenspaces in the city environment is a first step on the right way, this does not mean, however, that enough details are known about the functions of greenspace in towns and about the way in which people are using these spaces. As to this subject I shall within the scope (范圍) of this lecture, enter into one aspect only, namely the recreative function of greenspace facilities.

The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation (娛樂) which for many years has been used in town and country planning, has in my opinion resulted in more attention for forms of recreation far from home, while there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the direct neighborhood of the home. We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working, is used for activities at and around home. So it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street door of the house. The city environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more required activities can also have recreative aspect.

The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district, if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets because the risks of traffic are too great, if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather, in short, if you only feel yourself at home after the street door of your house is closed after you.

1.The importance of greenspaces in the city environment _____.

A. is still unknown

B. is paid little attention to

C. is accepted on the base of scientific proof

D. has been recognized

2.For many years town and country planning has _____.

A. brought living areas and places of entertainment close together

B. separated recreation facilities far from home

C. improved recreative possibilities in the neighborhood

D. enabled people to reach the best standard of living

3.According to the author, greenspaces should be designed _____.

A. to reduce the number of recreative activities

B. to attract more and more people

C. for people to use more conveniently

D. for people to do recreative activities at the street door of the house

4.The main idea of this passage is that _____.

A. attention must be paid to the improvement of recreation

B. greenspace facilities should be used better to improve the quality of life

C. the city environment is providing more recreative activities

D. we should try our best to raise our living standard
