We can't tell a contestant is winning because he is really talented or because there is no comparison

Hunan Satellite TV is losing its leading position? There's a reason for saying this. In 2012, the reality talent show, the Voice of China, on the Zhejiang Television became the most popular program in China.

The reason for its popularity was really because of its excellent quality?

The administrative department really contributed a lot in the popularity of the Voice of China. In the past, there were no other draft shows(選秀節目) ranked as high as Super Girl and Super Boy. Even though there were some draft shows which seemed to share the popularity, it never turned out true. All the other draft shows were shadowed by the ones on Hunan TV. One example was that since draft shows of Hunan TV were broadcast on Friday night, the draft shows of other stations were shifted to Saturday or Sunday. However, Hunan TV didn't get their permission for broadcasting shows in 2012.

And if this were not bad enough, SARFT did a great favor for it. SARFT issued a regulation, saying that all draft shows should be broadcast after 10:30 pm at night. Zhejiang TV declared long before the regulation that since was “no audition(海選), no PK, no rise in rank, no voting, no champion”, its program was never a draft show. So, in 2012, all the opponents of Zhejiang TV had to broadcast their draft shows after 10:30 pm while the Voice of China was permitted to be broadcast in prime time.

If you really think about it, there's no essential difference between a draft show and the Voice of China. It also selected people from all over the country, how did they say this was different from a draft show? No PK, really? PK doesn't mean one versus one! A team versus a team is called PK too. And “no rise in rank” is just a switch of concepts because at the end of every game, some left the stage and some stayed. If there was really “no champion”, how come there was only one “good voice of China” at the final round? All these were rising in rank, in disguise(隱性).

Under such circumstances, the Voice of China even got praise. We are not saying that it is not a good show; we are saying that there's regret about the show since it had no opponent.

Steve and Yaser first met in their chemistry class at an American university. Yaser was an international student from Jordan. He wanted to learn more about American culture and hoped that he and Steve would become good friends. At first, Steve seemed very friendly. He always greeted Yaser warmly before class. Sometimes he offered to study with Yaser. He even invited Yaser to have lunch with him. But after the term was over, Steve seemed distant. The two former classmates didn’t see each other very often at school. One day Yaser decided to call Steve. Steve didn’t seem very interested in talking to him. Yaser was hurt by Steve’s change of attitude. “Steve said we were friends,” Yaser complained, “and I thought friends were friends forever.” Yaser was a little confused.

As a foreigner, he doesn’t understand the way Americans view friendship. Americans use the word “friend” in a very general way. They may call both casual acquaintances(相識的人;熟人) and close companions(伙伴) “friends”. These friendships are based on common interests. When the shared activity ends, the friendship may fade(逐漸消失). Now as Steve and Yaser are no longer classmates, their “friendship” has changed. In some cultures friendship means a strong lifelong bond between two people. In these cultures friendships develop slowly, since they are built to last. American society is one of rapid change. Studies show that one out five American families moves every year. American friendships develop quickly, and they may change just quickly as well. People from the United States may at first seem friendly. Americans often chat easily with strangers. But American friendliness is not always an offer of true friendship. After an experience like Yaser’s , people who’ve been in this country for only a few months may consider Americans to be fickle(易變的). Learning how Americans view friendship can help non-Americans avoid misunderstandings. It can also help them make friends in the American way.

1.According to the passage, ________made Yaser a little confused.

A. Steve’s inviting him to dinner

B. Steve’s cold attitude

C. Steve’s studying with him

D. Steve’s misunderstanding him

2.We can learn from the passage that_____.

A. Americans use the word “friend” in a very special way and like to develop a close friendship

B. American friendliness is always an offer of true friendship and is of great value

C. Americans think the friendship will last for ever, even though the shared activity ends

D. Americans always base their friendships with others on common interests

3.In Paragraph 2, the underlined word “they” refers to “_______”.

A. American friendships

B. American families

C. People from the United States

D. misunderstandings

4.This passage mainly tells us_____.

A. that people should not make friends with Americans.

Japanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressures from their parents to do well in school. Most students are always being told by their parents to study harder so that they can have a wonderful life. Though this may be good ideas for those very bright students, it can have very bad results for many students who are not quick enough at learning.

Unfortunately, a number of students killed themselves. Others are after comfort in using drugs. Some do bad things with trouble-makers and turn to crime. Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have disappointed their parents. Such students feel that they are less important and leave school before they have finished their study.

It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers’ work to help their children. To make matters worse, a lot of parents send their children to special schools called juku-cram schools. These schools are open during the evening and on weekends, and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams. They do not try to educate students in any real sense of the real world. It thus comes as a shock to realize that almost three quarters of the junior or high school population attend these cram schools.

Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bag. Child psychologists now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society. They regard the rules as being harmful to the development of each student. They believe that no sense of moral values is developed and that students are given neither guidance nor training in becoming good citizens.

1.A lot of Japanese students are unhappy at school because_______.

A. they work very hard

B. they find they can't do well at school

C. they feel unimportant

D. they are under too much pressure

2.Because of their failure at school, some students take drugs to .

A. kill themselves B. seek comfort

C. disappoint their parents D. make trouble

3.In juku-cram schools students_________.

A. are taken good care of by the teachers

B. feel no pressure

C. are trained to pass exams

D. can learn a lot of useful things

4.In ordinary Japanese schools,______________ .

A. there are strict rules

B. students feel safe

C. students can do anything

D. learning is not important

In a movie, a woman reads a storybook to her friend’s daughter. As they approach the last page, she reads, “… and Cinderella and the prince lived happily ever after.” She closes the book and looks at the young girl, adding, “ You know, things don’t always happen like this in real life, I just think you should know that now.”

We were all raised on fairy tales with glass slippers, brave princes and magic! It didn’t take too long to realize that stories like that aren’t necessarily true. In real life, you learn that glass slippers are really uncomfortable, no prince is perfect and magic doesn’t always work.

So what do you do when the way you planned things is not the way they turned out?

Know that parts of your fairy tale have already been written, and sadly, there’s not much you can do about those first few chapters. You didn’t get the best start. Your trust was unexpectedly betrayed (背叛). You didn’t get the job. Whatever falls and failures happened in your past, there’s still more to the story.

Your life has a lot of contributors (投稿者), and you are the editor-in-chief. You take what’s there and create the masterpiece (杰作). All the good pages and the bad can come together to make a beautiful adventure.

When you find yourself wishing your life was more like the fairy tales, remember that in some ways it already is. There will be dragons, bad witches, great romances, winding roads and friends to help you along the way. Live your life carefully and positively as if you are writing a long story. Whether it’s a comedy, tragedy or a little of both, the pen is in your hand. How it ends is all up to you.

1.According to the first paragraph, we know the woman is __________.

iPhone owners are vainer and spend more on clothes and grooming (儀容) than those who have BlackBerrys and Android phones, new research claims.

BlackBerry owners earn the most and are more likely to have long-term relationships, while people with Android handsets are most creative and the best cooks.

The study, carried out by TalkTalk Mobile, surveyed 2,000 owners of the three major smartphone brands to determine whether the choice of handset was an extension of their personality. The study rated users in various walks of life using a point scoring system including personalities, daily habits and the type of industries they work in.

Other results from the study found that people with an iPhone are more image conscious and generally rate themselves more attractive than those with other handsets. They are most likely to describe themselves as adventurous, bright and are most likely to work in media, publishing and education. They also believe their boss rates them highly. Apple owners also tend to have done more travelling and are the most active on social media sites.

BlackBerry owners were found to be the least punctual, but despite putting in the least hours at work they are the most active phone user — sending more texts and making more calls in the average day than any other phone user. They are more social and have more friends overall. They also earn nearly two and a half thousand pounds a year more than other smartphone owners, with an average salary of $27,406. BlackBerry users classed themselves so loud and mainly work in the health, finance or property sectors. They were also found to drink more tea and coffee each day than any other phone user.

Android owners were found to watch more TV than others and drink the most alcohol — consuming more in an average week than iPhone and BlackBerry drinkers. They have the most jobs in engineering, the government and public services and environmental services. They have the best manners and are more shy and relaxed than their counterparts.

Dan Meader, Director of Mobile at TalkTalk, said, “Many of us have our mobile phones on us almost constantly so they do become an extension of us in many ways. It’s interesting to see then how the choice in handset may reflect different aspects of personality and the results do show some unusual differences.”

1.The underlined words “image conscious” (Paragraph4) mean “caring about ________”.

A. income B. appearance

C. social media D. interpersonal relationships

2. What were Android users found to be like?

A. Loud. B. Brave. C. Polite. D. Confident.

3. Dan Meader may agree that the kind of mobile phone we use ________.

A. will decide the way we live our life

B. can be a window into the lives we lead

C. can change our personalities gradually

D. has become the most important part of our life

4.How is the text organized?

閱讀表達。閱讀下面短文,并根據題目要求用英語回答問題(請注意問題后的字數要求)。

How do you keep a library when you’ve got no room for your books? With rising rents and record numbers of young people having to move with their parents, it’s clear that we are a moving generation.

As a student in Leeds I moved three times in four years; in London it was seven times in three years. Regularly having to load our possessions into laundry bags and boxes takes a lot of our finance and energy, but the effect on our book collections is rarely considered.

Keeping a collection of beloved books in a damp flat with no shelves, which you’ll probably have to move out of in six months’ time, is a challenge. Deciding which books to keep and which to reject becomes increasingly difficult. Do you hold on to the books you know you’ll reread or do you keep the to-be-read pile intact (完好無損的) ?

Donating books to a charity shop or local school may be virtuous, but when you haven’t had time to read them since your last move, it becomes depressing. There’s a copy of Much Ado About Nothing I’ve been moving around with for nearly a decade because it is the only piece of Shakespeare in the marketplace.

“Just buy a Kindle!” you might argue — but for many people, books are more than just books. They offer us an emotional connection to the past, to the person who gave them to us. They are a way to brighten up a dark flat, they are a link to home; they are the hardest thing to move and the most enjoyable thing to unpack.

So what if you are already facing your second move this year and can’t bear the thought of pensioning off more of your beloved books? You start reading more. Read all the books in your current bedroom and work out if they’re worth the trip; give away as many books as you can; leave books with trusted friends to be reclaimed at a later point. Start looking at your books creatively.

1.Why has the moving generation appeared? (no more than 15 words)

2.While moving, why do people often ignore their book collections? (no more than 10 words)

3.What makes the author keeps a copy of Much Ado About Nothing? (no more than 10 words)

4.What does the underlined phrase pensioning off in the last paragraph mean? (no more than 3 words)

5.What would you do with your books when you have to move? Give a persuasive reason. (no more than 25 words)
