Surfing: It’s Not Just for Boys Any More
If you asked high school girls to name their favorite sports, most would probably say basketball or

boy thing? Some people     2     Most certainly not.
I started surfing about five years ago and     3     in love with the sport on the very first day. Riding
that first     4     was the best feeling I had ever experienced.
When I try to    5   surfing with other things, I find it very difficult because, in my       6    , there's
nothing like it. It  involves (牽涉)  body,      7    , and soul. There's sand between my toes and cool,
salt water all    8     the US. The feeling I get when I'm surfing across that    9     , becoming one with
the   10   is like I'm weightless.
The one thing I can   11    from surfing and not any other sport is endless challenge (挑戰). You can

ever master. The variations of surfing styles are wonderful. Some surfers are free and flowing; others are
very aggressive(活躍有力的)  and     13     . All of these things attract me to surfing and make it     14
from any other sport.
I've    15      to tell every girl I know to do something that people don't think girls can do. It's part of
being human to advance to new      16     . So shouldn't it be expected that girls should step up and
start     17     the limits of things boys and men used to dominate(主宰) ?
     There're women    18
side by side with the President of our country, so why not stand side by side with the boys    19     the
football team or out in the water surfing? Give girls a chance to    20    , and they will.

The family sphere (范圍) used to be defined by its isolation from the public realm.
There was the public male realm (領域)of "rational accomplishment" and cruel competition,
and the private female and child-rearing sphere of home, intuition (直覺) and emotion. The
private realm was supposed to be isolated firm the realities of adult life. For both better and
worse, television and other electronic media tend to break down the difference between
those two worlds. The membrane around the family sphere is much more permeable
(可滲透的). TV takes public events and transforms them into dramas that are played
out in the privacy of our living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms.
Parents used to be the channel through which children learned about the outside world.
They could decide what to tell their children and when to tell it to them. Since children
learn to read in stages, books provide a kind of natural screening process, where adults
can decide what to tell and not tell children of different reading abilities. Television
destroyed the system that separated adult from child knowledge and separated
information into year-by-year slices for children of different ages. Instead, it presents the
same information directly to children of all ages, without going through adult filters.
So television presents a real challenge to adults. While a parent can read a newspaper
without sharing it with children in the same room, television is accessible to everyone in
that space. And unlike books, television doesn't allow us to flip (翻轉) through it and see
what's coming up. We may think we're giving our children a lesson in science by having
them watch the Challenger take off, and then suddenly they learn about death, disaster and
adult mistakes.
Books allow adults to discuss privately what to tell or not tell children. This also allows
parents to keep adult material secret from children and keep their secret keeping secret.
Take that same material and put it on The Today Show and you have 800,000 children
hearing the very things the adults are trying to keep from them. "Television takes our kids
across the globe before parents give them permission to cross the street."
More importantly, children gradually learn that adults are worried and anxious about
being parents. Actually, television has also places families under a lot of stress.

Silence is unnatural to man. He begins life with a cry and ends it in stillness. In between be does all he can
to make a noise in the world, and be fears silence more than anything else. Even his conversation is an attempt
to prevent a fearful silence. If he is introduced to another person, and is number of pauses occur in the
conversation, he regards him-self as a failure,a worthless person, and is full of envy of the emptiest- headed
chatterbox (喋喋不休的人).He knows that ninety nine percent of human conversation means no more than the
buzzing of a fly
, but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure
(蠟塑人像).
The aim of conversation is not. For the most part, to communicate ideas; it is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are, it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz; there is even a buzz that is as annoying as the
continuous noise made by a mosquito (蚊子). But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a quiet
person. Most buzzing, fortunately, is pleasant to the ear, and some of it is pleasant even to the mind. He would
be a foolish man if he waited until he had a wise thought to take part in the buzzing with his neighbors.
Those who hate to pick up the weather as a conversational opening seem to me not to know the reason
why human beings wish to talk. Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of learning anything
new. Some of them are content if they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears,
though they have nothing to tell them except that they have seen two or three new plays or that they had food
in a Swiss hotel. At the end of an evening, during which they have said nothing meaningful for a long time.
They just prove themselves to be successful conservationists.

A. exchange ideas
B. prove their value
C. achieve success in life

A. the noise of an insect
B. a low whispering sound
C. meaningless talks
D. the voice of a chatterbox
3.  According to the passage, people usually talk to their neighbors _____.
A. about whatever they have prepared
B. about whatever they want do
C. in the hope of learning something new
D. in the hope of getting on well
4.  What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A. To discuss why people like talking about weather.

C. To persuade people to stop making noises.
D. To explain why people keep talking.

More than 50 years ago the idea of disabled people doing sport was never heard of. But when the
yearly Games for the disabled were started at Stoke Mandeville, England in 1948 by Sir Ludwig
Guttmann, the situation began to change.
Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who had been driven to England in 1939 from Nazi Germany, had been asked
by the British government to set up an injuries centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital near London. His ideas about treating injuries included sport for the disabled.
In the first Cames just two teams of injured soldiers took part. The next year, 1949, five teams took
part. From those beginnings, things have developed fast. Teams now come from abroad to Stoke
Mandeville every year. In 1960 the first Olympics for the disabled were held in Rome, in the same place as the normal Olympic Games. Now, every four years the Olympic Games for the disabled are held, if
possible, in the same place as the normal Olympic Games, although they are organized separately. In other years Games for the disabled are still held at Stoke Mandeville. In the 1984 wheelchair Olympic Cames,
1 064 wheelchair athletes (運動員) from about 40 countries took part. Unfortunately, they were held at
Stoke Mandeville and not in Los Angeles, along with the other Olympics.
The Cames have been a great success in helping the progress of international friendship and
understanding, and in proving that being disabled does not mean you can't enjoy sport. One small source (來源 )  of disappointment for those who organize and take part in the Games, however, has been the
unwillingness of the International Olympic Committee (委員會)  to include disabled events at the Olympic Games for the able-bodied. Perhaps a few more years are still needed to persuade those fortunate enough not to be disabled that their disabled fellow athletes should be included.
1. The first Cames for the disabled were held      after Sir Ludwig Guttmann arrived in England.
A.40 years
B. 21 years
C. 10 years
D. 9 years
2. Besides Stoke Mandeville, surely the Games for the disabled were once held in        .
A. New York
B. London
C. Rome
D. Los Angeles
3.  This text tells us that Sir Ludwig Guttmann          .
A. is an early organizer of the Games for the ablebodied
B. is welcomed by the British government
C. is an injured soldier
D. is from England
4. From the passage, we may know that the writer is             .
A. one of the organizers of the Cames for the disabled
B. a disabled person who once took part in the Games
C. against holding the Games for the disabled    .
D. in favour of holding the Cames for the disabled

Every family with kids has seen its share of arguments, shouting and complaining. It turns out that all that conflict serves an important purpose in the development of children.Saying "no" followed by a bad temper,
just may be an unavoidable part of growing up. And that's a good thing. These are the first steps toward independence. Even young children have to challenge their parents sometimes.

     Studies have shown the following:
Although stressful, conflict is beneficial for children.
Learning to manage conflict is necessary for a child's development.
Conflicts during the preschool years occur because children desire more attention than parents can or
should give.
If you understand why conflict occurs,it can minimize the conflicts between you and your children.
Conflict is a child's attempt to develop a sense of self and how he or she learns to express his or her needs and ideas.Parents develop and drive this independence by putting children to the outside world both
formally and informally.
Conflict can grow out of different opinions or might just be a way to blow off steam (發脾氣). In rare
situations, constant conflict between parents and children can indicate a deeper emotional problem.
Consult your doctor if this seems to be your situation.
It's important to offer your child choices, which should be determined by age and developmental level.
The more responsible a child is, the more choices he or she gets in reward. You can threaten your child
with punishment, but often offering a choice will better improve angry situations.nConsequences and
rewards should have some meaning to your child.
Often a child's adverse (敵對的) reaction when he or she hears the word "no" can be avoided by
giving the child an explanation as to why you have refused his or her request.
