Gmail tmned five years old this week. It's somewhat amazing to think we've only had it since 2004; Gmail changed the webmail game forever by offering features we now take for granted: a streamlined interface (界面]) , powerful search, pioneering use ofAjax and a then-huge 1 GB of mailbox space.“You'll never need to delete another message " was how Google described it at the time.
Back then, I was still making do with Hotmail. But its clumsy interface and tiny amount of storage space made the decision to move on an easy one.Getting an account made all the difference in the world to my email experience.Suddenly I was freed from having to delete emails every few days to make space in my mailbox. And the app(application) was smooth and responsive, like a desktop client (客戶端程序)—and pretty fast in comparison to Hotmail." Conversation view" and using labels instead of folders took a little getting used to, but in all Gmail felt far more professional and made me much more productive.
Gmail is a favorite app of ours ever on WebWorkerDaily, and with good reason. It's still the best webmail client for web workers as it lets us access our email whenever and wherever we need to, on any device, with minimum effort. And Google hasn't spent the five years sitting on its Gmail success, either, but has introduced improvements to the service that include Gmail Tasks, chat, video chat and voice chat, combined with Google Calendar and Docs, Google Apps for Domains, and, of course, even more storage. We've recently covered the many features found in Gmail Labs: a way to "undo" seat messages, using canned responses for smart autoresponders, offline support using Gears and how to customize the way you.view your mailbox using multiple inboxes.
【小題1】The underlined sentence in the first paragraph implies that_____.

A.we shouldn't take Gmail for granted
B.you can try to write any kind of message
C.Gmail can correct your mistakes of itself
D.you needn't worry about the mailbox space
【小題2】Which of the following is not Gmail's striking feature?
A.Offline support.B.Using labels.

A.It is easier and more convenient to use folders.[來源:學_科_網]

Alone in the darkness under layers of rubble (碎石) , Dan Woolley felt blood streaming from his head and leg.
Woolley, an aid worker, husband, and father of two boys, followed instructions on his cell phone to survive the January 12 earthquake in Haiti.
“I had an app that had pre-downloaded all this information about treating wounds. So I  looked up excessive bleeding and I looked up compound fracture(斷裂),” Woolley told CNN.
The application on his iPhone is filled with information about first aid and CPR from the American Heart Association. “So I knew I wasn’t making mistakes, ” Woolley said. “That gave me confidence to treat my wounds properly.”
Trapped in the ruins of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince, he used his shirt to bandage his leg, and tied his belt around the wound. To stop the bleeding on his head, he firmly pressed a sock to it. Concerned he might have been experiencing shock, Woolley used the app to look up what to do. It warned him not to sleep. So he set his phone alarm to go off every 20 minutes.
Once the battery got down to less than 20 percent of its power, Woolley turned it off. By then, he says, he had trained his body not to sleep for long periods, drifting off only to wake up within minutes.
With his injuries tended to, he wrote a note to his family in his journal: “I was in a big accident, an earthquake. Don’t be upset at God. He always provides for his children even in hard times. I’m still praying that God will get me out, but he may not. But even so he will always take care of you.”
After more than 60 hours, Woolley was pulled from the rubble.
“Those guys are rescue heroes,” he said to the crew that pulled him out.
【小題1】 Which of the following best summarizes the passage?

A.How to deal with the wound.
B.Try to get in touch with outside.
C.How to stay awake under the ground.
D.An unforgettable experience in the earthquake.
【小題2】Woolley set his phone alarm to go off every 20 minutes because_____.
A.he tried his best to communicate with rescuers
B.he was forced to stay awake to check his wounds
C.he was afraid that sleep might do harm to him

【小題3】The underlined sentence suggests that_________.
A.he turned off his iPhone to save powerB.the battery of his IPhone lasted long

【小題4】 What Woolley wrote his journal showed _______.

Another day begins with the call of the phone’s alarm, Where are you? Open your eyes. Turn the alarm off and you will start working out on your apps(應用軟件).

First stop, weather: Sunny day. Look outside the window. Oh, no, it isn’t. Second stop, Air Quality Index: 344, dangerous, Level 6 Severely Polluted. Mental recheck required: It really is a sunny day and the weather app isn’t lying or in need of being replaced, it’s just that you can’t see the sun through the thick fog. Note to self: Cycling to work is out, face mask is in.

Has the world stopped turning? News app merely confirms that it’s business as usual. Another government has fallen, your soccer team has lost again, and China’s economy is still increasing steadily.

Diary app informs you of all the things you failed to do the previous day and loads you up with another half-dozen tasks. Next, browse a couple of social networking apps to determine the status updates of friends.

Another sound from the phone, it’s a message from your significant friend who is already at work, saying the Taobao. com order for Italian cheese is about to arrive.

Apps have become part of our “every-moment” lives. Apps provide so much information. But the dark side to all this connectivity would be lack of privacy, being a slave to the app. The only real problem is that once you lose your smartphone, you lose your life.

Some friends and family do not have smartphones, but prefer the old-fashioned Nokia that merely makes phone calls and sends instant messages. While I respect their purity and desire to be free of the control of technology, it’s obvious they are outsiders, and their lives are loaded up with paper and old devices. They’re still buying books at stores, complaining the lack of CDs on the market, watching TV and missing out on complete news cycles. Though I would add, they have lives that aren’t spent inside small screens.

My phone is a palm-sized one-stop shop and about the only thing it doesn’t do is teleport(心靈運輸). What’s not to like?

1.The functions of apps mentioned in the passage can be listed as follows EXCEPT that _______.

A. the apps can show you weather forecast

B. the apps can tell you how to work directly

C. the apps can inform you the latest news

D. the apps can tell you what you failed to do

2. According to the passage, the author thinks that _______.

A. people’s life is governed by apps

B. people feel bored about the use of apps

C. people can’t live without apps

D. people hate apps with powerful functions

3.It can be inferred from the last paragraph but one that _______.

A. more and more people like Nokia more than apps

B. using Nokia can be free of the control of technology

C. all people don’t like the advanced smartphones

D. ordinary people don’t like shopping online

Anger at the practice of demanding dowries, which can lead to violence against brides, has caused a takeoff of "Angry Birds" called "Angry Brides" that aims to highlight the illegal practice still common in many South Asian countries.

Dowries -- such as jewelry, clothes, cars and money -- are traditionally given by the bride's family to the groom and his parents to ensure she is taken care of in her new home.

The custom was outlawed more than five decades ago. But it is still widely practiced, with the groom's family demanding even more money after marriage, leading to mental and physical abuse that can drive the woman to suicide.

"The Angry Brides game is our way of throwing a spotlight on the nuisance (陋習) of dowry," said Ram Bhamidi, senior vice president and head of online marketing for Shaadi.com, a matrimonial (婚姻的) website with two million members.

"According to a 2007 study, there is a dowry-related death every four hours in India. We condemn this and have consistently run campaigns on social media to help create awareness of the issue."

The name of the app, available on the group's home page, is a spinoff from the globally popular "Angry Birds" game. Its home page shows a red-clad, eight-armed woman resembling a powerful female Hindu goddess. Underneath, there is a caption: "A woman will give you strength, care and all the love you need ... NOT dowry!"

To play the game, users have to try and hit three dodging grooms -- a pilot, builder and doctor. There is a wide array of weapons to choose from, including a stiletto shoe, a frying pan, broomstick, tomato and loafer.

Each groom has a price tag, starting at 1.5 million rupees ($29,165). Every time the player hits a groom, his value decreases and money is added to the player's Anti-Dowry Fund, which is saved posted on their Facebook page.

"Since we launched the game last week, more than 270,000 people have liked the app. Both men and women seem to be playing it," said Bhamidi.

D.More dowries the bride gives mean a high social status of her family.

3.The underlined word "spinoff” probably means_____________.

A.relation           B.connection        C.copy             D.fake

4.Which of the following is NOT TRUE about the game "Angry Brides"?

A.There are a variety of weapons to choose from.

B.Ram Bhamidi thinks highly of the game.

C.Men players don't find the game enjoyable.

D.The game character looks like a Hindu goddess.

5.What is the text mainly about?

A.Women's unfair treatment in the marriage.

B.The popularity of the game "Angry Brides".

C.The groom's demanding too many dowries.

D.How to build an equal relation in the marriage.
