(C)

Most American students said goodbye to expensive fruits these days. In school canteens across the country, cheaper fruits like apples and oranges heave replaced them. “People are afraid to spend now” said Linda Morrow, who owns a shoe and handbag store. “They basically don’t know what the future will bring and keep waiting till after the Presidential Election.”

The current financial crisis(金融危機), during which several of the country’s biggest banks have been forced to sell or close, has made lots of Americans unwilling to buy expensive goods.

Samira Martino, a restaurant owner in Miami, found everyone is ordering water instead of juice and more people are sharing meals. In more than two dozen interviews with the Associated Press across the country last month, American talked about their concerns, from worries about small businesses to doubts about simply making ends meet.

The crisis began last year. Experts blame it on U.S. banks lending money too easily. A lot of people and companies, who borrowed money, have found themselves unable to pay it back. This left the banks, as well as the people who put their money in the banks, without money. Since the banks borrowed money between themselves and even across borders, the whole world’s financial markets were involved.

This month the U.S. government agreed on a $ 700 billion plan to try to save the financial market. But a turn-around(轉機) is not sure. President George W. Bush has warned it will take some time for the full effects of the plan to take hold in an economy that has had a world of trouble.

Last week top finance officials from 20 major economies promised to work together to find a way out of the money trouble. They believe the current crisis is the worst since the Great Depression in 1929. And they all think international cooperation is the key to solve it.

Nick Campbell sat at the side of the road and wondered what to do next. He looked at the second-hand Harley Davidson he’d bought from a back-street garage back home in Miami at the beginning of his trip six weeks before.
For years he had dreams of crossing the United States from east to west by motorbike and he’d finally decided that it was now or never. He’d given up his job, sold his car and set off for the journey of his dreams. He’d been lucky, or so he thought, to find this old Harley Davidson and had bought it for a very reasonable price------it had cost him just $600. But five kilometers from Atlanta, he had run out of luck. The motorbike had broken down.
He pushed the bike into town and found a garage. The young mechanic told him to leave the bike overnight and come back the next day. The following morning, to his surprise, the man asked if the bike was for sale. “Certainly not,” he replied, paid his bill and hit the road.
When he got to Kansas the old machine ran out of steam again. This time Nick thought about selling it and buying something more reliable, but decided to carry on. When the bike was going well, he loved it.
However, in Denver, Colorado the bike broke down again so he decided to take it to a garage and offer it for sale. The mechanic told him to come back in the morning.
The next day, to his amazement, the man offered him $2,000. Realizing the man must be soft in the head, but clearly not short of money, Nick asked for $ 3,000. The man agreed and they signed the papers. Then the mechanic started laughing. In fact it was several minutes before he could speak and when he could he said, “That’s the worst deal you’ll ever make, boy."
He removed the seat. On the underside was the inscription (銘文):
'To Elvis, love James Dean. '

D
More and more teenage addicts in Korea are refusing to leave their bedrooms and some young adults are playing fantasy games online until they literally drop dead. "He didn't adapt very easily into high school," said Chu Dong-jiu, whose son, Jae--yun, 17, cruises football websites 12 to 14 hours a day. "That was why he dropped out. Now he spends all the time he is not eating on the computer. He hasn't been out of the house for eight months."
Eighty percent of South Koreans have broadband internet, the highest rate in the world. In Britain the figure is less than a third. This is partly the result of its intense, science-based schooling.  But according to Dr. Kim Hyun-soo, chairman of the Association of Internet Addiction Psychiatrists, an "education frenzy (狂怒)" has undermined children's self-confidence and forced them to seek escape elsewhere.
Children, many tutored beyond school, enjoy little free time outside home, driving them into the solitary solace(安慰) of the computer, he said. “What children do on the Internet reflects what they want in reality,” he said. “The dreams they pursue are the dreams they would pursue in ordinary life.”
The most common obsession(迷住,困擾) is with online games in which players become fantasy figures in landscapes pitted with foes and obstacles. One 28-year-old young man collapsed and died last year after playing a game non-stop for 50 hours in an Internet cafe. Doctors said he died from exhaustion and dehydration (脫水). Studies show five percent of "gamers” are seriously addicted, with a further 15 ~ 20 percent betraying signs of an unhealthy obsession. Gamers make up 90 percent of Dr. Kim's patients, often referred to him by mental hospitals to which parents had taken their children. The other l0 percent are guilty of freakish (異想天開的)and anti-social behaviour on websites. "These people are very frustrated inside and full of anger," he said.
The government has stepped in, banning children from Internet cafes after l0 p. m. , and sending teams of psychologists to visit them.
67. This passage mainly wants to tell us that________
A. Internet cafes seriously do great harm to children's life
B. lots of students in Korea escape into Internet fantasy
C. why more and more children in Korea like Internet cafes
D. the government should take immediate actions against Internet cafes
68. Why did Jae-yun drop out of the school?
A. Because his family was too poor.    B. Because he wanted to find a job earlier.
C. Because he liked searching football websites greatly.
D. Because he liked playing all kinds of computer games, especial]y football games.
69. According to the passage, we can infer that________.
A. most of Dr. Kim's patients are game lovers
B. garners make up l0 percent of Dr. Kim's patients
C. the government in Korea hasn't taken any action to control Internet cafes so far
D. more and more teenage addicts in Korea are refusing to leave their bedrooms
70. From what Dr. Kim said, we can conclude that_______.
A. children who like surfing the Internet are poor at studying
B. the Internet can help children to realize their dreams
C. most children who often go to Internet cafes hate society
D. the violence at school has something to do with the reasons why teenagers addict to the Internet

C
Last Sep.11 was an important day too. After unknown gunmen attacked aid workers from the Nobel Prize-winning Medecins sans Frontieres at a roadblock on that day , most of the international aid groups helping Darfur’s 6 million people stopped using the roads . On Dec.18 , unknown gunmen attacked the southern town of Gereida. More than 70 aid workers then pulled out of the refugee(難民) camp there—Darfur’s largest, with 130,000 people —leaving only 10 Red Cross employees behind. Yet at the time no one said what had really caused the sudden pullbacks.
Damaging has become surprisingly common in Darfur, where 200,000 Africans have been killed and a third of the population have been sent fleeing into camps in three years of war. But the attacks on international aid workers suggested a dramatic and dangerous start—to attack on purpose those helping to keep Darfur’s millions of refugee alive. A dozen people from foreign NGOs (non-governmental organizations) have been killed in just the past six months , more than previous years. There are about 14,000 aid workers in Darfur now , the majority of them Sudanese, working for foreign NGOs and U.N. agencies and delivering $1 billion a year in aid . Just a few more terrible attacks could throw that into jeopardy. Last week 14 U.N. offices working in Darfur made a clear warning that “the humanitarian (人道主義) organization cannot possibly make certain the survival of the population Darfur if aid workers don’t feel safe. ”
64.What made Sept.11 an important day according to the passage?
A.Two World Trade Center buildings were destroyed in the USA.
B.International aid workers were attacked in Darfur.
C.A fight happened between the international aid workers and some unknown gunmen in Darfur.
D.International aid groups stopped their help to Darfur.
65.Which of the following shows a picture of Darfur?
A.Darfur has been in war since the last Sept.11.
B.Many people in Datfur are homeless because of the war.
C.Darfur will not get help from organizations including the UN.
D.International aid groups have never been attacked before.
66.The underlined word“jeopardy”in the last paragraph most probably means
A.light                   B.practice              C.danger            D.effect
67.Which of the following can be the tide of the passage?
A.People in        Darfur        B.International Aid Groups in Danger
C.War in Darfur                D.International Aid to Darfur

This is a story  that happened 15 years ago but it has always stayed with me since then.On the way back from work every evening, more often than not there would be a homeless man standing at the exit of the freeway. He always waved at every car,he was always happy and smiling and sometimes almost dancing.Every day after work when I got there,I would quickly roll down my window and give him the coins.Occasionally the red light would be on for a minute and we would ask each other about our day.His answer would always be the same,“I’m blessed!”.

科目:高中英語 來源:2012屆福建省云霄一中高三第三次月考英語試卷 題型:閱讀理解

I’m a teacher. But there are days, like today, when I wonder why. The results of an English quiz taken by my fifth-graders were depressing. Despite my best efforts, the world of pronouns remains a mystery to them. How I wish there were a way to make the study of our language as exciting as a computer game, so the glazed (目光呆滯) looks would not appear in their eyes at the mention of the word “grammar.” I remember my husband’s words: “Why don’t you quit? You’d probably make more money by doing something else, and you wouldn’t have papers to grade every night.”
Tonight I have a stack of papers to grade, which I promised my students I would return tomorrow. But a friend, whom I haven’t seen in a year, is visiting from Belgium, and I told her I would keep this evening free.
Sitting in traffic behind a distant stoplight, it’s hard not to replay the day. A voice reports the body of a local youngster, missing for weeks, has been identified.
This missing child has had a deep effect on my students. They wondered, “If it happened to her, could it happen to me?”
My children had found the answer themselves. They got out their pencils, markers and made cards. Cards were written with words of compassion and love for a mother and father they didn’t know. Cards were filled with red hearts, golden crosses, flowers and angels. Their cards, intended to comfort others, comforted the children themselves by leading them past the anxiety, back into the world of security (安全) that should be theirs.
And then I remember why I’m still teaching. It’s the children. They’re more important than a lifetime filled with quiet evenings and more valuable than a pocket filled with money. My classroom, a child-filled world of discovery, of kindness and of caring is the real world.
It’s time to call my friend. I have promises to keep. She’ll understand. After all, she’s a teacher.
【小題1】The writer wonders why she is a teacher because _____.

A.her students often play games in class
B.teaching is not a well-paid job
C.her students feel bored with grammar
D.she feels frustrated at teaching
【小題2】 The students’ attitude to the missing child’s parents might be that of _____.
A.doubtB.unconcern C.sympathy D.tolerance
【小題3】What is the most important according to the writer?
A.A pocket filled with money.
B.The kind and caring children.
C.A lifetime filled with quiet evenings.
D.The freedom to control her own time.
【小題4】What promise will the writer keep?
A.To grade papers that night.B.To help a student with homework.
C.To accept her husband’s advice.D.To meet her old friend.
