Venice, one of the cities in Italy,was founded in A.D.811 by the people of Malamocco, fleeing （逃跑）from the Franks. It was said that they were guided by pigeons carrying little crosses, and settled where now Venice lies.
Venice is built on 117 islands. It has 150 canals and 400 bridges. The narrow streets, with their historic names, are covered with stones,but have no footpaths. They are dotted with flower shop signs and lanterns. Shops and palaces stand by side. The brick bridges are high enough to allow boats to pass freely under them.
The center of public life is St. Mark’s Square where tourists and citizens sit in the famous Florian and Quadri cafes to listen to music, enjoying themselves. The Quadri is more popular but the Florian, founded in 1720, is the best-known cafe because it has received such great persons as Byron (an English poet) and Goethe (a German poet).
Unfortunately the special position of Venice is threatening（威脅）it’s own existence. The terrain（地勢）on which it is built began to sink while the level of the surrounding waters is constantly rising. Howe’ver, many measures have already been taken to prevent the city from sinking.

Carnival(狂歡節) does not take place only in Louisiana. There are many celebrations around the world.
In Brazil, the celebration is supposed to go on from the Saturday before Mardi Gras (大齋節前的最后一天)to Mardi Gras Day, but in some Brazilian cities the celebration can last seven or eight days. In Oruru, Bolivia, their carnival is held in the last ten days of the carnival season. People there join in dancing, but their main carnival event is a ceremonial parade that lasts for twenty hours and parades for four kilometers. Over 20,000 dancers are involved as well as 10,000 musicians. This parade attracts at least 400,000 people.
The carnival in Venice, Italy is often regarded as the most carefully prepared carnival and lasts ten days before Lent (大齋節). Many events are held in the canals including shows, concerts, dances and water processions(隊列). The official ending to the celebration is the party held in St. Mark's Square.

Tuvalu, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will be flooded by the sea water.

While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands, Tuvalu’s rising sea level is caused by global warming.
The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degree over the past century, scientists expect it to rise by an extra 1-3 degrees over the next 100 years.
Warmer weather makes glaciers(冰川) melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures also make water expand, so it takes more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about 10-25cm in the last 100 years.
The main cause of global warming is human pollution. Through burning coal and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer.
Many scientists believe that, if the warming is not stopped, there would be huge climate changes. The sea level could rise by one meter this century.
Should this come true, millions of homes would be flooded by the sea water and the world would be flooded with climate refugees(難民) looking for somewhere to live.
