America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect (影響) American society in many ways — education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society— one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior(行為)is suitable (合適)at various ages. A person's age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There's no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school ,get a job, or stop working isn't as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the firs time. Public ideas are changing. Many people say, 'I am much younger than my mother - or my father - was at my age.' No one says ‘Act your age’ anymore. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

1.It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America_________  .

A.has made people feel younger

B.has changed people's social position

C. has changed people's understanding of age

D. has slowed down the country's social development

2.The underlined word ‘one’ refers to_________.

A. a society        B. America                C. a place                 D. population

3.‘Act your age’ means people should_________.

A.be active when they are old

B.do the right thing at the right age

C. show respect for their parents young or old

D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age

4.If a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text would most probably consider it ______.

A.normal            B.wonderful              C.unbelievable                   D.unreasonable

【答案】

1.C

2.A

3.B

4.A

【解析】

 試題分析:講述美國社會老齡化問題以及這一變化對人們的舉動,思維等各方面都發生了極大的影響。

1.從第三行 the graying of America ....people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior(行為)is suitable (合適)at various ages,說明了人口老齡化給整個社會,特別是給人們對年齡問題的理解帶來的變化。

2.one用以代替上文中所提到過的一個名詞a (different)society,是泛指的用法,并不特指美國社會。而且one后面跟了一個定語從句,可以通過剖析句子結構得出正確答案。

3.根據第四行所提到的people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.“Act your age”就是指人們在適當的年齡做合適的事情。

4.此題要求考生判斷作者態度。第二段的最后兩句話和最后一段的最后一句都反映了作者的態度,“It doesn’t surprise us to hear of…”和“We’ve stopped looking with surprise at…”。由于人們對年齡問題的觀點的變化,25歲的年輕人成為一家大公司的總經理已不再令人驚訝。

Who are these people rushing by you in the street? More than 215 million people now call America “home’’, but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost the customs and cultures of their original countries and have become “American’’is really not true. In fact, what exists in America is more often a kind of “side-by-side”, living in which groups of people from other countries often have kept many of their customs and habits. They join the general American society only in certain areas of their lives—such as in schools, business, and sports-but they keep many of their own native customs and manners socially and at home. This living “side-by-side” has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are very different from one another. However, there are also great advantages that come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There is great freedom of choice among ideas and dress, food, and social customs in America. Everyone can find some part of his or her familiar world in the United States, in Churches, music, food, national groups, or newspapers.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015屆河南許昌六校高一第六次聯考英語卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us develop more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they treat  us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the custom in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

1.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.

B.Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives

C.Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.

D.Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.

2.From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.

A.warmly welcomed at the airport            B.offered a ride to his home

C.treated hospitably at his home              D.treated to dinner in a restaurant

3.The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ______.

A.willing to spend time                     B.serious with time

C.careful with time                        D.strict with time

4.A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”.

A.Friendships between Chinese              B.Friendships between Americans

C.Americans’ hospitality                  D.Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendships

請認真閱讀下列短文, 并根據所讀內容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰當的單詞。注意:每空格1個單詞。

The job of raising children is a tough one. Children don't come with an instruction handbook. And each child is different. So parents sometimes pull their hair out in frustration, not knowing what to do. But in raising children---as in all of life---what we do is influenced by our culture. Naturally then, American parents teach their children basic American values.

To Americans, the goal of parents is to help children stand on their own two feet. From infancy, each child may get his or her own room. As children grow, they gain more freedom to make their own choices. Teenagers choose their own forms of entertainment, as well as the friends to share them with. When they reach young adulthood, they choose their own careers and marriage partners. Of course, many young adults still seek their parents' advice and approval for the choices they make. But once they "leave the nest" at around 18 to 21 years old, they want to be on their own, not "tied to their mother's apron strings."

The relationship between parents and children in America is very informal. American parents try to treat their children as individuals ─ not as extensions of themselves. They allow them to fulfill their own dreams. Americans praise and encourage their children to give them the confidence to succeed. When children become adults, their relationship with their parents becomes more like a friendship among equals. But contrary to popular belief, most adult Americans don't make their parents pay for room and board when they come to visit. Even as adults, they respect and honor their parents.

Most young couples with children struggle with the issue of childcare. Mothers have traditionally stayed home with their children. In recent years, though, a growing trend is to put preschoolers in a day care center so Mom can work. Many Americans have strong feelings about which type of arrangement is best. Some argue that attending a day care center can be a positive experience for children. Others insist that mothers are the best caregivers for children. A number of women are now leaving the workforce to become full-time homemakers.

Disciplining children is another area that American parents have different opinions about. Many parents feel that an old-fashioned spanking(一頓打) helps youngsters learn what "No!" means. Others prefer alternate forms of discipline. For example, "time outs" have become popular in recent years. Children in "time out" have to sit in a corner or by a wall. They can get up only when they are ready to act nicely. Older children and teenagers who break the rules may be grounded, or not allowed to go out with friends. Some of their privileges at home like TV or telephone use may also be taken away for a while. Although discipline isn't fun for parents or children, it's a necessary part of training.

Being a parent is a tall order. It takes patience, love, wisdom, courage and a good sense of humor to raise children. Some people are just deciding not to have children at all, since they're not sure it's worth it. But raising children means training the next generation and preserving our culture. What could be worth more than that?
