The British are the most voracious(如饑似渴的) newspaper readers in the world.
They read newspapers at breakfast ; they walk to the bus reading a newspaper; they read a newspaper on bus, as they go to work; and on the way back home, after work, they are engaged in reading an evening newspaper.
There are many" morning papers", both national and provincial. The most famous is The Times. Different from what many foreigners believe, this is not a government newspaper. The various newspapers usually have their own views of the Communist Morning Star. The Labor Party and the Trades Union Congress no longer have a daily newspaper to represent them.
Bold headlines and a variety of photographs are features of the British press. Some newspapers, such as the sober Daily Telegraph and The Times, use photographs sparingly(節省). The more“popular”newspapers, using the small or "tabloid"(小報) format, such as the Daily Express, the Mail, the Daily Mirror and the Sun, use pictures extensively and also run strip cartoons and humorous drawings, some of which present striking pictorial comment on politics.
Besides offering features common to newspapers all over the world, British newspapers specialize in pages devoted to criticism of the arts and a woman's page. One feature found in many foreign newspapers is missing in British papers:the serial(連載).
Nearly all papers pay special attention to the reporting of sports and athletics. The evening newspapers are often bought because the buyer wants to know the winner of a race, or to get good tip for a race that is still to be run. There is no censorship(審查) of the press in Britain (except in wartime), though of course all newspapers—like private persons—are responsible for what they publish, and can be sued for libel (為誹謗而被起訴) for publishing articles that go beyond the bounds of decency(正派), or for ignorance of court”. (e.g. calling a man a murderer while he is still being tried.Such cases are not often)
1.Which of the following does NOT serve as an evidence(證據) that the British are the great newspaper readers?
A.They read newspapers at breakfast.       B.They read newspapers at work.
C.They read newspapers on bus.           D.They read newspapers on the way back home.
2.Many of foreigners think that_______.
A.The Times is an organ (喉舌) of the government
B.The Times has its own views on politics
C.The Times is the most famous newspaper in the world
D.The Times pays too much attention to the reporting of political events
3.British newspapers are characterized by ________.
A.bold headlines                       B.various kinds of photographs
C.striking pictorial comment on politics      D.both A and B
4.Which of the following conclusions can NOT be drawn from the passage?
A.Englishmen always take every possible chance to read newspapers.
B.In Britain, newspapers must be carefully examined by the authorities(當局) before their publication for fear that they present anything offensive.
C.Few British newspapers publish libelous articles.
D.The Times is one of the world-famous newspapers.

Everyone makes mistakes in life, but for whales and dolphins, the “mistake” of landing on the shore costs the highest price---their lives.
People living along the coast of Australia and New Zealand have been shocked and saddened by the number of whales and dolphins that they have found on their beaches recently. Since November 28th, 96 whales and dolphins have died in Australia and 53 whales died in New Zealand. Although 20 whales were saved, some of these were not expected to live, as they were too weak to swim with the others back to sea.
Bob Brown, leader of Australia’s Green party, said the mass beaching was caused by the recent “sound bombing” of the ocean floor between the two countries. This is a method of testing for oil and gas reserves (儲藏量).
But mass beaching of whales has long puzzled scientists. Typically most members of the stranded (擱淺) group will appear to be perfectly healthy. “Some researchers believe that close relationship within the group causes the problem, if one gets into trouble, the others will not leave” said Shery Gibney, a leading biologist in New Zealand. “Some will come in and try and assist it; if they get trapped on the beach, then more will come.”
Another common theory is that the whales’ navigation (導航) system are thought to break down in some way. It has been said that whales follow electromagnetic (電磁的) patterns in the sea-bed. The whales can get confused because these patterns sometimes change. That would be a bit like a new roundabout (環狀交叉路) being built on a road you were used to driving on. You might be confused for a minute when you come to it for the first time, and you might even take a wrong turning before getting back on your route.
A different idea is that when whales chase fish for food they end up in shallow waters because they are not paying attention to where they are going.
And yet, from time to time a group will swim on purpose into shallow waters and end up on the beach, where they die. If returned to the sea, some whales often show great determination in restraining themselves.
小題1:________ whales and dolphins would probably die in this mass beaching along the coast of Australia and New Zealand.
A.Less than 100B.Less than 150C.More than 150D.149
小題2:Which of the following can be used to explain the term “sound bombing”?
A.The terrible sound that is caused in the war between two countries.
B.Human activities that aim to explore the ocean floor.
C.The loud sound that whales and dolphins make.
D.The earthquakes that happen on the ocean floor.
小題3:Which of the following couldn’t probably lead to the mass beaching of whales?
A.A change in the electromagnetic patterns that whales follow.
B.New roundabout being built on a road.
C.Their full attention to the search for food.
D.Exploiting natural resources in oceans.
小題4:The passage is mainly about _______.
A.that whales and dolphins may make mistakes as well as human beings
B.how scientists have found the reasons for the mass beaching of whales
C.how human beings make use of the ocean resources
D.why the mass beaching of whales happens

There is a boy in my gym class (I’ll call him Bill) who has unbearably yellow teeth that almost make everyone feel unpleasant. Recently another boy told Bill that he should “go Ajax” his teeth. Bill was crushed. Had the other boy been thinking, he would have realized that there is a better way to handle such a situation. He could have dealt with it with tact. He could have showed this hurtful truth in a more careful, sensitive way—that’s “tact”.
If a person isn’t sensitive to another’s feelings, there is no way he or she can be tactful. Yesterday, my 5-year-old brother proudly announced that he had cleaned the screen on our television set. Unfortunately, he used furniture polish(亮光油), which produced an oily film on the television screen. My mother smiled and thanked him for his efforts—and then showed how to clean the screen properly. Her sensitivity enables my brother to keep his self-respect. Yet, sensitivity alone does not make tact.
“Tactfulness” also requires “truthfulness”. Doctors, for example must be truthful. If a patient has just been disabled in an accident, a tactful doctor will tell the truth—but express it with sensitivity. The doctor may try to give the patient hope by telling them curing techniques under study or about advanced equipment now available. Doctors must use tact with patients relatives as well. Instead of bluntly saying, “Your husband is disabled,” a doctor might say, “I’m sorry, but your husband has lost feeling in his legs and…”
Tact should not be confused with trickery. Trickery occurs when a nurse is about to give a patient an injection and says, “This won’t hurt a bit.” Instead of trickery, the nurse might guarantee the patient that the discomfort of the injection is a small thing compared to the benefits of it. It would also be thoughtful for the nurse to tell the patients about some of these benefits.
Tact is a wonderful skill to have, and tactful people are usually admired and respected. Without tact our society would become an intolerable place to live in.
小題1:When told he should “go Ajax” his teeth, Bill probably felt ________________.
A.surprisedB.cheated
C.regretfulD.painful
小題2:According to the author, his mother’s praise for the brother is _______________.
A.both sensitive and tactfulB.sensitive but not tactful enough
C.truthful but not tactfulD.sensitive but trickish
小題3:The fourth paragraph mainly talks about __________________.
A.how to comfort the patients
B.how to use trickery carefully
C.differences between trickery and promises
D.another feature of tact
小題4:Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? (The numbers stand for the paragraphs)

Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self- respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized(歸類) as "honor" help you create this life of good feelings.
Here's an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.
Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and benefit from the clerk's mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky(鬼祟的) excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.
Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?
In the first case, where we don't tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also show that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk's attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased.Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.
There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it's easy to think and act honorably again when we're happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it's started, it's easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.
79.The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to___.
A.lying
B.stealing
C.cheating
D.advertising
80.The phrase "bringing the error to the clerk's attention" (in para. 5) means___.
A.telling the truth to the clerk
B.offering advice to the clerk
C.asking the clerk to be more attentive
D.reminding the clerk of the charged item
81.How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?
A.We'll be very excited.
B.We'll feel unfortunate.
C.We'll have a sense of honor.
D.We'll feel sorry for the clerk.
82 .Which of the following can be the best title of this passage.
A.How to Live Truthfully
B.Importance of Peacefulness
C.Ways of Gaining Self-respect
D.Happiness through Honorable Actions

Do you have any of these bad habits ? Check yourself by answering  “yes”or“no” to these questions.
a)      Do you move your lips when reading silently ?
b)     Do you point to words with your fingers as you read ?
c)      Do you move your head from side to side as you read ?
d)     Do you read one word at a time ?
If your answer “yes”  to any of these questions , start at once to break the habits. If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then when your lips move, you will know it and stop them. If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you won’t have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head, place your chin in one hand, and hold your head still.
If you read no more than one word at a time, you need to work in learning to take in more words at each glance as your eyes travel across the lines of words. Even if you read fairly fast now, you can learn to even faster. As you probably have been told, the secret of fast reading is to take in whole groups of words at each glance. Read in several groups and force your eyes along the lines of words as fast as you can make them go. Anyone who practices doing these two things will be able to read faster.
56. What do you think of those habits talked about in the text _________.
A. we should remember those habits
B. they should be got rid of
C. they are difficult to get rid of
D. they are good for our studies
57. You may hold your finger over your lips while reading so as to __________.
A. hold a piece of paper between your lips
B. keep yourself from talking to others
C. tell others to be silent
D. feel whether your lips move or not
58. When your eyes travel across the lines of words, you need to __________.
A. read the words out
B. look at every word carefully
C. read several words at a time
D. remember every word
59. If you can read fairly fast now, __________.
A. you don’t need to learn to read faster
B. you can go on reading like that
C. you can learn to read even faster
D. you can enjoy reading
