Many people think a telephone is essential .But I think it is a pest and a time waster .Very often you find it impossible to escape from some idle or curious chatter―box ,or from somebody who wants something for nothing .If you have a telephone in your own house ,you will admit that it tends to ring when you are asleep ,or in the middle of a meal or a conversation, or when you are just going out ,or when you are taking your bath. The newly invented digital camera is fascinating; you can take pictures without film. You can transfer and exhibit your picture globally in a few seconds through the Internet .The image stored in a hard drive will never wear out like the traditional photos .Digital cameras also satisfy the impatient photographer by allowing them to view their masterpiece in real time.
Unlike the images of traditional cameras formed by chemical reaction ,the digital camera works as an image digitizer itself .It’s made of CCD(charge ?coupled device ), a small grid of tiny light ?sensitive cells .When struck by light ,each cell sends out an electrical signal whose waveform characteristics vary depending on the intensity （強度）of light .The signal from each cell is changed into a digital value and stored in the camera’s memory or on an electronic storage medium. People say teenagers are no good. They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive recklessly up and down America’s main streets; they carry chips on their shoulders as big as the Sears Tower. And at least some of the time those things are true. But we shouldn’t forget that there are hard moments in the life of a teenager too.
I watched such a moment not long ago at a woman’s funeral(葬禮). I didn’t expect the event to affect me. Through much of the ceremony, in fact, I remained unmoved.
Then her teenage grandson stepped forward. With his very first deep breath, every heart in that church was achingly reminded of something we had all forgotten. Softly he began: “I want to share a few values that Nana taught me. She never failed to see light in any situation. When our family dog would literally attact her, what would Nana say? ‘Oh, what beautiful markings that dog has.’ That was Nana.
“She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa, who was a successful businessman in this city. But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for Grandpa’s career,” he said, with a voice now trembling. “That was Nana’s way.”
Through a muffled sob, he continued. “Whenever she did anything worth recognition, you’d have to hear about it from a different source, because she was never one to brag.”
Finally, in a voice breaking free of sorrow, he looked up and said, “Nana taught me courage. She put up an incredible fight to the end, when she died peacefully, which is how she lived her life. That was Nana’s way, and I hope I can carry on in the same manner.”
There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers, because everything is happening to them for the first time. The trouble with teenagers is that they haven’t learned to be controlled.
When that boy rose to speak about the woman who surely had been his truest ally and dearest friend, his honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide in the calm ritual. He exposed us to the truth about this very real woman who believed in a boy who probably tried the patience of many adults. He reminded us that his grandmother was more than another dot on the chart of life and death.
All over again we felt those powerful losses crisscrossing our own hearts, and we knew that when you say good-bye to a beloved grandparent, you say good-bye to something happy, something young in yourself. And that something never really returns, and the pain never really goes away.

While the number of the cars makes up only 2% of the total of the world, the rate of the deaths is 22%, making China a country with the highest death rate of traffic accidents in the world.
The main reason why so many traffic accidents have happened is that the roads are too crowded and people ignore traffic rules. In order to reduce the traffic accidents, first, the government should take some proper measures, such as developing public traffics. Second, people should obey traffic rules, especially the drivers.

W：Computing. I see. Um, apart from the language difficulties, how have you found the course?
M：Well, the main difficulty for me is getting time on the computers in the computer room. It’s always busy and this makes it very hard to do my practical work.
W：Can you reserve time in the computer room?
M：No, … but it would certainly help if we could reserve computer time.
W：Yes, I’ll look into that and see if something can be done to improve things over there.

W：Okay, Mr. Taylor, let’s go ahead and begin. First of all, tell me about your last job.
M：Well, as stated on my resume, I worked for five years at Hi Tech Computers.
W：Okay. Hi Tech. And what do you know about computer networks and operating systems including DOS, Windows, Macintosh OS, and UNLX?
M：Umm … well … I did come in contact with computers every night at my last job.
W：Hum! … And how about web site authoring skills? [Oh]. We are looking for someone to create and manage our company’s web site which would include the development, configuration, and use of CGI scripts.
M：Umm … uh, web page, web page. Huh … I don’t think I’ve read that book, and I’m afraid I’ve never used those CGI things.
W：Huh?! And what about experience with Java or JavaScript?
M：Well … I think I’ve tried Java at a foreign coffee shop one time, if that’s what you mean.
W：Okay, Mr. Taylor, I think I have all the information I need!
M：Oh, and I really like computer games. I play them every day.
W：Right, right. Thanks Mr. Taylor. We’ll be in touch.

If you are studying English, the Language Study Fair that’s being held this month will certainly interest you. The show is taking place between the 17th and 19th of March at the National Education Centre. It aims to answer all your questions about self ? study, whatever your level.
The Language Study Fair provides a perfect opportunity for you to see, compare and get advice on everything that helps you improve the way you study. Over 350 leading producers of educational materials will be present.
We’ve got lots of different things for you to see sand hear. There will be stands showing different types of self ? study textbooks, and talks by educational speakers on the best ways to study by yourself. You’ll be able to see the latest furniture available for people who study at home. We’re sure you’ll also enjoy watching people using the latest computer programs, which can make studying English much easier. This is your chance to make good decisions about what you buy. You can attend the fair between nine thirty and five on Thursday and Friday, and from nine ? thirty and five on Thursday and Friday ,and from nine-thirty to four on Saturday.
Tickets cost ￡5 each, or ￡3 if you are a full ? time student. All tickets can be booked by ringing the ticket hotline. The number is 984 ? 7711. Parking can be really difficult around the National Education Centre. However, an all ? day space can be booked for only ￡2.50 per vehicle. So, we look forward to seeing you there!
