A 9.0-magnitude earthquake occurred
off the northeastern coast of Japan on 11 March
The earthquake in Japan on March 11,2011 was a 9.0 on the Richter scale (里氏). Over 6,500 died because of the disaster by March 18. The earthquake also caused a tsunami (海嘯) and a nuclear leak (核泄漏).
However, most Japanese people stayed calm and orderly.They left broken houses calmly. They waited in line for food, water and public telephones. There was no robbing (搶劫) and no pushing.
Earthquakes hit Japan almost every year. People are ready for an earthquake at any time.
In Japan, you can learn about earthquakes on TV and in schoolbooks. Even the famous comic, Sakura Momoko (《櫻桃小丸子》), shows earthquake training in a school. Almost every family in Japan has a survival kit (救生包). The kit has a flashlight (手電筒), a radio, water and enough food for several days.
Most buildings in Japan use wood. The material is less dangerous during a disaster. The buildings can stand an earthquake of up to 7.0 on the Richter scale.

If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help ---and pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before he or she left. You can introduce him or her to your new friends!

On December 23, 2008, Niu Niu held a piano concert at the national Grand Theater (國家大劇院). As an eleven-year-old boy, he became the youngest pianist ever to perform a concert at the theater.
Never too young to learn

He continued to allow Niu Niu to watch his teaching of other students and gave him more sheet music to play.
Playing for fun
Zhang started teaching Niu Niu standard piano lessons when he was four. Unlike many other piano teachers, Zhang didn’t insist that Niu Niu play strictly with the correct finger positioning (位置). He said that the strict finger positioning would rob some kids of fun of playing. So Niu Niu could play in his own way. He could play the tone successfully. But Niu Niu was required to play the music without looking at the sheet music. Now he can remember about 80 pages.
Rising to fame
In 2003, at the age of 6, Niu Niu successfully held a sole concert in his hometown Xiamen. At the age of 8, he gave a performance at the International Piano Festival in France. At the age of 10, Niu Niu played in London and his performance was praised by Prince Charles. Last year, this young pianist published his first album “Niu Niu Plays Mozart” and over 10,000 copies have been sold in the world.
