There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved*.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not enjoy the long train journey and had brought along many magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sat down and started to read magazines.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just a city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond* the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive, I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. When my uncle arrived, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug. I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.

Like many lovers of books, Mary and her husband, Richard Goldman, seldom walked past a bookstore without stopping to look inside. They often talked of opening their own store one day.
When Mary was in hospital with heart trouble in 1989, they decided it was time to get serious. Richard, who worked for a business company, wanted to work for himself, and Mary needed to slow down from her  job.
They started by talking to bookstore owners and researching(調查) the industry. “We knew it had to be a specialty store because we couldn’t match the big chains dollar for dollar,” says Mary. One figure caught her attention: She’d read somewhere that roughly 20 percent of books sold were mysteries(推理小說), and many buyers spent more than $300 a year on books. She and Richard were themselves mystery readers.
On Halloween 1992, they opened the Mystery Lovers Bookshop and Café near their home. With three children in college, the couple could not spend all the family’s money to start a shop. To cover the whole  $ 100, 000 cost, they drew some of their savings, borrowed from relatives and from a bank.
The store broke even in its first year, with only $ 120,000 in sales. But Mary was always coming up with new ways to attract customers. The shop had a coffee bar and it offered gifts to mystery lovers and served dinners for book clubs that met in the store. She also invited dozens of writers to discuss their stories.
Today Mystery Lovers makes sales of about $ 420,000 a year. After paying taxes, business costs and the six part-time sales clerks, Richard and Mary together earn about $ 34,000.
“The job you love may not go hand in hand with a million-dollar income,” says Richard. “This has always been about an enjoyable life for ourselves, not about making a lot of money.”
小題1: After Mary got well from her illness they began _________.
A.to study industrial management (工業管理)
B.to buy and read more mystery books
C.to do market research on book business
D.to work harder to save money for the bookstore
小題2: How did their bookstore do in the first year?
A.They had to borrow money to keep it going.
B.They made just enough to cover all the costs.
C.They succeeded in earning a lot of money.
D.They failed though they worked hard.
小題3:According to Richard, the main purpose(目的) of running the bookstore is _________.
A.to pay for children’s education
B.to get to know more writers
C.to set up more bookstores
D.to do what they like to do

A recent survey of 2000 parents in Britain showed that they are often afraid of science questions asked by their curious children only because they have no idea what the answer is. Here is a list of some simple questions that you can ask your parents to see if they know the answers.
Q: Why is the sky blue?
A: You probably know white sunlight is made up of seven colors. While it moves in a straight line when going through space, it starts to divide as it hits “raised area” in the atmosphere. The ones with longest wavelengths pass through easily. The blue , however , can be taken in by the gas molecules (分子) because it has a shorter wavelength , which in turn scatters (使分散) it in different directions. That’s why when you look up at the sky, it appears to be blue.
Q:Why does the moon sometimes appear during the daytime?
A: The simple answer to that is because just like any other object it is being lit by the sun. As long as it is around 45 degrees or even 90 degrees off the sun, it will receive light and be able to be seen. The only time it is not able to be seen during its 28-day orbit (軌道) around the earth is when it is right between the earth and the sun. That’s because its back , which is not lit by the sun, is facing us.
Q: Where do birds/ honeybees go in winter?
A: While the bird part is quite easy, since a lot of them get together and travel, the honeybee part is likely to puzzle your parents. It turns out that these busy insects stop being that active when the temperature drops below 50°F. Instead ,they get together in the lower central area of the hive (蜂巢)and form a ball around their queen. This helps keep both warm enough to survive the cold winter months.
小題1:The sky looks blue mainly because the color blue in the sunlight_______.
A.has the longest wavelength among all the colors
B.cannot be taken in by the gas molecules
C.doesn’t hit “raised area” in the atmosphere
D.cannot pass through space successfully
小題2:How long can’t the moon be seen during the daytime in a month?
A.2 B.28 C.30 D.31
小題3:What do honeybees choose to do when the temperature drops below 50°F?
A.They choose to be active in the wild.
B.They choose to keep themselves warm.
C.They choose to travel to a warm place.
D.They choose to get together in the upper central area of the hive.
小題4:What is NOT explained in the passage?
A.Why is the sky blue?
B.Why is the moon able to be seen during the daytime?
C.Why do birds travel in winter?
D.Where do honeybees go in winter?

It’s Friday evening. My daughters, 3 and 9, sigh(嘆息) when I gently take the iPads away from their laps. One by one, our screens are turned off. We light the candles and sit down to have a big meal.
Most people in our lives know they will not be able to contact us by using computer or moblie  phones for 24 hours. And so it has gone, every week for three years. We call it our “Technology Shabbat(科技安息日)" which lasts from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday.
I first understood the importance of disconnecting in 2008, when my father was told that he
had got brain cancer. Some days he would have ony one good hour, and I wasn’t willing to be disturbed when I was with him, so I’d turn off my mobile phone.
Soon after, encouraged by National Day of Unplugging(全國斷網斷電日) on March 1st, my husband and I decided to unplug for one full day every week.
During our “Technology Shabbats”, time slows. Our Saturdays now feel like mini-vacations. We drive our car or ride our bike. We, with our kids, work in the garden, play board games and cook meals. I feel more balanced. I feel like a better mother, wife and person.
Keeping a balance between the good and the bad of technology is my lasting state. The technology we’ve created makes it possible for us to share knowledge and take in carious ideas all over the world. But the technology also take something away from us. When we stay up late at night linking(連接) from website to website or sending messages or e-mailing, we click again, and again, and again until we’ve overloaded(超負荷的).
When we rush into the time full of high technology, it's necessary for us to pay attention to what we are doing online and when we should go off.
I will always remember the most important thing in my family: “Technology Shabbat".
小題1: When is “Techtwhgy Shabbat' in the writer's family?
A.Only on Sunday.
B.From sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday.
C.Only on Friday.
D.From sunset on Saturday to sunset on Sunday.
小題2: The writer's family have “Technology Shabbat" every week mainly becausc they hope to ______.
A.save energy
B.enjoy life together
C.stay away from others
D.follow National Day of Unplugging
小題3: What do the writers family NOT do during their “Technology Shubbats”?
A.They drive their car or ride bikes for mini-vacations.
B.They light the candles and sit down to have a big meal.
C.They work in the garden, play board games and cook meals.
D.They stay up late at night linking from website to website.
