Once there was an unknown young painter who made a living by painting portraits (pictures of persons) . One day,a rich man came by and asked him to draw a portrait for him. They agreed on the pay of 10,000 dollars.

Soon the portrait was finished. But the rich man hit on a bad idea, "The man in the painting is me. If I don't buy this painting,no one else will. Why should I pay so much money for it?”So he said, "I will only pay 3 ,000 dollars."

The young artist was shocked and strongly argued about the fairness. But the rich man just didn't listen to him, "I ask you one last time, will you sell it for 3 ,000 dollars or not?"

The young artist knew the rich man went back on his word on purpose,so he said calmly, "No,I'd prefer not to sell the painting rather than being humiliated by you. But if you break your promise today, you'll pay 20 times of it later. Let's wait and see."

Before long the painter moved out of this sad place, visiting many famous teachers to study hard on painting night and day.

More than a dozen ( means 12) years passed. The rich man had already forgotten the artist's painting and words until one day, some of his friends came to tell him, "It is so strange! We paid a visit to a famous artist's exhibition of paintings, and found that the man on one of the paintings which is marked 200,000 dollars looks exactly the same as you. It is so ridiculous that the title of the painting is Thief."

It was a headon blow to him. He immediately thought up the young painter years ago. If the painting was really the one on which he broke his promise that year,it would be terrible. He went to the exhibition right away. As he feared, the painting named Thief was no other than that one on which he had broken his words that year. He quickly apologized to the artist and paid 200,000 dollars to buy back the portrait.

The young painter finally brought the rich man to his knees. Nobody can really humiliate or beat you as long as you put all your heart in what you are interested in. And this young man's name was Pablo Picasso.

In Britain you are allowed to drive a car when you are seventeen. You have to get a special twoyear driving license before you can start. When you are learning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with you because you aren't allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don't have to go to a driving school―a friend can teach you. The person with you isn't allowed to take the money for the lesson unless he's got a teacher's license.

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horses. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly (肚子) or the foot of the horse,if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people's rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar (奇特的) to himself;and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way. Now the very same thing is true to literature (文學) .And the question, " How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is,you are not yet experienced (有經驗的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail―that is to say,you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.

My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and announced, u Get up,you're going with me to cut grass."

The idea that my father actually thought I was old enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunrise,my father,my younger brother and I worked in the large yards,in a rich part of Atlanta,Georgia. By the end of the day I was tired out,but I felt well. I had put in a day's hard work and had earned $6.
